SPIE DCE CHAPTER
It has been 1 year since the inception of the SPIE Delhi College of
Engineering Student Chapter, and, as we sit and think about our
maiden term, we realize that although the path was treacherous,
we succeeded in setting a challenging example for our
successors to match. It was never easy to set up a student
chapter specializing in optics and photonics in a college where
majority of the students were undergraduate students in
engineering streams of electronics, computer science, IT etc. But
when the community realized that optics and photonics are vast
streams, incorporating various aspects of other engineering fields,
interest began to grow. We now are one of the biggest student
chapters in DCE with 35 members from various disciplines like
computers, electrical, IT, electronics engineering etc., and that too
in the very first year of our existence.
It has always been our aim to make sure that the members
remain active in the working of the chapter and in the process
improve not only their technical skills but also their managerial
expertise.
It is due to this effort that we are seeing a visible research culture
developing amongst SPIE members at undergraduate levels with
7 national and international publications to their name.
We now aim to better this precedent set by us by working with
new zest in the new academic year.
MESSAGE FROM THE DESK OF OUR HONOURABLE PRINCIPAL PROF. P.B. SHARMA
It gives me immense pleasure that Delhi College of Engineering has been given the opportunity to
showcase the strides it has taken in the field of OPTICS AND PHOTONICS. Since the past few years,
Delhi College of Engineering has seen a rapid rise in the field of Optics and Photonics. Some of the
research scholars have completed their Post-doctoral studies and others are in the process of doing so in
the frontier areas like Photonics Crystal Fibers, Photonics band Gap Devices, Optical Fiber Amplifiers,
Semiconductor Opto-electronic devices, Electron Waveguides, Optical Sensor Technology, DWDM and
Quantum Computing.
Our enthusiastic Undergraduate and Postgraduate students who possess exemplary
interdisciplinary zeal are also involved in various creative R&D activities.
Government of India has also recognized the efforts of DCE in this direction and has granted our
institution a project for establishing a world-class centre in Fiber Optics and Optical Communication under
Technology Mission 2020 Programme – TIFAC CORE. The opening of TIFAC CORE at DCE has
enabled the creation of world-class R & D facilities.
The establishment of SPIE DCE Chapter in 2005 has further created a forum which has acted as
an interface for students and faculty pursing R&D activities in the area of Optics and Photonics. We have
also seen an increase in continuing education program in the field of Optics and Photonics due to
endeavors of student members of SPIE DCE Chapter.
I extend my very best wishes to the student chapter of SPIE at DCE in their future endeavours
and pledge full institutional support to the activities of the CHAPTER

‘One Day Seminar on Optics and Photonics ' and SPIE Student Chapter Meet
IIT Madras, 6th January, 2006
Three student members (Alpesh Chaddha, Arunesh Chaddha, Chhitiz Buchasia) of SPIE DCE Student Chapter were invited for the seminar. Informative lectures by the scholars on various topics on optics and photonics like Optical Tomography and Clastography, White light interferometry, Optical characterization of non linear materials etc. set the tone of the day.
Our presentation on “SPIE DCE CHAPTER: Goals for Future” was received with a warm response. The illuminati present were greatly impressed by the meteoric rise of our chapter in the one year of our existence. The chief guest, Dr. R.S. Sirohi congratulated us and encouraged us to keep up the good work we have been doing regarding developing a research culture in DCE.
Industrial Excursion to ‘Picture Tube Manufacturing Plant’
Badli, New Delhi, 21st January, 2006
An industrial trip of 20 student members along with our faculty advisor Dr. R.K. Sinha to a Picture Tube Manufacturing plant was organized. The students were enriched with a first hand experience of picture tube manufacturing process. A demonstration regarding the construction and manufacturing of cathode ray tube was also given.

He also reiterated the role of technology in transcending international borders between India and US.
He also visited the exhibition set up by SPIE DCE Chapter in collaboration with TIFAC CORE in Fiber Optics and Optical Communication @ DCE. He was impressed by the developing research culture amongst undergraduates and encouraged us to continue our endeavors.
Lecture on
“Datamining for Bioinformatics: Technology and Applications”
3rd March, 2006 On 3rd march 2006 Dr Sumeet Dua, Director DMRL Louisiana Tech. University, delivered a lecture on “Datamining for Bioinformatics: Technology and Applications”. The topic was interdisciplinary in nature and was of germane interest to people from all branches of engineering. The lecture was well attended by student members of SPIE DCE CHAPTER, student community of Delhi College of Engineering and faculty members of DCE. This lecture was first in part of five lecture series that we plan to organize for benefit of student members of SPIE DCE CHAPTER and student community at DCE. The lectures will be delivered by eminent speakers and will be on interdisciplinary topics. We are thankful to SPIE for approving additional funding of $250 for this purpose.
