Welcome to this community of cracked pots! We are a local community of fragile clay vessels carrying gospel gold according to the Word today. We welcome any other clay vessels and ask the Christ, the head of this body to encourage everyone today to ‘not lose heart’. That is on Paul’s mind as he writes a second time to the congregation in Corinth. It has been a hard ministry among them. There have been people in the local congregation who have discredited Paul’s gospel teaching and now even his very character, reminding the

community of Paul’s dark past as a persecutor of God’s people. He wrote to try and affirm the gospel among those who wanted the privilege and power of preaching another gospel in this congregation. He writes again to do the same, defend his ministry and himself to a small degree, and encourage these clay vessels to stay close to the treasure that has already been planted in them by the spirit of Christ at their baptism. If you struggle with keeping a strong and courageous heart

for the gospel, for whatever reason, today’s word is one that will encourage you to ‘not lose heart’ and take your rightful place as a carrier of the treasured gospel of life, healing and peace where you live.

Peace Pastor Adrian

Branching Out Session with local Barossa Artist, Janelle Amos Kaylene Rohrlach welcomed everyone to the Branching Out Session with Self Pollinate Artist, Janelle Amos, on Friday 25 May 2018. The evening opened with a visual video depicting the beauty of floral arrangements and artwork and narrated as a spiritual

journey. This presentation was on display at St Petri Church during The Vintage Festival in 2017. The guests were treated to hearing Guest speaker, Janelle Amos, sharing her amaz-ing, creative story and how it unfolded in her life leading to a meaningful expression of discovery. Janelle told her story in a beautiful meditative way, interspersed with learnings of symbolism, imperfections and ‘opening eyes’ to creation’s awesome beauty. Materi-als for Janelle’s mandalas depict nature’s supply from plants and fruits, taken apart to tiny particles and displayed from a central point in a circular mandala. Unplanned, her mandala creation is an unknown artistic path, balancing trust and interruptions, until the final piece evolves and is photographed. Janelle captured our attention with the profound spiritual links to life’s experiences. The guests applauded her story and were also treated to Janelle’s special freshly

brewed coffee, served with a delicious supper. A great night out!

48th District Convention of Synod Report

4-6 May 2018

This years synod was at Tatachilla Lutheran College, McLaren Vale.

As a first timer to synod I did not know what to expect and do. I was given the

”Book of Reports” before going, and read through of it. Seems ok so far.

Friday I left Klemzig (where I was staying) took nearly 2 hrs to get there due to

heavy Friday afternoon,” I want to get out of here traffic” and roadworks near

the old Mitsubishi factory, compared to only 50 minutes Sunday morning.

Friday evening was the start of the convention with a welcoming BBQ. Put on by

Tatachilla students to raise funds for their mission trip to the Northern Territory and

Cambodia. I got talking to some of the other delegates, Bishops and pastors there. Also

found some other fellow Barossa Lutherans there as well. I also met and had a chat with

Christian singer/song writer Robin Mann.

The theme for this year was based on Luke24: 13 – 33 about two disciples

walking together, disheartened and disillusioned about faith and life, and

were walking without faith and hope until a stranger walked with them. The

stranger turned out to be Jesus, who walked and talked with them about the

happenings of the previous days. They invited him for tea. He broke bread with

them, then they realised who he was.

V32 “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and

opened the Scriptures to us”

We had an opening worship service where Bishop David Altus introduced us to the

theme “Hearts Burning”. The principal of the school welcomed everyone, and three

students gave a talk about the land Tatachilla College is built on, their faith journey and

opportunities the college provides for students.

Bishop of the LCA John Henderson addressed delegates and spoke of may issues

facing the LCA including “Ordination of women and men” and “why it need not to be

church divisive”. Theology and domestic violence. Reviewing the LCA call system,

church worker training and Australian Lutheran College. The topic of same sex

marriage was also bought up and how it relates to the church. The Aboriginal church is

an area Bishop Henderson is passionate about and he raised a number of questions

that need to be explored.

Business sessions started Friday night. 2018 budget was presented.

Proposals were also presented. “revised working structure of the SA-NT District”. “A

reduced number of pastors on District Church Council by two”. “Constitutional

changes relating to the development of the Assistant Bishop for Mission position”.

Changes to use of Interest funds from the Zinnbauer Fund to sustain chaplaincy

ministry”. “Annual one day synods” instead of 2 to 3 day synods.

Saturday was business day, going through proposals and voting on proposals.

It wasn’t all business as there were some round table discussions and activities as well.

Break times were good as well as there was the usual amount of food at a Lutheran

gathering, plus also meeting new friends and catching up with old ones.

Bishop David Altus gave thanks to the lives of pastors, their wives and others who have

passed away since the last convention.

David also raised concerns about the ageing of our pastors as there are quite a few

who will be retiring over the coming years, and to equip the laity to do some pastoral

work. Thanks was also given to various people including Helen Lockwood for 25 years

of service on the LCC, 9 years as Director.

The 2019 budget was presented.

Saturday evening there was an informal dinner and drinks plus entertainment was

provided by staff and students of the college. Someone mentioned the word rain

and then it bucketed down on and on for most of the evening.

Sunday morning we had worship and Holy Communion and an offering of $8,000.00

was going to the Alice Springs Playgroup Appeal, ran by the LCC.

Each department of the District gave a 10 minute presentation, 9 in all. A couple of

standout ones where Lutheran Community Care – Hellen Lockwood spoke of the

LCC throughout SA and Central Australia. Two Aboriginal women, Dolly and Leanne

from the Alice Springs Playgroup spoke of their experiences at the playgroup and

what it had done for their families. But government funding has been withdrawn and

nine indigenous workers have lost their jobs.

CFYYAM -Fiona Weckert showed a video which challenged us and will challenge

you. Go to you tube and type in Next Generation AUS 4 3 (https://youtu.be/

NUEzSJES5-M) and watch the video.

Various other talks were given as well.

There were more round table discussions and prayers.

Bishop David Altus was re-elected as Bishop of the LCA. Pastor Tim Klein was re-

elected as 1st Assistant Bishop. Eugene Minge was elected as 2nd Assistant Bishop. They

had the installation of the three elected during the closing worship.

It was a Great weekend, meeting new and old faces. I didn’t know what the word

synod meant but now I do. Thanks to Rita Kroehn for asking me to go. - Greg Minge

Val Petering also attended Convention and because Greg had written such a good

report, didn’t need to report this time. She said that it was a very “positive, happy

event and she thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to attend.

As we come to the end of Reconciliation Week:

• God our Father, we thank you for reconciling us to yourself through the death of Jesus. Help us to see clearly that it is your will that Australia’s Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples be reconciled to each other, and help us to live out your will in our lives.

• Help Indigenous and non-Indigenous Christians alike to define themselves first and foremost as children of God, one people united in Christ. Help all of us to avoid letting tribal attitudes like pride in our ancestry and pride in our cultural heritage stand in the way of right relationship.

• Help us to recognise and accept each other’s struggles with painful emotions like grief, loss, anger and guilt. Help us to be more empathetic and better able to provide constructive help to friends in need.

• May God bless our “Grow Ministry” team: Sharon Green, Leanne Kitson, Barb Alexander & Libby Krahling that they may discern God’s will for our children and youth ministry here at St Petri. May he give them what they need to be great mentors to inspire all of us, of all ages, to acts of kindness and sharing the Gospel with our young ones that they may grow in their knowledge and love of God.

• We celebrate with and ask God’s blessing on Dianne Linke who celebrates her 70th Birthday this week on Saturday.

• We pray for God’s healing and peace for those of our church family who are ill, facing medical treatment or recovering from surgery - and those who care for them: Barb Alexander, Yvonne Angove, Beryl Kroschel, Gladys Falkenberg, Elizabeth Mueller, Rosemary Angel, Erwin & Rosa Vogelsang, Eric Hailstone, David Whitehead and Joan Leahy.

• We pray for people in our church family: Les SCHMAAL, Bob & Lorna NOLL, Peter MAY, Pastor Ken & Joan PFITZNER, Neil ROHRLACH, Kathryn SCHILLING, Richard & Chelsea START, Eileen SCHROETER, Nathan, Heidi, Chloe, Cooper & Sophie SCHULTZ.

We Pray

As winter begins to set in, St Petri seems to continue to warm up! There is much happening around our congregation that tells me we are very committed to our mission in many and various ways. The Governance Council is working away at developing its leadership understanding and structure to do the best it can to ensure we are looking ahead, listening to our people and the Word of God and being in tune to his leading. We are currently working on our five mission focus areas: ministry with children, young people and their families, worship gatherings, adult faith formation, ministry among seniors and developing connections with schools. We have embarked on a partnership with GROW Ministries by which we will be supported and further coached in our development of ministry among our younger people and their families. We are also considering a deeper partnership with the LCA New and Renewing Churches group and what they might help us to be and do into the future. We have continued dialogue around the redevelopment of our church building and there will be more consultation invited soon. Our Child Youth and Family ministry continues to aim to develop our people to make connections with new families and support all of our existing families in various ways, from Messy Church to Kids Connect to Confirmation and more. We have a new way of encouraging adults learners in their learning and living of the gospel coming up soon. More info will be out shortly. Our Seniors are active! The Senior’s Morning Tea recently held was excellent. There are too many groups of seniors to mention here who are gathering for various purposes from Bible Study to reaching out to others, serving in various ways and for the giving of pastoral care. We continue to support our schools (Redeemer and Faith) as well as Nuri High in the ways we can at the moment. We could do more. It seems to me that we are doing what Chosen Strangers are called to do and that is to bear witness to the grace and love of Jesus where he has places us as we serve others and love each other in his name. Well done St Petri!! Peace Pastor Adrian
