3 Within Mexico — a nation that’s had its share of ups and downs over the years — the 3M Company shines. And this year 3M Mexico, based in Santa Fe, the business district of Mexico City, is celebrating its 65th anniversary. 3M Mexico currently is growing at six times the rate of Mexico’s economy. Guillermo Surraco, managing director of 3M Mexico, is quick to point out that the company’s success in 2012 is not an anomaly. “We have been growing at a double-digit rate for each of the past three years,” Surraco explained, “and we’ve been seeing great performances in all of our businesses.” Surraco attributes much of 3M Mexico’s steadily growing success to a fixed focus on the customer and the marketplace. “We have incorporated a stronger customer focus in all of our activities, with greater clarity in regard to market direction and opportunities,” Surraco said. “What we call our ‘outside-in’ mind-set incorporates the wants and needs of our customers, the direction of the marketplace, and the actions of the competition.” All to good effect. Fast growth in priority markets In its identified priority markets, 3M Mexico has experienced dramatic growth. After increasing by 36 percent in 2011, sales to the construction markets have mounted by triple-digit percentages this year; mining markets have grown in excess of 30 percent in each of the last two years; and sales to the ferreterias (hardware stores), the light industrial channel, have increased by 20 percent in 2012, following a robust 67 percent growth in 2011. The two largest priority markets — sales to manufacturers in the maquilas (the northern industrial zone), and automotive supply — have both grown in excess of 20 percent. “Over the last year, we have been highly focused on our commercial- ization process,” Surraco said. Specifically, Surraco and his team are focusing on developing products categorized as Class 4 or Class 5 — that is, products that can be altered in such a way that they are able to migrate to adjacent markets (Class 4) or into new industries (Class 5). 3M Mexico stresses the importance of these products because of their high growth and improved profit potential. 3M Mexico’s Vital Few goals New product introductions are one of 3M Mexico’s Vital Few goals — goals that Surraco and his team deem critical to long-term success. Other goals for 2012 include: 1. Achieving an annual growth rate in excess of four times the rate of Mexico’s gross domestic product (GDP). (At the end of the third quarter, it was six times GDP.) 2. Celebrating British Science Week 3M Energy Markets celebrated British Science Week at an Aberdeen, Scotland, art gallery with a special exhibition made entirely from 3M products. Aberdeen artist Mark McCracken created artwork representing the Dana Petroleum “Hanze” oil rig using more than 2,000 Post-it® Super Sticky Notes.   Also on show were a range of 3M prod-ucts — from glass bubbles to personal protec-tive equipment such as face masks and safety glasses — displayed to bring together science, innovation and creativity. “We wanted to mark British Science Week in a way that would increase awareness of 3M and raise our profi le,” explained Lee Roan, general sales and marketing manager for the Oil and Gas business.

“We came up with the idea of commissioning an artist to create an oil rig from Post-it® Notes, as they are the best known of all our products. And then, from that, came the idea of staging a whole exhibition.” The opening of the exhibition, titled “More than Post-it® Notes,” was attended by senior business leaders from the oil and gas industry, including major multinational companies. The exhibition opening was followed by two workshops for local Aberdeen schoolchildren. During the workshops, Roan explained the numerous 3M products, history and various uses of Post-it® Super Sticky Notes. The chil-dren were then given an opportunity to create their own images out of Post-it® Notes. Feedback from the students was positive. “Today was really fun, and the exhibitions are really cool,” one 9-year-old student commented. And another described the 3M inventions on display as “awesome!” The exhibition attracted substantial coverage in the Scottish and trade media.

Customers see 3M innovation in action More than 200 of 3M’s top customers fl ocked to 3M Bracknell, U.K., Oct. 8 to see 3M innovation in action. They spent the after-noon exploring a series of stage sets repre-senting locations such as a body shop, data center, operating theater, building site, metal-working factory and a police station, where 3M technical experts hosted live technology demon-strations. What Wall Street says about sales and earningsFollowing are comments from securities analysts after 3M reported third-quarter 2012 results.

Jason Feldman, UBS Investment Research “3Q sales were a little weaker than we expected, and 4Q guidance was cut refl ecting a more cautious outlook. The 4Q organic growth rate is expected to be similar to (or slightly above) the fi rst nine months of the year (+2 percent); however, 3M previously expected an acceleration in 2H [the second half] led by electronics.”

Nicholas Heymann, William Blair “Third quarter 2012 EPS [earnings per share] were in line with expectations. Despite a challenging organic revenue growth environ-ment, organic revenue rose 2.2 percent from year-earlier levels, with increases in all of 3M’s segments; we believe it is widely expected that long-term organic revenue growth will be adjusted at the Nov. 8 investor meeting, probably to about 3 percent to 5 percent from 7 percent to 8 percent previous. Near-term currency headwinds should reduce 2012 sales about 2.5 percent, but should continue to be off set by 3M’s positive price/cost gap. We expect price gains and foreign currency headwinds will moderate in 2013.”

Scott Davis, Barclays “An operational miss driven by top-line weakness; lowering guidance. Core growth of 2.2 percent was slightly below our expectations but in line with where our average company is coming in for the quarter. Growth remains broadly under pressure, with Western Europe still down and weakness in general industrial

and electronics markets. Incremental weak-ness this quarter seems to be coming from the United States, with China sluggish, but stable. Health care continues to be an area of strength driven by emerging markets, and Mexico up 19 percent was a positive. Auto [was] also stronger than expected due to share gain.”

Stephen Tusa, J.P. Morgan “3M reported a modest operating 3Q miss compared to our model, with revs better than expected based on a lower forex [foreign exchange] drag (same as others), but margins about 20 bps [basis points] below, a break from the margin-driven beat in 2Q.”

John McNulty, Credit Suisse “Management believes the global economy has remained fairly sluggish through 3Q. Geographically, they saw positive growth in U.S. and Latin America/Canada (volumes up 1.5 percent and 6.9 percent respectively) but

Asia Pacifi c and EMEA saw negative trends (volumes down 0.5 percent and 2.9 percent respectively). Looking ahead, they expect trends to remain stable with pockets of continued weakness (i.e., Western Europe) and some growth as well (i.e., NA, albeit the growth is moderating).”

Laurence Alexander, Jefferies “We expect 3M shares to outperform into 1H13 as the market starts to discount a poten-tial reacceleration in the end-market demand in 2H13-2014. An appropriate downside scenario, in our view, would be $80: 12x trough 2014E EPS of $6.70 (5 percent lower volumes and pricing and restructure eff orts lagging raw mate-rials by 1 percent). Upside, on the other hand, could be $140 or better: 18x stretch EPS of $7.85 (3 percent better volumes and tailwinds from pricing and cost cutting).”

One of Mark Strobel’s hobbies is measuring waterfalls. He has leaned over the top of the Pigeon Falls, the tallest in Minnesota, and slowly lowered a weighted bag over the edge until his wife Joan, standing far away, signaled that the bag was touching the water. “You want to do that when the water is low and not running real fast,” explained Strobel, staff scientist, Corporate Research Process Laboratory. The image of Strobel marking a taut rope at the lip of the Pigeon Falls captures two of his great passions. He is an avid outdoorsman who (with Joan, a recent retiree from 3M) recently received an award for volunteer activities in behalf of the state’s parks and trails. And he is a student of surface variations, from the topography of northern riverbeds to the molecular structures atop thin fi lms. For his research on the latter, over a 33-year career at 3M so far, Strobel recently was inducted into the Carlton Society.

A light touch Immediately after receiving his master’s degree in chemical engineering, Strobel was hired to form a group that would increase 3M’s understanding of surface modifi cation. For over three decades, that assignment hasn’t changed substantially. “I’m one of the few technical people who’s had the same job for his entire career,” he said. Unavoidably, he began that career in the shadow of his father, Rupert, a near-legendary 3Mer who eventually logged 43 years and over

a million miles selling corrosion protection products from Siberia to Saudi Arabia. But the younger man quickly distinguished himself as a leader in the technology of changing the surfaces of thin fi lms. Surface modifi cation can take several forms, but most of Strobel’s work has focused on the eff ects caused by exposing a solid (typically a fi lm) to an active gas in order to create a chemical reaction. “It usually aff ects only the surface, to a depth of tens or hundreds of nanometers,” he said. There are many reasons to modify a fi lm’s surface in this way, but one of the primary purposes at 3M is to make the fi lm easier to coat with adhesives and other materials.

Building out from the core Over the years, Strobel’s contributions have touched more than 20 divisions and a wide array of 3M products, including packaging tapes, Post-it® Flags, optical fi lms and medical tapes. Along the way, he’s added a few new skills to his resume: “What’s fascinating and challenging about this work is that one day I’m working on the fundamentals, the kinetics of a chemical reaction. And the next day, I can be down on the factory fl oor with a wrench in my hand. I’ve been down to Nevada [3M Nevada, Mo., plant] so often I think I’m almost able to operate some of the equipment on that line.” During Strobel’s tenure, 3M’s understanding of the techniques to alter surfaces has expanded considerably, although he insists it hasn’t been through great leaps.

“It’s more like we’ve gradually extended the understanding and applications,” he said. “We keep moving from the lab to the factory fl oor and back again, making improvements and increasing our understanding. We kept building out from the core until we’d created a vast array of new surface modifi cation technologies for 3M.”

Living on the edge The surface modifi cation team has never been large — Strobel said it’s typically around three or four researchers — but it has had an outsized impact on the company. “It’s a high-performing group that somehow manages to support 3M around the world,” he noted. Paradoxically, one strategy for leveraging 3M’s strength is to share it: Strobel has published around 30 technical papers, which have helped create important relationships with academic researchers. “You can’t go to confer-ences and just suck in the information and never give back,” he said. “Do that and people will clam up. You have to share your knowl-edge, and then people share with you.” Strobel uses those contributions from academics — and insights his team has gained in the lab and on the factory fl oor — to expand 3M’s understanding. “I like the breadth of what I do,” he said. “Sometimes we’re 2 percent of the solution and sometimes we’re 95 percent. Sometimes we’re just making a cameo appear-ance, but sometimes we’re the key to success.”

This 2012 Carlton Society inductee has spent his career modifying the surfaces of 3M fi lms.

From familiar consumer electronics like laptops and smart phones to next-genera-tion electric vehicles, more and more of our everyday “basic equipment” is powered by batteries. And as demand pushes the market toward smaller and more effi cient devices, the batteries that make them possible need to follow suit. 3M’s Electronics Markets Materials Division — with its portfolio of unique materials used in battery manufacture — is prepared to rise to the challenge. “Our solutions help make batteries lighter, smaller, safer and more cost-eff ective,” said Joseph Koch, business director, Electronics Markets Materials. “As demand for batteries increases, we are poised for dynamic growth.”

A history of innovation Electronics Markets Materials has been supplying battery materials for the consumer electronics industry since the early 1990s, when it introduced 3M™ Battery Electrolytes. Since then, the division has expanded its portfolio to include assembly materials, thermal manage-ment fl uids and adhesives, cathode powders (used at the battery’s positively charged terminal), and anode powders (used at the nega-tively charged terminal). Anode powders represent a particularly vital growth opportunity for 3M, positioning the company to enter new markets that will only get more important in the years to come.

“Our anode materials are made with silicon, which off ers twice the energy capacity of tradi-tional graphite-based powders,” explained Koch. “Higher capacity means we can be more competitive with current consumer electronics customers by making batteries smaller, but also in new and adjacent markets by giving customers more cost-effi cient solutions.”

Automotive drives growth One important new market for 3M’s battery materials is the transportation industry. “Electric vehicles are an important growth engine for our business,” said Christian Milker, business manager, Electronics Markets Mate-rials. “Not only do they represent a growing market, they breed opportunities for developing new and innovative technologies.” Some new technologies have already begun to surface, fueled by 3M’s culture of collaboration and global engagement. For example, the divi-sion’s Canadian business has developed a new solventless nanoscale coating for the current collectors used in electric vehicle batteries. This innovation has enabled manufacturers to develop thinner, more conductive current collec-tors, reducing the overall size of batteries and increasing battery power. Advances have also come from Electronics Markets Materials in Germany, which has

developed thermal management solutions for battery assembly designed especially to help electric vehicle batteries last longer.

Positioned to back-up renewables This same spirit of innovation guides the division in its work with the renewable energy sector, an industry that is both changing at a rapid rate and growing. “Renewable energy is a major mega trend worldwide, and it is quickly becoming a signifi -cant market for us,” said Milker. Just as customers are the driving force behind new solutions for the automotive industry, the real-world needs of utilities have inspired the division to market its portfolio directly to providers of renewable energy systems. For example, “smart grid” solutions, which help reduce strain on the grid by allowing utilities to store energy generated by renewables like wind or solar, depend on the longer-lasting batteries made possible by 3M technologies. “As we interact more with our customers, we get a better sense of how we can work to address their needs,” said Koch. “And now we have positioned ourselves in a very attractive space.”

3M hosts nation’s top young scientistsTen of the nation’s top young minds gathered at the 3M Innovation Center for the Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge.

The Discovery Education 3M Young Scien-tist Challenge may be a competition at heart, but participants walk away with more than just prizes. They gain a valuable opportunity to learn more about science and technology, while sharp-ening their skills to get a better idea of the many rewarding careers in science. Known as the nation’s premier science compe-tition for students in grades 5 through 8, the Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Chal-lenge paired 10 fi nalists with a scientist mentor from 3M. Over the summer, fi nalists explored their interests, each with the help of a 3M scien-tist mentor, and created a unique invention that incorporated 3M technologies and helped solve a real-world problem. Finalists had the opportunity to present their individual innovations to a panel of judges while competing at the 3M Innovation Center in St. Paul, Minn., Oct. 15 and Oct. 16. In addition to their independent presenta-tions, fi nalists participated in two additional challenges, which helped the judges evaluate the fi nalists’ quick thinking and determine the winner.

Rewarding problem-solvers The fi rst challenge, “Uncommon Connections,” had fi nalists work together to use 3M’s core technology platforms in novel ways. Each participant was assigned one of fi ve platforms — fi lms, nonwoven materials, adhesives, ceramics or microreplication — and paired with a 3M scientist familiar with the technology. After taking 20 minutes to learn about the platform from their expert, they collaborated with a fellow fi nalist, sharing their newfound

knowledge to create a new solution that helps mitigate a real-world problem. Next, the “Chain Reaction” challenge asked teams of two fi nalists each to create a complex machine that performed a simple task: turning on a light bulb. Each machine needed to turn on the light within three minutes while also executing a number of additional tasks, such as transporting a marble and incorporating a chemical reaction.

A winning solution This year, the winner of the Discovery Educa-tion 3M Young Scientist Challenge was Deepika Kurup of Nashua, N.H., who designed a cost-eff ective and environmentally sustainable water purifi cation system. Using solar radiation to destroy contaminants, Kurup’s design depended on a catalytic material held in place with 3M™ Glass Bubbles. For Kurup, the best part of the Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge was working alongside her 3M mentor, Jim Jonza, staff scientist, Corporate Research and Develop-ment, to fi nd a solution that could help deliver clean water to people who lack it. “I truly believe that this technology has the power to save millions of lives across the world,” she said. For her eff orts, Kurup was awarded a $25,000 cash prize and a trip to Costa Rica from Discovery Student Adventures. Second-, third- and fourth-place winners — Carolyn Jons of Eden Prairie, Minn.; Anin Sayana of Cupertino, Calif.; and Anishaa Sivakumar of Murrysville, Pa. — all received the Costa Rica trip and a $1,000 cash prize. The remaining fi nalists were each given $1,000 plus a $500 gift card from Discovery Experiences.

The spirit of innovation For Maria Appeaning, research specialist, performance materials, Corporate Research Materials Laboratory, mentoring runner-up Carolyn Jons was a fun and rewarding experience. “Meeting Carolyn was a real treat,” said Appeaning. “She is such an enthusiastic young mind, and working with her to nurture her interest in science was both gratifying and inspirational.” Jons, who used 3M™ Scotchpak™ Products and 3M™ Tegaderm™ Products to create a packaging method designed to inhibit mold growth on fresh produce, also enjoyed the Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Chal-lenge and working with Appeaning — from start to fi nish. “You never know what to expect when you walk into a new challenge during this competi-tion,” Jons said. “It taught me that inspiration can come from all sorts of places, so it’s impor-tant to always keep an open mind.” “3M has a rich history as a champion of science education, and the 3M Young Scientist Challenge helps impart the spirit of innova-tion to this generation of students,” added Appeaning. “It’s a wonderful opportunity to help encourage the next great thinkers.” For more information on the Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge, and to read interviews with the fi nalists and their 3M mentors, visit the website.

Helping make roads safer, building brand awareness3M China’s Motor Vehicle Safety and Services joins with traffi c police to launch a nationwide mobile road safety class.

The downturn of China’s commercial vehicle market went from bad to worse in the past couple years. In 2011, infl uenced by the macro-economy, the domestic commercial vehicle market started to decline. A severe winter in 2012 added to the decline, and the downward trend became even more serious, with production and sales lagging. 3M China serves the commercial vehicle market, and one of its main products is 3M™ Conspicuity Markings for Trucks and Trailers. These refl ective marking tapes are used for road safety management on commercial vehicles, especially trucks and other heavy freight vehicles as part of 3M China’s Motor Vehicle and Safety Services (MVSS) business. For a long time, 3M China’s MVSS has worked in close cooperation with AOEM (automotive original equipment manufacturers) and channels such as inspection stations and auto parts dealers. However, the decline of China’s entire automotive market impacted 3M’s businesses in two ways: for one, most of the AOEMs in China started to replace 3M products with lower-quality, cheaper brands; and terminal purchasers, such as logistics companies and truck drivers, followed suit.

Finding a bright spot 3M China decided to focus and build on what remains of the market. China’s freight vehicle market still consists of 20 million vehi-cles. So there are still millions of freight vehicles that need to be inspected annually, and truck body safety logos that need updating.

The challenge became how to persuade trans-port companies and drivers to select 3M conspi-cuity markings for trucks and trailers, which are of higher quality and, thus, cost more.

Using market research “The competition for [3M conspicuity mark-ings for trucks and trailers] is very fi erce,” said Bruce Zhao, senior department manager, MVSS. National standards specify 15 types, including 3M’s. “Through market research, we found that the key factor to promote the use of 3M’s tape is by educating truck drivers about its quality. But it is challenging to educate these busy people to be aware of the diff erences between 3M products and competitive brands.” To help achieve this goal, MVSS launched the mobile “3M Road Safety” class targeted to logistics and transport companies and drivers. More than 70 classes are planned in more than 60 large and medium-sized cities in China from June 2012 through year end. Some 5,000 truck drivers are expected to take part, according to Zhao. It’s a timely topic. An increasing number of accidents on China’s expressways have attracted special attention by authorities, and traffi c police began communicating road safety infor-mation to transport vehicle owners. So these traffi c police were pleased to respond to the call from 3M, Zhao said, and are actively engaged in the 3M Road Safety class. They explain to drivers the causes of truck accidents on expressways, hazards of protec-tive device failure, how to determine the quality

of body logo products, and international road safety technology reform. With backing from the authorities, local logistics companies and logistics parks invite 3M to conduct this safety education class with drivers at their sites. Through education and demonstrations, the high-quality 3M conspicuity markings for trucks and trailers are gaining more widespread acceptance by logistics companies and drivers.

Expanding their reach MVSS has expanded its safety education by printing 100,000 copies of the “Friend of Truck Drivers” newspaper and distributing them to truck drivers at major vehicle inspection stations and expressway crossings. This news-paper includes both safety information and the latest expressway maps, and has become a popular necessity for drivers, Zhao noted. Vicent Shen, general manager, Display and Graphics, 3M China, added that the 3M Road Safety class is an eff ective way to combine business interests with social responsibility. He noted that MVSS has jointly cooperated with local government departments and communi-ties on road safety mass education in a variety of ways over the years. “The 3M Road Safety class has also received great support from the dealers and positive response from the industry media,” Shen said. “We have signifi cantly improved product recog-nition and helped increase business, and have also fulfi lled a social responsibility role.”

Some 5,000 truck drivers are expected to take part in “3M Road Safety” classes this year. These classes are conducted by 3M China’s Motor Vehicle and Safety Services and local traffi c police. Through education and demonstrations in these classes, drivers are becoming more familiar with the features of 3M™ Conspicuity Markings for Trucks and Trailers, and these 3M markings are gaining more widespread acceptance by logistics companies and drivers.

4. Achieving the stated 3x5 cost-of-goods targets.

5. Progress on the “Mexican Path Forward” — that is, toward reaching $1.2 billion in sales by 2016, up from the estimated $544 million in 2012.

That fi nal goal may be 3M Mexico’s most critical, defi ning the company’s very future. “In working toward that goal, we have undertaken numerous ‘deep dives’ this year. These include a combination of research and analysis of the Mexican economy, 3M’s identifi ed mega trends, and geo-economic developments,” Surraco said. “Through our research, we were able to identify 11 high-growth markets in which we could be more strongly involved and have a meaningful impact.” In many cases, Surraco’s team developed plans for greater localization, as well as investment strategies to support it.

Investment in people, infrastructure “We are investing in innovation, R&D capabilities and new technologies,” Surraco said. “And at the same time, we are investing in our talented people and human resources, to support our growth.” Beyond adding skill sets, 3M Mexico has given serious thought to the expertise needed by its senior managers. “We have been steadily redefi ning the kind of

leadership capabilities we need,” Surraco said. “The way we now defi ne a transformational leader is: one who consistently looks for, enjoys and addresses challenges. “For us, it is very important to continue developing transformational leadership skills because those will allow us to constantly reinvent ourselves and adapt to rapidly changing markets.” 3M Mexico recently opened a 3M Innovation Center in Mexico City, along with a new research and development facility at its main manufacturing location in San Luis Potosi, 250 miles north of the capital. “These additions will support our growth plans, as well as enable us to respond more quickly to market needs,” Surraco said. “Our next step will be to strengthen the connections between our technological and marketing people, to develop solutions that resonate strongly with our customers’ needs.”

‘Everything starts with the customer’ In every conversation, Surraco stresses the importance of understanding customer needs. “Understanding the needs and directions of the marketplace can be one of our major competitive advantages,” he said. “But everything starts with the customer. We are investing heavily in our ability to understand the needs of our customers and in that way gain market share. We feel that this action plan

is well-aligned with the growth strategy of our company.” And just as 3M Mexico has increased its focus on the customer, the customers have, seemingly, increased their focus on the company. 3M Mexico’s reputation is ahead of all of its defi ned competitors. It approaches a favorable rating of 74 percent, ranking it 19th on the list of Mexico’s best companies (Reputation Institute’s RepTrak studies). In addition, its customer retention score is above the global average, and its brand health scores — as measured by awareness, familiarity, and loyalty — have enjoyed a sustained upswing. In summary, 3M Mexico is striving to be recognized as a company that listens to the “voice of the customer,” excels in people and leadership, and drives technology and innovation from the outside-in. “We are well-positioned for both the opportunities and the challenges that lie before us,” Surraco said. “We see the possibilities with a great deal of confi dence.”

In the third quarter, 3M Taiwan went live with the new SAP system to help bring consistency to 3M’s business processes worldwide.

After reaching the fi rst major milestone in Project Polaris, the Go Live goal in Taiwan, 3M’s companywide project to streamline its business processes is off and rolling. “What makes for a successful Go Live? The answer is, owning the solution and supporting the change,” said Chuck Byrne, vice president, Business Transformation. “Through hard work and perseverance, combining the knowledge, resources and experiences of many, we were able to achieve this Project Polaris milestone.”

A coordinated effort The 3M Taiwan team offi cially switched over to SAP on Sept. 3, 2012. The work began with a step called Cutover, a three-day weekend blackout period to prepare 3M Taiwan’s systems for the new software. This involved hundreds of people across the globe executing the same set of directions at the same time — no small feat. “Cutover was a necessary step before Taiwan could go live, and the large coordinated eff ort needed to make it happen was handled bril-liantly by our local and global teams,” said Steve Berg, global pilot lead, Business Transfor-mation. “Because of their combined eff ort, we

were able to complete Cutover successfully and on time.” After Cutover ended and the offi cial Go Live got under way, work began on identifying and correcting issues that arose after deployment: This step is called HyperCare. Here, too, local and global teamwork were the key to success. “This was a signifi cant accomplishment, and — I must repeat myself — it was only possible because everyone worked together as a team,” Berg said. “Taiwan is good at doing the right thing at the right time, and we also had global communications that kept everyone on course.”

Preparing for Release 1b As Taiwan went live, work was already under way in Russia, Indonesia and the Philippines to prepare these countries to go next. Known as “Release 1b” (R1b), the countries in this group are launching together because they share many of the same characteristics, including similar manufacturing infrastructure and high growth potential. When they go live in April 2013, they will build upon the Taiwan experience and serve as a broader test of the new system before the major wave of Release 2 deployments begins in 2014. R1b also serves as a test of cutover and support processes in multiple regions and languages on a 24/7 operational basis. R1b leads John LaPrairie and Brad Bortz partnered with area deployment leads Colin Chua and Claude Richard to offi cially launch Polaris in each of the three countries. Design Awareness and Data Migration Workshops

began at the end of September, marking the fi rst steps toward implementation.

Hire to Retire moves forward The Hire to Retire (HTR) team has also moved forward this quarter. The team completed design sessions for Release 2 of the global project to transform Human Resources business practices, including administration, payroll, time reporting, recruiting and more. The HTR timeline now merges with the Polaris timeline and deployment schedule. Priorities for 2013 include HTR deployments to the European Supply Chain Center of Excellence and Canada (launching alongside their initial SAP “Go Live” dates), as well as prioritized HTR deployments for Taiwan, Russia, Indonesia and the Philippines. In addition, Hire to Retire will deploy the full Travel and Expense component in the above countries and Travel Request (pre-trip approval) globally in April 2013.

‘A source of pride’ Altogether, the eff orts in Taiwan and in the R1b countries, and the development of Hire to Retire, made third quarter a most productive and energizing quarter, according to Byrne. “When plans turn out well it’s a refl ection of many things — with teamwork and preparedness certainly at the top of the list,” said Byrne. “Our success with the fi rst Go Live will be built upon for years to come as we move forward with R1b and it should be a source of pride for everyone involved.”

Driving NASCAR: ‘The sport of business’NASCAR is the “sport of business,” and successful sales programs are driving excitement and growth for 3M divisions.

“NASCAR is a sport that’s made for our businesses,” said Randy Taylor, NASCAR program manager, Corporate Sales and Communications. And, he added, “With plan-ning, our divisions are developing creative promotions and customer incentive programs to drive growth and excitement in their businesses.” To the delight of 3M customers —

end-users and distributors alike — more 3M businesses were involved in NASCAR sponsorship programs in 2012 than in any previous year. Taylor said that a large part of their success is due to the involvement of NASCAR driver Greg Biffl e, who drives the 3M-sponsored No. 16 Ford Fusion. “Greg has been very accessible and willing to connect with our business customers as we work together to co-partner on events for our distributors and retail customers,” said Taylor.

A case in point: Owens & Minor The key accounts group in Health Care worked with Owens & Minor, one of 3M’s largest medical distributors, to build a sales incentive program for its sales representatives. Owens & Minor sales reps who achieved a targeted increase in sales of 3M products became eligible to attend the NASCAR race in Richmond, Va., the home of Owens & Minor’s headquarters. The race was attended by Owens & Minor executives, regional sales directors, and sales reps, along with 3M hosts and executives. All enjoyed a tour of the garage and pit areas and met Biffl e. In addition, Biffl e’s racing car displayed the Owens & Minor logo along with the 3M logo, which made a big impact, providing high visibility for the customer. Altogether, the program resulted in increased annualized sales of 3M products and a deeper

relationship with this important channel partner.

Greg Biffl e, right, driver of the 3M-sponsored No. 16 Ford Fusion, contributes to the success of 3M’s NASCAR pro-gram, according to Randy Taylor, NASCAR program man-ager, Corporate Sales and Communications. “Greg has been very accessible and willing to connect with our business customers as we work together to co-partner on events for our distributors and retail customers,” said Taylor.

Interest in NASCAR is growing around the world. NASCAR is now broadcast in 175 countries.

stores, which increased the shelf space and sales of 3M products. People who purchased Consumer Health Care products with their Rite Aid Rewards card were automatically entered in a sweepstakes for a chance to attend the annual NASCAR awards banquet in Las Vegas. 3M hosted Rite Aid executives at the Pocono Raceway in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania, where Greg Biffl e’s car was wrapped to display both the 3M and Rite Aid logos. With 450,000 consumer entries for the sweepstakes in one month, the number of Rite Aid Rewards cards (which provide

valuable consumer data for Rite Aid) jumped substantially. During the promotional period, 3M’s product sales were the second-highest of all product categories in Rite Aid stores.

‘Wrap and Win’ in the U.K. Some may think that NASCAR is only followed in the U.S., but, in fact, it has grown in popularity around the world. NASCAR is now broadcast in 175 countries. Last year, the Commercial Graphics Division team in the U.K. leveraged the sport’s popularity and launched a very successful “Wrap and Win” competition for customers and distributors. This year, the U.K. program was expanded

to include more products — such as vehicle branding and wrapping, and sign making — purchased through 3M’s trade suppliers William Smith and Spandex. The “Wrap and Win” program includes monthly prizes for customers, and the sweepstakes prize is an all-expenses-paid trip to attend the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Race in Las Vegas in March 2013. The winner and guest will also meet Biffl e and the Roush Fenway motorsports racing team. The 2012 NASCAR season ends Nov. 17 at the Homestead-Miami Speedway. The 2013 NASCAR season opens Feb. 16 at the Daytona International Speedway.

3M launches new streaming projector powered by RokuThe new 3M™ Streaming Projector lets consumers go wireless and go big when they access Internet content for entertainment.

3M and Roku have teamed up to create a fi rst-of-its-kind product: the 3M™ Streaming Projector. Like some of the other products from the Mobile Interactive Solutions Division, the device can project a large image (up to 120 inches) despite being small enough to fi t in the palm of your hand. But with the Roku Streaming Stick, the projector can wirelessly access over 600 Internet channels — including free channels like Crackle and for-pay content providers like Netfl ix, Hulu Plus and Amazon Instant Video — using a home Wi-Fi connection. The device also boasts a battery life of up to 2 hours and 45 minutes (more than enough for most movies and TV shows). It has a built-in speaker as well as a 3.5 mm stereo headphone/speaker mini jack output for creating your own theater-quality sound atmosphere. “We designed this for consumers,” explained Gabe Wiebenga, marketing communications manager, Mobile Interactive Solutions. “While there are other streaming options on the market, this one is unique in two ways. First, you can easily move it from room to room. Second, the image can be really big. Put those together and you get instant cinema.”

Setting the scene The product launch demonstration with the media was held in New York City in early October. At the event, there were use-case

vignettes designed to illustrate three of the many ways consumers can use the new 3M Streaming Projector. “In one room, we draped a sheet over a clothesline and let people see how it can perform for an outdoor movie,” Wiebenga said. “We had another room set up like a kid’s slumber party, and there we projected the screen to over 180 inches, which covered an entire bedroom wall. For the third scenario, the projector was set up to project on a family room ceiling. Seeing these vignettes, the media quickly saw the portability, the large screen capability, and the image quality. The event also featured a demonstration area where the attendees had a hands-on experience showing the ease of use of the product. “We look at this as a great solution for a barbecue, slumber party or family movie night — anytime you want a big picture but don’t want to be tethered to a TV,” he added. “It’s one of those devices that could touch your life almost any day of the week.” And for nights when the kids (or adults) want to play video games for three hours or longer, the projector comes with an AC adapter. (Roku sells a remote for use with the games available on its gaming channels; alternatively, other gaming consoles can be plugged into the MHL/HDMI slot.) Wiebenga said those who attended the launch event were “amazed at the quality of the image,” which uses the same technologies found

in many digital movie theatres. “We’ve been making projectors for a long time, so we were able to draw on that expertise to create a strong, sharp image, with consistent brightness from corner to corner.”

‘Just plain fun’ Initially, 3M researchers proposed that Mobile Interactive Solutions’ projector technology be integrated into one of Roku’s streaming devices for TVs. Roku declined the off er. A few years later, when Roku was working on its miniaturized Streaming Stick (designed to be plugged directly into an MHL/HDMI slot on a TV), its researchers remembered 3M’s proposal and discussions began about a Streaming Stick-compatible projector. Reviewers seem impressed with the results. Popular electronic and software website CNET found the 3M Streaming Projector “just plain fun to use. Streaming Netfl ix and Amazon Instant wirelessly on the nearest wall

is an undeniably cool trick and surprisingly enjoyable.” The 3M Streaming Projector currently is available exclusively at Amazon.com for $299.

At the recent product launch demonstration for the media in New York City, three vignettes show various uses for the new 3M™ Streaming Projector: at a child’s slumber party, left; for viewing an outdoor movie, above; and projecting on a family room ceiling. These vignettes were designed to show the portability, the large screen capability, and the image quality of this new product.
