Inco Granted RightsTo Mine in Guatemala

Henry S. Wingate, chairman ofthe board of The InternationalNickel Company of Canada, Limit-ed, has made the following state-ment:

The Company's Guatemalansubsidiary, Exploraciones y Ex-plotaciones Mineras Izabal, S.A.,following a number of years ofexploration work, has been grantedmining rights over approximately386 square kilometers in thevicinity of Lake Izabal in north-eastern Guatemala. The rights aregranted for a term of 40 years.

'The goal of the subsidiary is toestablish facilities in Guatemalafor the mining and treatment oflateritic ores with a capacity atthe outset for producing a productcontainfng at least 25,000,000pounds of nickel per annum. Theindications are that there will besufficient ore to support an outputof this size for the life of theconcession and that the ore averages approximately 1.5 per centnickel. It is estimated that thecost to provide facilities in Guate-mala to produce 25,000.000 poundsper year will be in excess of50,0OO000. The subsidiary will

promptly proceed to develop thefinancing arrangements for theproject and the related engineer-ing studies.'

RoadsTo date, 13 miles of roads have

PopulationIn 1961 the population of

Thompson was 1,300. By 1963, ithad increased to 7,500 and, withan additional increase of 1,000 in1964 and 1965, the population nowstands at 8,500 persons.

Hospital and Medical ServicesTo date, 1,490 children have

been born in the modern Thomp-son hospital, which Is owned andoperated by Inco primarily foremployees and their dependentsand to provide hospital service forother residents of the town. Thehospital has a staff of 40, and agroup of local physicians, currentlyfive in number, operate a largetwo-storey clinic separate from the

I hospital.Utilities

Manitoba Hydro's Kelsey gen-erating station on the NelsonRiver supplies power to both thetown and plant. All homes utilizeautomatic oil or gas heating and

i electric power for lighting andcooking.

Potable water for both the townand plant Is obtained from theBurntwood River upstream fromthe town and is treated in a mo-dern water treatment plant. Alsolocated on the outskirts of thetown Is a modern sewage treat-ment and disposal plant.

Telephone service in Thompsonis provided by the Manitoba Tele-phone System from a fully auto-matic exchange. A scatterwave1 0 n g distance system connectsThompson with other long dis-tance systems in Canada.

HousingThompson now has 1,700 com-

pleted dwelling units, consisting of1,125 single family houses, 24 du-plexes and 551 apartments.

SchoolsA third elementary school, con-

taining 16 classrooms, was openedin September, 1963, bringing thenumber of school classrooms inThompson to a total of 60. Thenumber of students in the threeelementary schools and in the highschool as of June, 1965 was 1,401,with enrollment in September,1965, expected to be 1,550. Afourth 12-room elementary schoolis now under construction.

Commercial DevelopmentBusiness enterprises in Thomp-

son now number 146, with 31 ofthese located in a fully enclosedmodern shopping plaza. A newshopping plaza, 'Burntwood Vil-lage', containing a Safeway supei'market and space for additionalretail outlets, is being built.

ONE OF THE BIGGEST single recreation developments in the history of Manitoba is the project now underway on asite immediately behind the Thompson High School, where buildings bought from the dismantled Bird radar station arebeing assembled, As the picture shows, the steel is up for the big recreation hall, and foundations have been pouredfor the six-sheet curling rink and the hockey arena. Beyond the recreation complex con be seen the 20-acre sportsfield which has been cleared alongside the Burntwood River and will be seeded to grass.

Don Alexander, St. Lawrence Seaway regional informationocer, showed them how small ships' models, moving through simulatedchannels and locks on worm gears, provide a constant appraisal of all vesselmovements and locations. The vessel despatcher, shown in the background,is in touch with all shipping in the Canal by FM radio. On a busy day morethan 40 ships pass through the Welland Canal, and this plotting board greatlyaccelerates their movement.

8,000 Ships a Year Pass ThroughPort Colborne, Big Canal Terminus

To Inco nickel refinery em-ployees at Port Colborne the sightof an ocean-going ship passingright through the heart of theirtown is no more a novelty than isthe fiery beauty of the slag dumpto their northern cousins.

Port Colborne sits astride theLake Erie end of the WellandCanal. an integral part of the St.Lawrence Seaway providing f a -cilities for large lakers and oceanvessels to navigate from Montrealharbor to the heart of the NorthAmerican continent.

Last year more than 8300 shippassages were made through theWelland Canal and during thebusy summer months it providedan almost constant flow of traffic.Ships pass through the canal toinland ports from more than 50overseas countries. However, thework-horse of the Seaway, the in-land bulk carrier, outnumbers salt-water ships, or "salties". two toone.

Since the days of the Canadianfur trade the chain of lakes andrivers has provided an excelleutroute for the development of in-expemive transportation. Howeverthe value of these inland water-

ways could only be fully realizedwhen turbulent sections at keypoints were overcome or bypassed.A major obstacle to an uninter-rupted water route was the fallsand rapids of the Niagara River.

To bypass nature's wonder re-quired a man-made wonder, andthe giant locks and channels ofthe welland Canal may be re-garded as one of the engineeringmarvels of the 20th century.

A difference of 327 feet betweenthe levels of Lake Ontario andLake Erie is overcome with eightlocks and 26 miles of channel.Each of seven lift locks has anaverage lift 462 feet. while Lock8 at the Lake Erie terminus is aguard lock with a shallow liftvarying from one to four feet tomake the final adjustment to thelake level.

Vessels 730 feet long and 75 feetin the beam may travel throughthe Seaway locks. Such giantlake vessels carry more than 28,000tons of iron ore or 1,000,000 bushelsof wheat. Iron ore and wheatconstitute the most important car-goes carried through the canal,and the two-way nature of theirmovement i very significant to

At a sharp rise of the Niagara escarpment three 'flight locks", like a flightof stairs, raise or lower ships a total of 139 feet. The three flight locks aretwinned, as eventually will be all locks in the Welland Canal, so that upboundand downbound traffic moves through simultaneously. Wheat is brought downboundthrough the Seaway from Canada'sJ,akehead to a port on the lowerSt. Lawrence River. More than 60 of theupbound cargo through the Wel-land Canal is iron ore,

Canada's average wheat produc-tion is 500 million busheLs; theamount of wheat and wheat flourtransported through the WellandCanal has averaged 209 millionbushels, emphasizing the import-ance of the Welland Canal to oneof Canada's prime exports.

Other major bulk commoditiesare coal, pulp and petroleum pro-ducts. A wide variety of otherbulk products, and increasingamounts of manufactured andpackaged goods also contribute tothe traffic of the canal.

Cargo tonnage through the Wel-land Canal has more than doubledsince the St. Lawrence River sec-tion of the Seaway opened In 1959.Last year it was 51.4 million tons.The average size of vessel and itscapacity has also Increased; morethan 50% of the cargo tonnage isnow carried in ships over 600 feetlong.

Plans are now on the draftingboards for the twinning of theWelland Canal, an enormousmodernization project to accom-

First Canal Opened In 1829In 1829, five years after the first

sod was turned, two schoonerscompleted a two-day upboundtransit through the first WellandCanal,

Natural waterways were utilizedto a great extent. From Port Dal-housie on Lake Ontario, the canalfollowed the route of Twelve MileCreek through St. Catharines to

search engineer J. N. Grassby, andassistant to the general manager W.Curlook.

Two Inco films, "Milling and Smelt-ing of Sudbury Ores" and "Corrosionin Action" were shown, after whichthe students noyed informal discus-sions with the executive officers andsenior supervision who attended theenjoyable gathering.

Across the broad front of International Nickel's operations the drive for processmprovements never lets up. Studies and experiments on prolects to betterplant efficiency or develop new methods are continually underway in the lncoprocess research program that has produced many major advances in thetechnology of the nickel industry. A case in point is the development of aiew process for electrolyte purification at the Thompson nickel refinery, as aresult of which further improvements in the refinery are being undertakenwhich will permit savings in operating costs and will increase refinery capacity.In the above picture at Thompson, closely scrutinizing one of the flow diagramsdepling with the new electrolyte purification process, are Inco assistant vice-president and manager of process research Canada Louis Renzoni (standing),chief draftsman Ernest Kalmanovitch, research superintendent Ben Brandt, andrefinery superintendent Bill Spence.

Next to the knowledge of andfamiliarity with weapons, colorsafety is perhaps the most inipor-tant subject for those joining thehunting fraternity.

It isn't safe to wear colors thatmake the hunter look like a deeror a nioose at a hundred feet.Beige. grey or brown shades shouldnot be worn. The animals wearthese colors and look what happensto them!

Contrary to popular belief,bright red is not the best color.Many men are color blind and thewearer will look grey to them.Faded yellow, orange and crimsonare Fall foilage shades and anyonewearing them will look like anammal moving through the bush.

It's a good idea to experimentwith color by taking a piece ofbright blue cloth, or blue-and-white, or black-and-white checkand comparing it with the usualcolors of hunting clothes from ahundred feet away.

The important thing to remem-ber is that it's the fellow hunterwho needs to be warned - theanimals are color blind anyway!

Indian and white man stood sideby side to unveil a bronze plaquecommemorating the old Hudson'sBay Company Whitefish Laketrading post on Highway 17 W atNaughton.

Edward Nootchal Jr., a memberof the Naughton Reserve IndianCouncil, and George F. Maconnell,manager of the Hudsons BayCompany raw fur department atNorth Bay, drew aside the veil, re-vealing the plaque on which thehistory of 140-year-old post Is in-scribed.

The plaque was erected by theprovincial department of tourismand information in associationwith the Sudbury and DistrictChamber of Commerce. Theplaque is among 40 being placedthroughout the province to com-memorate historic sites. A similarplaque near Murray Mine marksthe location of the original copper-nickel ore discovery in the NickelBelt in 1883.

The original site of the post wasabout two miles south of itspresent location, but when theCPR constructed its Algomabranch, the post was moved toMcNaughtonville (now Naughton),where it could send its furs byrail to company headquarters nearSault Ste. Marie.

Original post manager was Ed-ward McKay. One of the last resi-dents of the post was Thomas B.Ross. In 1881 he was postmaster.Hockey fans will remember his son,Art Ross, who was born at White-fish Lake in 1886. Art playedhockey with Kenoi'a Thistles, andin 1907 Kenora became the small-est community ever to sponsor aStanley Cup - winning team.

Of the one - time complex of sixbuildings at the Whitefish Lakepost, only two remain. The dwell-ing house was destroyed by fire in1926, and the stable and twosmaller outbuildings were de-molished about 10 years later. Thetrading store overlooks the high-way from its site on high ground.

A former men's bunkhouse stands50 yards to the rear. A substantialroot cellar, built of railway ties, isburied in the hill.

The property on which the postnow stands is owned by Mrs. R. H.Murray, of Sudbury and formerlyof Naughton. She has preventedthe post from being torn down bycontractors and land developers.She has also made provisions inher will so the land will be deededover to Waters township for itssafekeeping. The post stands inWaters township. Part of theproperty is in the adjoining town-ship of Graham.

The wording on the historic sitesplaque reads: The Hudson's BayCompany had established this postby 1824. Its main purpose was toprevent independent traders fromMichigan, Wisconsin and what isnow southern Ontario from gain-ing a foothold in the area northof the French River, and In this itwas reasonably successful. Origin-ally located two miles southwestof here on the west shore ofWhitefish Lake, the post was dis-mantled and moved to Naughtonin 1887 in order to be near therecently constructed AlgomaBranch of the Canadian PacificRailway. With the advent of thelumber industry and the develop-ment of mining, fur returnssteadily declined and in 1896 thepost was closed."

The initial stage of the shaft wascompleted to the 2200-level eleva-tion in August 1940 shortly aftera change of superintendents whichbrought Charlie Lively to Garson.

The engineering office was abusy place at this time as plansfor doubling Garson productionfrom the new shaft were under-way. Ore hoisting started atnumber 2 shaft in February 1942and production was more thandoubled to about 2400 tons per dayduring that year. Cut-and-fill andblasthole mining, which involvedthe mine engineering personnel toa much greater extent in actualproduction operations, was intro-duced during this period at Gar-

son as a diversion from the shrink-age method of mining.

In 1943, when Len Ennis hadtaken over from Charlie Lively assuperintendent, the initial square-set mining was introduced. By1944 George was engineering mineproduction that had tripled in theseven years since he had come toGarson and now involved shrink-age, blasthole, square-set and cut-and-fill mining methods.

Not the least of Georges ac-complishments during these waryears was adapting himself to workin close relationship with severalsuperintendents. In 1945 FosterTodd took over the reins as thefourth superintendent in eightyears that George had to 'breakin". This association lasted untilthe fall of 1952 when NormanWadge replaced Mr. Todd as super-intendent. Two years later, inOctober 1954, the present super-intendent, Bruce King, was callingupon the mine engineer once againfor the type of assistance and in-formation that is invaluable atsuch a time and that only the mineengineer is able to supply.

By this time the number 2 shafthad been deepened to its present4200 elevation and production hadincreased to near capacity produc-tion of 4500 tons per day. George's1937 engineering staff of three en-gineers and a sampler had expand-ed to some 20 men, which wasfairly indicative of the generalgrowth of the operation duringthis 17-year period.

He has beenprominently identified with theCompany's development of blast-hole mining, expansion of cut-and-fill mining with rock-bolting, steel-lined stope and pillar chutes, moreefficient muck handling equipment,and other significant improve-ments.

He especially wanted to see theintroduction of hydraulic fill atGarson before he left the scene.Instead of waiting for the naturalcourse of events he encouraged hisengineers and the operators to de-sign and get into operation ahome-made wet sand fill plantthat has served the mine very wellin a temporary capacity. HarveyJarrett, who takes over fromGeorge as mine engineer at Gar-son, was in charge of the designand engineering of this temporarysand plant.

Among George's favorite reminis-cences are his early days at Gar-son when the old number 1 shafton the hill" was the centre of

activity. The engineering officewas about the size of a one-cargarage, and accommodated thetwo mine geologists, Don Meredithand Jim Pass, as well as Georgeand his three engineers. The en-gineers would have to go under-ground in the morning and thegeologists after lunch so that eachgroup could get use of the singledrawing table.

Born at Guelph in 1903, son ofthe postmaster, George Sullivangraduated in mining engineeringfrom the University of Toronto in1925. He worked at Creightonmine during his summer vacationin 1923.

He joined the Inco engineeringstaff in 1928, working at Creightonand Levack and then at Frood,where as party leader he did muchof the surveying involved followingthe amalgamation of the two com-panies, in connecting up the un-derground workings between Inco3 shaft and Mond 4 shaft.
