With the Editor away on leave, I staunchly ventured to temporarily step into her shoes to get telewave to our customers.

And what better time than in the autumn, when the colours are changing, and we wind down from summer and move toward - ahem, winter.

Before winter sets in, the Telecom Namibia road-show “The Great Namibian Journey – Switch is fully Mobile” is currently taking place in the North, making hay while the hot Namibian sun shines. As a truly Namibian company, Telecom Namibia is celebrating the country’s cultural diversity and promoting its products as truly Namibian and for Namibians.

More good news? We have launched a promotional plan that will allow users to avail our 1x and 3G EVDO prepaid mobile internet packages at an once-off discounted price of N$499 and N$649 respectively. And then there’s the fantastic opportunity for free activation of mobile broadband services. We also have attractive Mobile Broadband packages, which double the usage at no extra cost.

With all these specials, we’re confident that our offerings are ideally suited for your home and business networking needs.

Thank you for your continued interest in our products and services and I look forward to serving you in the near future.

Chao to you all,

Oiva [email protected]

Switch in OShana

First it was in the Oshana region on Saturday,

March 27th at the Mayor’s Garden in Ongwediva.

And on 3 April the celebrations moved to the

Omusati region under the Baobab tree opposite

the Outapi Town Council Offices.

Hundreds of people under perfect weather

attended the Switch festivals at both Ongwediva

and Outapi held under the theme, The Great

Namibian Journey – Switch is fully Mobile, in

celebration of their cultural richness.

The festivals are part of a road-show to promote

Telecom Namibia’s Switch Mobile services

through showcasing Namibian culture and what

makes each person a great Namibian. As a truly

Namibian company, Telecom Namibia is celebra-

ting our country’s cultural diversity and promoting

its products as truly Namibian and for Namibians.

Switch in OmuSati

Yes, the Switch celebration is one of fun and

good times.

The performance done by cultural groups from

local schools showcased a series of brilliant rendi-

tions, each time getting huge audience applause!

The musical bands and artists kept the crowd

on their feet with their pulsating beats. Others

thrilled the audience with their high-energy

dance and acrobatics.

Participation by primary and secondary schools

in Omusati was particularly good and is a reflec-

tion that culture is still very much alive among the

youth in this region. A total of 8 schools partici-

pated in both the dance and singing categories.

A panel of judges selected the best exhibitors

and performers from each category and awarded

cash prizes to the winners.

The next road-show takes us to Oshikoto and

Ohangwena... See ya there!

Teletips

become a debt-free telecom Customer

Debt can wreck havoc on a person’s life in many ways, including causing problems at home and at work. It can bring up feelings of anxiety, anger, shame, and depression and can even lead to the breakdown of a marriage, or the loss of a job or home.

Telecom Namibia’s General Manager of Finance & Administration Robert Offner gives some advice in a short interview with telewave.

The financial crisis is far from over. What advice would you give a Telecom Namibia customer during these tough times?Always live within your means. When you get paid, pay off all the debts owing for the month and then use your remaining funds for the monthly costs. Try and pay higher interest bearing debt quicker.

Avoiding debt is one good way of living a stress-free life. What main tips can you give a Telecom Namibia customer on how to become debt-free? I come from the old school where the only debt one should have is for your house and car. Try and avoid debt repayments terms for consumables like clothing and furniture. Once again, live within your means, wealth comes with time and so should the luxuries like pay TV, expensive mobile devices and flashy fur-niture and car accessories.

Why is it so important for a customer to save now and spend wisely? If one considers that you retire at the age of 60 and likely live till you 80, that’s 20 years of little income. Investing in your pension is imperative. Also one should always plan for those “rainy days” like car repairs, unforeseen medical emergencies, and so on.

How can a customer remain debt-free after successfully managing to pay off their accounts? Plan from month to month, if there’s something special and ex-pensive, put that money aside and buy cash. When wanting to buy furniture, clothes etc on payment plans, do yourself a favour and multiply the attractive monthly installment by the term of the plan. Compare this to buying it in cash and you’ll most likely be shocked as to how much the interest and other hidden charges are.

Lastly, give one good reason why customers should not have debt with Telecom Namibia?Whilst telecommunication services are a key enabler for business and keeping updated with friends and family, it’s also an essential service for emergency. Thus keeping the channel open by paying up to date, is an insurance policy to reaching out for assistance if needed.

Debt relief is a serious problem for most Namibians. We live in a society where everyone wants the coolest gadgets, a nice car and a nicer house. There’s nothing wrong with that. Unfortunately, the good life that you’ve worked so hard to achieve is not free, nor does it come cheap.

I love my job because…I can combine my technical skills with my interpersonal skills to make a success of a project. Furthermore, I love the exposure that I can communicate and collaborate with my colleagues at different levels.

The three main character traits of the job that I do are… good oral and written communications skills, strong inter-personal and decision-making skills, and the ability to multi-task as well as working well under pressure.

My best ICT tip is… ICT is at your fingertips, so make it your business to become a knowledgeable worker.

My ideal workday starts with… clearly outlined tasks and deliverables such as holding meetings for overseeing the status reports for projects with all employees, suppliers and consultants involved.

I cope with a heavy working day by… drinking enough water (hint=dehydration also causes stress) and you’ll look and feel better. Furthermore, I take a few deep breaths for those fiery moments to block out from meetings and back in the office a few neck stretches do the trick.

What keeps me motivated is… a good challenge. I perform well, mostly when challenged with difficult things. Undoubt-edly, I am also passionate about initiatives that add value to the company.

She is one of Telecom Namibia’s few phenomenal women pursuing a career in the male dominated ICT sector. As an Operating Support Systems & Business Support Systems Consultant /Project Manager, Valerie Garises holds a Masters Technology Degree in IT and several international certificates. In this interview telewave get’s to know her better.

My advice to newcomers in my field of work is… READ, READ, READ. Get training and acquire skills. Knowledge is power but applying knowledge gives you experience and wisdom.

The one thing that people did not know about me is… I am enthralled by Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP). NLP is a set of ideas that can help you understand how people think, and how you can influence them to think differently.

My secret to success is…. Success is a marathon, not a sprint, so never give up.
