NEED TO KNOW

● Today, we’re talking about part of God’s purpose for the church: to have a BIG impact on the world by working together to share Jesus with others!

GAME TIME | 10 Minutes

● Play a fun “charades” type game in small groups, pretending to be different machines!

COOL DOWN | 10 Minutes

● Discuss what it means to be a team, and do a team building activity as a group.

LARGE GROUP | 15 Minutes

● Respond to today’s big idea through worship and prayer.● Practice this month’s memory verse: 1 Corinthians 12:27 You are the body of Christ. Each

one of you is a part of it.

SMALL GROUP | 15+ Minutes

● Personally connect with kids and apply the story to their lives by using popsicle sticks and a Bible to demonstrate what it means to be a strong team.

LARGE GROUP | 15 Minutes

● Introduce today’s big idea, We’re part of a team that matters, through the story of The Early Church.

● Scripture: Acts 2:1-12

Page 2: 3rd-5th · 2019. 4. 15. · Video: God’s Story / Peter and the Other Believers Ask: So how did Peter and the other believer in the early church work as a team? (Let kids respond.)

● Ask: What is a team? What are some teams or groups you’re a part of? (Let kids respond.) Those teams all sound really fun, and today we’re talking about the most important team we’ll ever be on: God’s family! So here’s today’s big idea.

● Slide: We’re part of a team that matters.● Say: When we choose to follow Jesus, we join a group of ALL the other

people who have chosen to follow Jesus too! And just like on a regular team, different people have different strengths that they bring. For a team to work well, each person has to use his or her talents to make the team the best it can be.

● Say: Let’s watch a video clip where a team has to use each member’s strengths to win. As you watch, think about how each member helps the team succeed, not just one of them.

● Video: Monsters University Library Clip● Ask: How was each monster an important part of that team? (Let kids

respond.) Yes, they each used their own talents to help win the competition. In the same way, we also have different strengths that we bring to the team. And when we try to do things on our own, we’re not nearly as strong.

● Say: We’re going to look at a team of Jesus’ followers worked together and used their unique strengths to have a HUGE impact on the world. We’re going to call this team the early church. And when we say “church” we don’t just mean the building they met in. It means the team of people following Jesus, depending on each other and serving others! Let’s check out a video and see how this team worked together.

● Video: God’s Story / Peter and the Other Believers● Ask: So how did Peter and the other believer in the early church work as a

team? (Let kids respond.) Yep, they shared everything and spent their time together. They sold what they owned and used the money to help people. They worshiped God together, and even did miracles! They all did these things together, instead of alone. And they all had different strengths and talents that made the team stronger! Let’s play a game to help us understand a bit more.

● Break kids into small groups so that every group has an adult.● Tell kids that each group has to work together to create a different machine using their bodies.● Have kids spread out as much as possible.● Tell each group one of the machine options below, but make sure the other groups don’t hear

what you say to each group. If a kid in the group has a better idea, though, use it!○ Airplane○ Vacuum○ Car○ Toaster○ Space Shuttle

● Tell kids that they will have 5 minutes (or a time more appropriate for your group) to use every group member to make the machine. They have to use their bodies to act it out!

● Have all kids come back to the large group area and let each group present its machine. Allow the other kids to guess what kind of machine the group is acting out.

If you have a smaller group of kids: Have kids break into pairs and work as “mini teams”, or let kids all stay in one team for this activity.

Connect the game to the big idea: We’re going to practice working as teams, just like the early church worked as a team!

React to Game Time● How did you work as a team in that game? ● Why did you need everyone in the group? What would happen if some of the people in your

group weren’t there?● What teams have you been a part of? How did you work together on those teams?● What do you think are the most important things God’s family can do as a team?

Team Building Activity● You can have the whole room do this activity in one giant circle, or split up into a few teams. ● Have kids stand in a circle, with each kid facing the back of the person in front of them.● Now have everyone move in to shrink the size of the circle. Keep moving everyone in until people

are almost touching the person in front side of them. ● On the count of three, get everyone to put their hands on the shoulders of the person in front of

them and VERY SLOWLY sit down on the legs of the person behind them. ● People may be hesitant at first or may end up half squatting, half sitting, but done properly (and

with trust!), everyone ends up sitting on everyone else's legs! (It may take a few tries, that’s okay!)

● Play the 10-Second Countdown Timer to help direct kids attention as you begin Large Group.

● (Click to show Big Idea slide) Let’s review today’s BIG IDEA: We’re part of a team that matters.

● Say: We’ve talked about what it looks like to be part of a good team, so let’s one more video about how important it is to work together, and trust each other. As you watch this video, think about what would happen if even one person was missing from this trick, or if one of them didn’t hold up their part.

● Video: Chair Trick ● Ask: What would happen if one person was missing during the trick? (Let kids

respond.) Yep, they all would fall! They had to trust that each person support each other. God’s family is meant to work just like this! We all need and depend on each other. And if one person isn’t helping the team, it’s not as strong as it could be.

● Ask: So if we’re part of a team that matters….WHY do you think this team matters? What’s the big deal about being part of a team with other people who follow Jesus? (Let kids respond.) Great answers.

● Say: It matters because following Jesus is the most important thing we can share with other people! God wants our team to continue to grow. He wants people to know him, follow him, and love him. And He doesn’t need people to be perfect. A lot of people who followed Jesus made mistakes and messed up. I’m part of God’s team and I still make mistakes! The great thing is: God is the leader of this team and he helps us follow him.

● Say: Let’s check out a verse that we’ll be learning this whole month.● Slide: 1 Corinthians 12:27 You are the body of Christ. Each one of you

is a part of it.● Say: When it says we’re part of the “The body of Christ”, it’s another way of

saying we’re part of a team that’s showing the world who Jesus is!● Pray: Jesus, thank you for wanting us on your team. Help us to find people

this week to invite to be part of your team. We’re so glad that you love us enough to want us on your team. Amen!

● Say: Let’s do something else as a team now–worship Jesus through music!● Music Video: I Am Yours

PRESENTER TIPS

Use a microphone! Even if it doesn’t seem necessary, you’ll find throughout the hour that it’s very helpful in managing kids’ behavior and not having to shout over kids. It also gives you flexibility and control: using a quiet whisper OR excited shouting when needed!

● How did Peter and the other believers work together as a team?● Think about the best team you have ever been part of. What made this team work? ● What qualities do you think are important in a good team, and why? (Trust, honesty, fun, etc)● What would make someone feel like they’re NOT part of a team, or can’t be included?● What are some ways we can encourage others to join Jesus’ team? ● I want you to take the next minute to think of two people:

○ One person who is already part of Jesus’ team. Silently thank God for that person right now (gives kids a few seconds of silence).

○ One person who you don’t believe is a part of Jesus’ team. Pray for God to bring that person into his family.

Give each kid a popsicle stick and marker. ● Tell kids that we’re going to identify some new people who can be a part of God’s team:

○ Think about someone who is already part of their team.○ Then, have kids write that person’s name on one side of the stick.○ Now, tell them to think of someone who’s maybe not on God’s team yet.○ Have them write this person’s name on the other side of the stick.

Take out a Bible. ● Ask kids if one of their sticks could hold up a Bible on its own. (No, of course not.)● Tell the kids that we can’t work on our own either, but together we can be strong.

Challenge the kids to use tape to create a structure that can support the weight of the Bible!● They have to use the tape and ALL of their popsicle sticks. If the group succeeds quickly, try

adding a second Bible or using a heavier object. If they are struggling, try to see if it can support a lighter object than the Bible (like a box of markers, etc.)

● Just as the sticks support more together, our team is better when we support each other.Pray as a team.

● Tell kids that one of the best things we can do as a team is pray for each other! Ask kids if there’s anything they need prayer for, or if THEY would like to pray for someone else. Pray as a group.
