The teams announced must be the finest to compete on British soil. The match presents a rare opportunity for bridge players within reach of Cardiff to see the world’s best in action. The venue, the Miskin Manor Hotel, is an attractive country hotel just off Junction 34 of the M4 a few miles west of Cardiff (see travel advice later in this Bulletin). If coming from England by car on the M4, remember you need to have 」5.40 cash for the toll to cross the Severn Bridge. Of course, it is free to go from Wales to England! If you are in a Buffett Cup team and arrive in Wales by train or bus or air, we will attempt to also pick you up at Cardiff Central Station (which is where the bus from Heathrow stops) or at Cardiff Airport, both about 12 miles from Miskin Manor. To do this we will need at least 2 weeks’ advance (continued on Page 2) Julian Pottage introduces The Teams for 2010 The 2010 Warren Buffett cup, takes place shortly before golfers compete for the Ryder Cup, also in Wales, at Newport. Wales may be a small country geographically but these two events are sure to make it light up on the map. I cannot comment on the Ryder Cup but I can tell you news of the line up for the Warren Buffett cup. This features numerous World Champions, is one of the strongest yet and promises to make for exciting, high quality bridge. The team for Europe is: Sabine Auken and Daniela Von Arnim (Ger) Boye Brogeland and Espen Lindqvist (Nor) Giorgio Duboin and Antonio Sementa (Ita) Fulvio Fantoni and Claudio Nunes (Ita) Jason and Justin Hackett (England) Geir Helgemo and Tor Helness (Nor) (non-playing captain Paul Hackett) The USA team is: David Berkowitz and Alan Sontag Fred Gitelman and Geoff Hampson Bob Hamman and Zia Mahmood Bobby Levin and Steve Weinstein Jill Levin and Jill Myers Jeff Meckstroth and Eric Rodwell (non-playing captain Donna Compton) I have shown the players in pairs, as that is how they will play most of the time, but remember that the event will finish with an individual. I understand that each team will play a standard bidding and defensive system in the individual, making life easy then for commentators and spectators alike. (continued on Page 2)

Welcome (continued from front page)warning of your time and place of arrival as wellas a method of contacting you during your travel tocheck that you are still on time. Visitors from theUSA may consider flying to Amsterdam andtransferring to the KLM Cardiff flight. There areno flights from Heathrow to Cardiff.Immediately before the Buffett Cup, the annualWelsh Invitation Pairs takes place on Saturday11th September and Sunday 12th September at StMellons Golf Club between Cardiff and Newport. The field has eight international pairs from outsideWales and eight leading Welsh pairs. Spectatorsare welcome free of charge (last year’s event wasshown on www.bridgebase.com). Players will beable to meet the Buffett Cup teams after the event. In this pre-bulletin, we mention some of the manyattractions for visitors near Miskin Manor andCardiff. Top of the list in my book is the open airNational History Museum at St Fagan’s. Thereyou can happily spend the best part of a daystrolling through buildings from different eras inWelsh history, seeing people working at pottery, farming and weaving, enjoy Welsh cuisine and thestately home and gardens. We have a surfeit ofcastles to see nearby (Caerphilly, Cardiff andCastell Coch). The teams are to visit Cardiff Bay,famous as the birthplace of Shirley Bassey and thesetting for the film Tiger Bay. The docks area hasbeen dramatically rebuilt with a marina asattractive as many in the south of France.Spectating at the Miskin Manor will be free exceptfor a charge for the Buffett Cup brochure, whichincludes biographies of all the players. Allproceeds from this charge (min. £5, optional extra)will go to the registered charity 1991 EducationalTrust for British Bridge (www.etbb.org), whichgives grants to young bridge players in full timeeducation, or those teaching bridge in schools.Cardiff has been host to many Home Internationalsfor the Camrose series but the last bridge eventhere of wider importance was the 1996 EuropeanYouth Championships. I was Onsite Organiserfor that event, too. At the Closing Ceremony, Isaid it would be at least ten years before I took onany such obligation again. I was reminded of thatpromise at the Buffett Cup in Dublin in 2006.Europe v USA is watched throughout the world. Iexpect all those present – players, spectators andvolunteers staff alike – to have a great time. Enjoyyourselves as well as the contest.

Teams for 2010 (continued from front page)BridgeBase will show all six tables of every dealin the match live, enabling hundreds of bridgeenthusiasts around the world to follow the actionas it happens. Spectators will also be welcome atthe venue. A magnificent room provides seatingfor over 100 in the Vu-graph theatre and there willopportunities to watch players live at the table. Ithas been a long time since a major bridge eventlast took place in the UK, and Miskin Manor isright by the M4, so if Brits follow my motto ofgrabbing rare chances when they come along thenwe should have a packed house. This is the only bulletin published before the eventstarts. For further news and information before thefirst daily bulletin, please see the competition'sdedicated website www.buffettcup.com (websitesponosored by Independent Investor).
