The Operators Harmonization Group (OHG) - a group of major
operators from all parts of the world - has played a key role in thisprocess, and agreed on a set of standards in May 1999.

3G NETWORKS - The complexities behind them.
The core network is the physical network infrastructure to which the radioaccess network is connected in a mobile network.
A radio access network is the portion of a mobile network that handlessubscriberaccess, including radio base stations and other nodes.
In the case of 3G, a different approach is being taken. There is onestandardization process for the radio network and another for the core network.
The 3G radio access network will comprise a RNC (Radio Network Controller)and Node B.

Where is the new radio spectrum?
International standards and regulatory bodies have set aside radiofrequency in the 2GHz band.
In 1992, theWorld Administrative Radio Conference (WARC)
allocated 230MHZ of new radio spectrum to terrestrial and satellite
services. Of this, the ITU has set aside 155MHZ in the 2GHZ band for
terrestrial 3G services, as shown in the chart.

To use 3G users specifically need:
A mobile phone or a terminal which supports 3G
A subscription to a mobile network which provides 3G
Knowledge of how to send/receive information using their specific
model of mobile phone and hardware and software requirements. A destination to send and receive information using 3G.

What will future 3G terminals be like??
Many of these will have larger screens to display Internet pages or the
face of the person being spoken to.
There will be smaller "smart-phones" with limited web browsing and e-
mail capabilities.
Addition of mobile communication facilities to laptops and palmtops willspeed up the convergence of communications and computing
There will be videophones, wrist communicators, palmtop computers, and
radio modem cards for portable computers.
Innovative new voice based interfaces will allow people to control their
mobile communication services with voice commands.
Mobile services will be built into business equipment, vehicles and
household appliances, for dedicated applications.

Advent of 4G is expected in 2010.
Three dimensional virtual reality will be enabled for the first time- imagine
personal video avatars and realistic holograms the ability to feel as if you are
present at an event even if you are not .
People, places and products will be able to interact, as the cyber and real
worlds merge.
3G is a substantial leap forward in mobile bandwidth and capacity.
4G will be another giant leap forward providing unprecedented broadband
communications
