White:Studio 400 Book Show

Woven from 80,000 sq.ft. of plastic, White employs traditional tectonics along side contemporary ideas of form. The structurally supportive web transformed the Berg Gallery into an interactive environment for the display of our studio’s thesis books. Two distinct spaces were formed: above and below, each providing a comfortable setting for the enjoyment of our books. The underside was filled with woven pillow seating to provide communal gathering spaces beneath the columns of light. Above provided a fun and active canopy that accomodated climbing, rolling, crawling, and sitting. The deformable surface responded to the movement and distribution of users creating a dynamic interaction between the two spaces.

The installation was a collaboration of our thesis studio that began from individual concept submissions. The rendering and diagram were my contributions to the initial schematic brainstorming session. The final installation incorporated much of the essence of my submission, adapting the form to fit the specific conditions of the gallery space.

05 Yucca Crater /Talus Dome:Ball-Nogues Studio

My internship at Ball-Nogues Studio focused on the fabrication and construction of the formwork for the Talus Dome. After the form was used to set the stainless steel balls in place, it was repurposed into Yucca Crater. Two projects were created from one construction process, re-utilizing the necessary form work of the Talus Dome into its own project, Yucca Crater. The form work was fabricated in Burbank, California. The form was the filled with varying stainless-steel balls which were structurally welded to one another after my internship concluded. The welded sections were shipped up to Edmonton, Alberta to be installed along the Quesnell Bridge as a sculptural mirror to the landscape.

After assembling and programming a new cnc-router at the construction site in Burbank, fabrication of the parametrically designed pieces began. The form work was routed and screwed together in sections which were then lifted and bolted into place. The distribution of the nearly 1,000 polished spheres were designed based on structural loads, employing form finding techniques to determine the mound’s overall form. Custom fit tabs were water-jet cut out of steel, and hand bent on cnc-routed jigs to connect the various sized balls to each other. The “cross-designing” of the two projects questioned the relation between art and its by-products.

DTLA Gateway:Los Angeles Cutural Hub

Designed as an iconic entrance to the civic core of downtown Los Angeles, DTLA Gateway provides a cultural hub for the city. A variety of theaters, galleries, and market spaces are integrated to create a vibrant center for cultural interaction. The form was derived from a series of animations that I created to explore fractal geometries in motion. Unique to the project is the building skin whose inflatable modules respond to its climatic environment to help maintain thermal comfort. As internal temperatures rise, the skin inflates with the building’s warm air to increase surface area and dissipate heat. As it cools, the strands droop to provide an additional layer of insulation.

Completed during my independent study with Dr. Stephen Phillips in the L.A. Metro Program, I took the opportunity of being in Los Angeles to better understand my site and its context. My project is situated at the intersection of the 101 and 110 freeways, marking the northern tip to downtown. Analyzing the site’s relationship to civic and cultural heart of Los Angeles motivated the project’s mission to provide an iconic entrance point to Los Angeles. The site itself was explored as an earthwork which has been carved to activate a manufactured landscape which responds to the gestural forces of the project.1.

Obscura Wall:IwamotoScott Architecture

My internship at IwamotoScott Architecture focused on the Obscura Wall. The 30’ steel screen functions as a book case and spatial divider between the shared office space of IwamotoScott and Obscura Digital. The undulating wall is composed of nearly 200 unique steel boxes of all different dimensions. The spacing between the laser-cut boxes varies based on curvature, creating a dynamic visual effect as you move across the space.

To create the desired porosity, each box had to be individually detailed to create the proper connections between neighboring modules. Much of my internship involved the detailing of connections and the generation of cut-files that were sent off for laser cutting. Custom bending jigs were also designed to accommodate the various angles of the folded boxes. The boxes were then individually powder-coated and riveted together into their final assembly.

DTLA Gateway:Los Angeles Cutural Hub

Designed as an iconic entrance to the civic core of Los Angeles, DTLA Gateway provides a cultural hub for the city. A variety of culturally sig-nificant programs at many scales are housed in the project. The form was derived from a series of animations, which explored fractal geometries in motion. A kinetic fur-like building skin responds to the environment, inflating and deflating throughout the day to help regulate internal temperatures.

SWARMbrella:Kennedy Library Installation

Designed as part of the Re-Kinetic exhibit displayed in Cal Poly’s Kennedy Library, SWARMbrella explored modularity through the concept of a swarm. Acting as a flexible skin, the movement of each module affects the behavior of its neighbors as would a swarm. The surface can twist and turn without sacrificing structural rigidity. The installation was selected to remain on permanent display in the library’s atrium after the conclusion of the exhibit. The design was later entered into the Architecture for Humanity Street Furniture Competition in Chicago where it was selected as a finalist.

Developed through several iterations across two quarters, the project carried initial conceptual ideas across to the final built work. We began by first developing a module that was kinetic with potential for repetition. The final module was crafted entirely from the reassembly of umbrella components. The modules were later understood as individual members of a swarm which developed more complex behavior acting together. The initial module was repeated to create a kinetic skin from a re-purposed object.

Re-Ligare Institute:ACSA Steel Design Competition

The Re-Ligare Institute serves as an escape from chaotic city life, where one can go to reconnect their mind and body. Programmatic spaces dealing with the mind and body are separated by a vertical void, which creates a series of atrium spaces throughout the project. Its connection to New York’s Highline pulls the limited green space of the city vertically up through all levels of the high-rise, reintroducing nature into the dense urban fabric.

The design was developed in two-stages across a two-quarter studio. The first quarter was an individual effort that resulted in an entry to the ACSA Steel Design Competition. My individual project was chosen to represent our studio at the “Best of Show” Third year review. The following quarter we were paired up and asked to synthesize our two designs into one project using the same program and site.
