Sparrow Children’s Center Telethon & 21st Annual Doug Griffith Breakfast

3

Sparrow’s Center, UA Local 333 and 3MCA partnered to recognize community service labor leader Doug Griffith and to raise money for the Children’s Miracle Network on Friday, June 17, 2016. Hosted by Labor Community Relations Specialist Claire Corr, the event raised $9,000 this year.

The featured “Miracle Child” was 7-year-old Olivia Borodychuk of Dewitt (pictured left, 3rd row). Olivia’s parents, Chad and Lisa (pic-tured left, 4th row) explained that she was diagnosed at age two with Alexander Disease (Leukodystrophy), a rare disorder of the nervous system. The disease is incurable and children who have it usually succumb to the disease between ages 7 and 10. The Borodychuks are also helping families by donating hand-made pillows to hospitals around the state. The pillows are given to children who are patients at the hospital. The idea for the pillow project came to Lisa when she brought pillows to Sparrow Hospital when Olivia was in the chil-dren's intensive care unit last August. "Olivia cannot breathe if she is sitting up so she had to lay on her side," Lisa said. "If you are doing that all the time, you have problems with your skin. So I started mak-ing pillows to go between her legs as well as her back and head to help support her.”

The Doug Griffith Service Award was presented this year to Randy Freeman, long-time employee of UAW 652 General Motors in Lans-ing (pictured bottom row with Claire Corr). Claire stated that Randy has been in living in the community his whole life and he believes in his community. Randy also goes the extra mile and has no ego.

The event was well attended by many community leaders and is an effective fundraiser for the Children’s Miracle Network, with over $82,000 being raised in its twenty-one year history.

The Sparrow Children’s Telethon on June 3-4, 2016 raised more than $887,000 to benefit the young patients of the Sparrow Children’s Cen-ter. 3MCA and UA Local 333 were phone bank sponsors and jointly donated $10,000. UA Local 333 members manned the phone bank (pictured left), which included UA Local 333 Assistant Business Man-ager Price Dobernick. Executive Director Becky Brimley is pictured left, top row, with the check. The money raised during the telethon will help fund improvements to the Sparrow Children’s Center and ensure the ongoing advancement of medical care for all children in Mid-Michigan – regardless of their ability to pay.

2016 AEC Conference

UA Celebrates Over 60 Years of Industry Leading Instructor Training

6

The Annual AEC Conference was held on August 7-10, 2016 in Seattle, Washington with over 50 atten-dees. The conference included a three-day-in-depth examination of best practices in association manage-ment. Attendees examined and shared the highly use-ful information and strategies on key topics raining from building board relationships to unique new edu-cational initiatives. The objective of the conference is to further the professionalism of staff executives of MCAA’s affiliated associations, empowering them to better serve and represent their contractor members. By all accounts, this year’s conference achieved that objective.

The UA’s Instructor Training Program (ITP) was held on Wednesday, August 17, 2016 and is considered one of the most successful skills training program in North America. Approximately 2,000 instructors from local unions across North America and Australia arrived at Washtenaw Community College (WCC) in Ann Arbor, Michigan to train as peers in the most contemporary skill sets for the next genera-tion. The program encompassed intensive week-long classes in the latest teaching methods and emerging technologies in our trades, and features other events and activities throughout the week. This year’s theme was “Our Commitment to Excellence.”

Nearly 4,000 Attendees Learn About MSU’s FRIB

7

Nearly 4,000 members of the public attended the Facili-ty for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) and National Super-conducting Cyclotron Laboratory Open House on Sat-urday, August 20, 2016. The “Rare Access” event in-cluded activities, demonstrations, presentations and tours that allowed attendees to learn more about a world-leading science facility in operation (NSCL) and one in the making (FRIB).

The four-hour open house, made possible by 130 vol-unteers, offered an array of experiences for all ages. Tours were held in the currently operational experimen-tal areas in NSCL that will be used in FRIB experi-ments and visitors could tour the $730 million FRIB facility under construction. Several hands-on activities and demonstrations showed the fields of FRIB and NSCL research, including playing the isotopolis video game, operating an electromagnetic accelerator, smash-ing model “nuclei” made of magnetic marbles and op-erating a control system like a cyclotron operator. Ad-ditionally, scientists were available to talk about their work on the frontiers of rare-isotope research and sev-eral educational videos were shown in the “FRIB The-ater.” In the presentation hall, speakers gave presenta-tions on the NSCL/FRIB Laboratory, the science being explored and career opportunities for young people.

When FRIB comes online in 2022, it will propel Mi-chigan State University (MSU) and the United States back to the top of nuclear science research. The work of FRIB scientists will focus on the creation of rare iso-topes, some of which have never existed on earth and only for fractions of a second and it will help scientists answer fundamental questions about the origins of the elements and the structure of matter.

Gunthorpe Plumbing & Heating, Inc., Limbach Com-pany LLC and Northern Boiler & Mechanical Contrac-tors, Inc. are jointly working on the FRIB project.
