PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Sara Davey Academy Principal

This week at Mounts Bay we have had a distinctly community feel to the Academy as we have welcomed many visitors and held a number of events on behalf of the community.

It’s all about you...

Here, there and everywhere...

The week started with us playing host to the CRY Screening Service. Cardiac Screening in the Young ran the free screening sessions for anyone in the community between the age of 14 and 35.

The CRY Screening Team

Many of you have been following the progress of Iris as she has progressed on her round Britain, via the Caledonia Canal, sailing adventure since she set off five weeks ago aboard the Helen Mary R.

We are listening

Many of you expressed a wish to improve the environment both here and in the local area during our recent Crew Meeting. The most popular suggestion from the discussions was the creation of a community group that would do a litter pick around the village of Heamoor once a week. As soon as we have arranged for the safety equipment to be delivered we will be starting this service, if you would like to be involved please contact Mr Eddy.

...and Finally

The screening involved participants having an Electrocardiogram (ECG), which looks at the electrical conduction pathways around the heart. A printout of the heart’s electrical activity was obtained for evaluation by the cardiologist and we are pleased to say that the event was fully booked.

ECG Testing

Be Involved

The vessel returned to Plymouth this morning and I look forward to seeing Iris back in school next week to congratulate her on her outstanding achievement.

Well Done

BE YOURBEST

Da Vinci Award

Erin Williams has produced some work on Pythagorean Triples and has taken the time to develop her understanding of this topic. She has produced some great algebra on proving the number of Pythagorean Triples that exist and investigated Primitive Pythagorean Triples.

Dolcie Penzer-Hughes took us back in time to look at the work of Florence Nightingale who is best known for her work as a nurse but she has had a big impact on the maths we study today. Dolcie explored how Nightingale's use of the polar area diagram during the Crimean war allowed them to categorise fatalities and linked that in to the pie charts we now use today.

EXCELLENCE REWARD

Jaime Nieto took on the Bridges of Koningsberg and did a presentation to the class on the problem it posed. Jaime simplified the problem and his explanation was brilliant. He clearly understood the maths behind the problem and explored ways of making the problem work by changing pathways and implementing Euler's discovery from over 300 years ago.

Word Millionaire

Faye-Louann Jacka of 7 Blue is our newest Word Millionaire, and the fourth in Miss McKenzie’s tutor group. This is second only to 7 Red, who have six Word Millionaires in their tutor group. I still have plenty of Word Millionaire badges left to award before the end of the year so Year 7s check your word count and get reading and quizzing.

Faye has really enjoyed reading the Harry Potter series of books and has finished both Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child this year. Other books Faye has enjoyed are the Hetty Feather series of books by Jacqueline Wilson: Hetty Feather, Sapphire Battersea, Emerald Star, Diamond and Little Stars.

We have all of these great books in the library so do come in at tutor time or lunch time to return your reading books and grab a new one.

Host Families Wanted

We are welcoming a few European students over the next couple of months and are looking for host families. The foreign students' families will pay our UK families to host their child. The first visitor is staying 3rd - 30th June.

Any family members over the age of 18 in the host family will need to be subject to a DBS check.

Please contact Ms Bennett for more information. [email protected]

If you like reading and want to discover new books, discuss what you have read recently and recommend great books to others then come along to reading club on Friday afternoons in the library. You can either get on with reading independently, read aloud to me to improve your confidence and fluency, or read a book in a group. Students wishing to study in the library are of course welcome to come in and get on with their work.

A group of 60 Year 10 students participated in Maths workshops delivered at MBA by the Operational Research Society. The activities were fun and provided great examples of how Maths is used in real life contexts to solve a variety of problems including making optimal decisions - ‘How to maximise profits or minimise costs?’

In workshop A, students used Lego to model a simplified version of a real life situation (a company wants to design and sell a new range of tables and chairs); then they explored different possible combinations of chairs and tables and finally; they used algebra to find a mathematical solution that gave the best choice.

Students who participated in workshop B took place in the paper cup challenge. They had to make as many paper cups as possible in two minutes: one group made 46 paper cups after optimising their manufacturing process. They finally collected data from every group in order to calculate the average number of cups made in the class: 32 cups!

Summer MixX ActivitiesThe MixX Project is the alternative sessions that students can access outside of the curriculum. These happen before school, at lunchtime, after school and some even happen in the evening or at weekends. This booklet highlights all of The MixX Project sessions available to students this Summer Semester.

The majority of The MixX Project sessions operate on a ‘just turn up’ basis, however some clubs require prior booking so please see the teacher in charge, or email them to check.

There really is something for everyone and the expectation is that all students will participate in some of these opportunities. Students will obtain Vivo points for attending clubs. These activities will also contribute to the Half Colours and Full Colours awards and can be carried forward through the year.

We operate late buses that leave the bus bays at the front of Mounts Bay every evening at 4.30pm. Students must book with Compass staff as places are limited and they run on a ‘first come first served ‘ basis.

Click here to view or download the MixX brochure.

The Year 10 Business and Enterprise students are working hard in preparation for their exam this month. Some have been using past paper questions to build flash cards which is helping them remember key points and terminology. Others have created large posters full of important information. Throughout their lessons we have been using quick-fire questioning followed by explanation to encourage a good understanding of how to answer their exam questions.

Good luck to all Year 10 Business students.

Success After Mounts Bay

Lauren Williams and Rose Christopher, members of MBA Alumni, enlightened Year 11 students during an assembly on Tuesday with their individual journeys post Mounts Bay, to help inspire our students for when they prepare to leave at the end of June.

Lauren talked about how she struggled with academic learning but despite this went on to a Foundation degree in Magazine and Newspaper Journalism and has gone on to establish a successful career she loves as a freelance travel journalist. Her advice was "Make sure you do something you enjoy" and praised Mr Dale and Mr Worsdell for their sound advice whilst at school.

Rose Christopher is studying the IB and stressed the need to make your own choices and not be influenced by friends. Rose is planning a gap year before embarking on a degree in Zoology.

Year 11s were encouraged to register on the MBA alumni: https://networks.futurefirst.org.uk/register/types before their final farewell.

BEADVENTUROUS

It was a case of what comes around goes around for one Year 9 student, last week, when she found herself being put through her paces by the same soldier she had 'instructed' as a child.

When Mia asked if there were any Guardsmen among the soldiers who came into train Year 9s she discovered Guardsman White of the Coldstream Guards had been trained by her stepfather - Lance Sergeant Instructor Stuart back in 2011.

While they didn't recognise each other, as GDSM White was 18 years old at the time, he did remember Mia, aged about six, being brought into the base by her stepdad.

GDSM White recalled Mia being asked by her step dad to tell him which squaddies she liked or didn't like and if she said she didn't like someone her dad made the soldier do extra press-ups.

GDSM White was one of the squaddies picked out by Mia.

On Friday, last week, GDSM White, who did not bear a grudge and was all smiles, had the opportunity to turn the tables when, with the rest of the team, he put Mia and the other Year 9s through a series of tough, physical challenges including the dreaded Bleep test and press-ups.

Mia met the challenge along with the other Year 9s and the majority passed the tests with flying colours.

Maia Fashokun in 11 Red is our Artist of the Week. Maia has explored the principles of the 'chiaroscusro' and 'tenebrism' and the connections of life and death through decay. The blending of image and text is something that Maia has considered particularly carefully in her final outcome.

On Saturday 29th April to Monday 1st May, I competed at the Moreton Equestrian Centre near Dorchester, in the British Dressage South West Region Inter-Counties Challenge (Cornwall, Devon, Gloucertershire, Avon, Somerset, Dorset, Wiltshire and the Channel Islands). We set off from Rosevidney Livery Stables at 12:15 pm on Saturday, It took us five and a half hours to get up to Moreton, travelling in convoy with four other horse lorries.

As we arrived at the Centre it was already packed with other horse lorries and trailers. We unloaded the horses and made them comfortable in their temporary stables. Over the next two days I competed for Cornwall, riding my Exmoor Pony, Northcroft Thistle, aka Thistle in my C Squad test.

Day 1, rain, rain, rain. There were puddles everywhere and I was riding at 1:17 pm. I woke up at 6 o'clock and put on my clothes; brand new white jodhpurs, navy blue riding jacket (with my white gloves in my pocket,) long sleeve white shirt and my posh dressage/ show jumping riding hat, waterproof trousers and waterproof coat. After I had sorted myself out I ran out of the lorry, through the rain and to Thistle's stable to sort him out.

Unfortunately, when it was time for me to walk down with Thistle to the warm up arena the rain started to get heavier and heavier! As I entered the warm-up arena the rain became torrential! It carried on all the way through my dressage test, and by the end of it I was soaked through!

When we got our scores back I got 81% on day 1, and in day 2 I got... 89.28%! The lady in the middle, (Nicky Du Plessis,) is the junior C Squad team trainer.

So overall I'm so happy to have beaten my personal best (87%,). So have to see if I can beat my new personal best 89.28% in another dressage competition! I have had an amazing experience and I'm so thankful that I was able to go to Inter-Counties Challenge!

This week’s word is: La-la Land

Definition: A fanciful state or dream world. Also, Los Angeles.

'La-la land' refers to Los Angeles, which is of course widely referred to as L.A. The expression has taken on a meaning built partly from the place name and partly from the supposed frivolous and eccentric behaviour of the city's movie community.

Etymology:

The term began to be used by the general public around the late 1970s.
