PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Sara Davey Academy Principal

It’s the end of one of the busiest half terms that we have in our Academy calendar. This half term has seen us undertake a plethora of events, learning experiences, international visits and, of course, welcoming a new Year group into the Mounts Bay family.

It’s all about you...

Here, there and everywhere...

Students have also thrown themselves into our Adventure Learning activities with everything from our Real Projects in the lower school, Year 7 camps and one of our most successful Duke of Edinburgh expedition programmes to date.

We have also seen many of our Alumni and staff continue their success, the most recent of which occurred this week when Mrs Mudd travelled to London to be invested into The Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem in recognition of all the work she has done within our community for the last 25 years.

WELCOME YEAR 7

60 students gained their Silver DofE Award, by spending two weekends being self sufficient, on the moors of West Penwith and the coast, from The Lizard to Penzance.

So all that remains is for me to wish you all a very pleasant half term and I look forward to seeing you all on Monday 30th October, just in time for Halloween!

A HAWAIIAN ADVENTURE

“I went to Mounts Bay Academy and now I’m a successful restauranteur and adventurer ”

William Field, Manager, Brasserie Blanc

William Field

Since leaving Mounts Bay William has achieved a great deal and is currently the Manager at the Raymond Blanc restaurant in Bath. He has just contacted us with details of an amazing expedition that he and a team of colleagues undertook for charity recently.

In September this year he climbed Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in Europe to help raise £25,000 for the Christie NHS Trust in memory of a dear colleague.

In his letter to us William said:“We set ourselves a huge challenge with six months to train for the climb, and only six hours of acclimatization beforehand when in reality it takes a year of preparation, with one week of acclimatisation in Italy. “ Throughout this experience and in my career progression with the company I work for there is one quote that I always think of when faced with a challenging situation:

“If somebody offers you an amazing opportunity but you are not sure you can do it, say yes – then learn how to do it later” – Richard Branson.”

Dan Junge from the Coldsteam Guards delivered an informative session to a group of enthusiastic students.  Dan explained the highlights of his

career travelling to Africa, South America and Europe and some of his challenges including being stalked by lions and coming face to face with a hyena.  With a total of 220 different professions on offer from apprenticeship to degree level, all of which are currently recruiting, the opportunities are immense.  If you have a talent in sports you could progress onto playing rugby for the national squad or even earn £47,000 playing golf.  You could train in medicine, music, engineering, translators to name just some of their professions.  Language skills are in demand from soldier to

officer level.   Generous bursaries are available for progression onto degree courses such as medicine where you could gain £2-3000 per term.  MBA students kept firing questions at Dan for the full 45 minutes and came away more informed for their future careers.

Future visits are planned for 9th November with the Royal Navy and Royal Marines and 16th November with the Royal Air Force.  All students are invited to attend.

New Book Series

The Spook's Apprentice, by Joseph Delaney, is a fantasy book set in the north of England where Thomas Ward, the seventh son of a seventh son, must prove himself capable of facing ghosts and witches if he is to take on the mantel of The Spook, the people who keep the county safe from the darkness. But the role is as unpopular as it is necessary and Tom has to decide whether he wants to leave his family for a life of danger and isolation.

We have the trilogy new into the library: The Spook's Apprentice, The Spook's Curse and The Spook's Secret.

Report by: Mrs Marsden

This is one of the most gripping series of books that I have read. The series is called The Wardstone Chronicle and within the limit of one week, I am already on the third book of the series. It is almost impossible for me to put the book down. I easily manage to read 100 or 180 pages a day. I would definitely recommend this book! -  (student review from the BookBuzz website)

The Mounts Bay Academy 24 Hour Gig ran this week, from 09:00 on Thursday morning right through the night to 09:00 on Friday morning.

24 Hour Gig

BE INSPIRED

On Thursday Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 were invited down to watch performances for a whole lesson each for a £1 entrance fee. This was

followed on Thursday early evening by performers from local primary schools joining us between 4:30 and 6:00pm. There were some wonderful performances from these youngsters.

At 7pm the Academy threw open its doors to the public who were treated to a really fantastic evening concert with a wide range of

performances from Academy musicians as well as bands and performers from the community. After the public left for a good nights sleep the intrepid MBA students played acoustic sets right through the night, with some rather impressive karaoke at about 4am! To finish off their epic endeavour the students entertained Year 11 students in their morning assembly - and from the quality of their voices, one would not have known that they had been up all night! Well done to all concerned - we

hope you catch up on your sleep over half term!

BE ADVENTUROUS

Duke of Edinburgh Silver Expedition

Endurance - the word printed on Duke of Edinburgh equipment is a necessary requirement to undertake the Silver Award, and this was

evident in the 60 Mounts Bay students, across two weekends, on the moors of West Penwith and the coast, from The Lizard to Penzance.  On the first weekend, after experiencing brilliant sunshine on Friday, they woke from their tents at Trevedra Campsite at Sennen on Saturday to incessant rain.  In good spirits, at 5.30am they rose, cooked breakfast on their camping stoves, dismantled their tents, packed their equipment

into their heavy rucksacks and set off to navigate another 15 kilometres hike in poor visibility and pouring rain.  On Day 3 'in the Big Brother Household' staff and students woke to the mizzle of the Cornish morning. Despite a few blistered feet and aches and pains, the teams set off for their return journey to school on their final day.

The following weekend wasn't a practice. This was the real thing! Along the stunning coastline from The Lizard to Perranuthnoe, in and out of coves and along steep clifftops, the students demonstrated their map-reading and compass skills and

certainly their endurance.  Teachers and staff on hand to supervise were organisers Mr Lane and Mr Raggett who was accompanied by his son and daughter, Thomas and Harriet.  Also on hand were Mr Helliwell and son, Adrian, Mr Hopper, Mr Kent and son, Rowan, Mr Davies, Ms Murray-Lambrou with her daughters, Tia and Caitlin, Mr Glenville and Ms Jones; all staff were in awe of the enthusiasm, resilience and dedication of our students.

Mounts Bay Academy have had the fantastic opportunity to work with CLEAR over the past two years through CLEAR’s delivery of their Healthy Relationships Programme.

These workshops have aimed;

• To promote healthy relationships and respectful behaviours.

• To promote safe sexual relationships and explore the meaning of “freedom and capacity to give consent.”

• To be able to identify various types of abuse, signs of abuse, the impact of abuse and ways to cope with abuse including how and where to ask for help.

• To develop communication skills, improve self-esteem and have an understanding of what is an unhealthy relationship.

• To have a good understanding of themselves and others.

BE CURIOUS

This year we have had the opportunity to expand this programme further in collaboration with CLEAR. CLEAR are currently delivering ‘Sexting’ workshops to all young people at Mounts Bay Academy until the end of November. The aim of the

workshops is to facilitate a discussion with young people around sexting behaviour, enable them to gain a greater understanding of their behaviours and views, to raise issues of positive use and risky use and to help young people use these mediums and stay safe.

Throughout the year CLEAR will also be delivering workshops to young people on the following themes:

• Positive mental well-being

• Pornography

• Young people whose behaviours affect others

In November Mounts Bay Academy and CLEAR will also be working together to offer 16 young people in Year 10 a fantastic opportunity to become Peer Educators. The young people will be leading and facilitating the Healthy Relationship workshops over the next academic year. The training programme will take place over eight days. This opportunity can be used towards their Duke of Edinburgh Award or Colours. This is a

very exciting opportunity and young people will be playing an important role in the development of peer education and PSHE within Mounts Bay Academy.

Together with Cornwall Children’s Trust, Mounts Bay Academy is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people, and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.

Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children is defined as:

• Protecting children and young people from maltreatment• Preventing the impairment of their health or development• Ensuring that they are growing up in circumstances consistent with the provision of safe and effective care• Enabling them to have optimum life chances and enter adulthood successfully.

The school has a Whole School Safeguarding Policy, and associated procedures in

place to ensure that Safeguarding / Child Protection issues are dealt with efficiently and appropriately. All staff, including our support staff, visitors, and volunteers are made aware of our procedures, and parents / carers are welcome to read the Child Protection and Safeguarding policy: http://mountsbay.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/Child-Protection-and-Safeguarding-policy1.pdf

We are committed to keeping children and young people safe against Radicalisation and Extremism and parents can view our Guide For Parents and Carers.

http://mountsbay.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/Preventing-Radicalisation-Policy2.pdf

Sometimes we may need to share information and work in partnership with other agencies when there are concerns about a child’s welfare. We will always ensure that our concerns about our students are discussed with their parents/carers first, unless there is reason to believe that this is not in the student’s best interests.

Mounts Bay Academy has been given the opportunity to take part in a project that will run jointly between schools and Devon and

Cornwall Police.

Operation Encompass is the reporting to schools, prior to the start of the next school day, when a child or young person has been exposed to, or involved in, any domestic incident.

Operation Encompass will ensure that a member of the school staff, known as a Key Adult, is trained to allow them to liaise with the police and to use the information that has been shared, in confidence. The key adult will ensure that the school is able to

make provision for possible difficulties experienced by children, or their families, who have been involved in, or exposed to, a domestic abuse incident.

We are keen to offer the best support possible to all young people at Mounts Bay Academy and we believe this will be extremely beneficial for all those involved.

The Year 7 and Year 8 girls travelled up to Truro School on Wednesday for their first hockey fixture of the season. The weather was perfect for hockey and upon our arrival the sun

decided to shine a little. Both teams played at the same time with Truro kindly officiating both matches. The teams, although individually have been to practice have not played together yet this season, quickly settled into the play with both teams scoring first against Truro. The Year 7 team continued down this pathway totalling up a victory of 8-0 with India Angove being selected as Player of the Match by the Truro girls. The Year 8 game was a little more hard fought with the score line increasing on both sides, the game finally ended with a 3-3

draw and Freya Prodger was named by Truro School as Player of the Match.

Everyone played fantastically and were a pleasure to take, well done girls.

This week the Year 9 Rugby team played a Cup Match against Hayle School. The Match started with an early score by Hayle but as the first half went on Mounts Bay

started to take the upper hand and came back with a try in the late first half; the boys were playing well we just needed a little bit more. By half time the score was 7-7.

Mounts Bay started the second half strongly, making big tackles and committing men to the ruck. We made lots of ground and nearly made the line but Hayle put up some good defence and we couldn't quite finish. Hayle then had a scrum near our try line and scored, running the ball from

the wing to under the posts, which they then converted. Mounts Bay then came back and nearly scored. Hayle gave away a penalty and we went for a kick, but it went just wide. The match ended 14-12.
