Size, Phases,
and distance!
Moon Size
The moon is 3,475 kilometers or 2,160 miles in
diameter.
Moon Phases
There are eight moon phases. They are New Moon,
New Crescent, First Quarter, New Gibbous, Full
Moon, Old Gibbous, Last Quarter, and Old Crescent.
It takes about 24 days for the phases to
be fully complete, and for them to restart.
Moon Distance
The average distance between the moon and earth is
384403 kilometers (238857 miles).
Ethan Cooper, Devin Edgin. Period 3.
How it was formed
Scientists believe that the
moon was created when
another planetoid crashed into
earth, and the debris collected
and became the moon.
What is the moon made of?
Like the Earth, the Moon has layers. The innermost layer is
the lunar core. It only accounts for about 20% of the
diameter of the Moon. Scientists think that
the lunar core is made of metallic iron, with
small amounts of sulfur and nickel.
Astronomers know that the core of the
Moon is probably at least partly molten. The
top layer is called the crust. The crust of
the Moon is composed mostly of oxygen,
silicon, magnesium, iron, calcium, and
aluminum. There are also trace elements
like titanium, uranium, thorium, potassium
and hydrogen.

Orbit, and
effect on earth
Orbit
The Moon makes a complete orbit around the Earth with
respect to the fixed stars about every 27.3 days. However,
since the Earth is moving in its orbit about the Sun at the
same time, it takes slightly longer for the Moon to show the
same phase to Earth, which is about 29.5 days.
Effect
The moon affects the earth in two ways. Its
position around the earth allows it to reflect the sun's light
into our night. The moon's orbit around the earth lasts about
a month giving us different levels of this light. The 'new
moon' has little light to offer and the 'full moon' provides us
with the best lighting. The second effect comes from the
moon's gravitational pull on the earth. As the earth rotates,
the moon's pull causes the world's bodies of water to
experience 'high tides.' At a given time there are two high
tides on earth.
