A three-pump hydraulic system

reduces fuel consumption and

engine emissions by up to 15%.

Through the use of JCB’s innovative

Hydraulic Speed Control (HSC) system,

the operator can select the number of

hydraulic pumps in use, increasing tractive

effort when loading, and improving fine

control when grading and backfilling.

JCB’s EcoRoad locking torque

converter, power brakes and improved

driveline efficiency result in impressive

fuel savings of up to 25% and a significant

exhaust emission reduction. This leads

to a boost in productivity and a lower

environmental impact.

Innovation – efficiency

Innovation Innovation

The EcoDig system uses three hydraulic pumps rather than

two. This allows the same excavator performance even when

operating at lower engine speed.

• Up to 15% greater fuel economy when excavating

• Longer intervals between re-fuelling for better productivity

• Increased extra-dig speed without compromising flow to

other services

• Lower noise levels for improved operator comfort

• Up to 15% reduction in carbon emissions which minimise

environmental impact

EcoDig is now standard on manual and EasyControl machines,

allowing them to reach the high efficiency standards already set

by Advanced EasyControl machines due mainly to its variable

displacement pump and flow on demand system.

EcoLoad is a package of features and options to increase

productivity and maximise efficiency when loading.

• Transmission disconnect diverts hydraulic power to the loader

arms for faster lifting cycles

• Hydraulic Speed Control (HSC) disconnects the 1st hydraulic

pump to give more tractive effort when loading

• Return-To-Dig (RTD) automatically resets the shovel to the

dig position saving time and effort

• Limited Slip Differential (LSD) automatically provides additional

traction in challenging conditions

• JCB DIESELMAX engine provides high torque backup at low

rpm to maximise traction and pushing power

• Smooth Ride System (SRS) maximises load retention and

operator comfort at higher speeds both around site and on

the road

Innovation Innovation – POWER BRAKES

Continuing the theme of ‘Eco’, another package of features and

options – EcoRoad is designed to provide best efficiency and

productivity when on the road.

• TorqueLock reduces fuel consumption by up to 25% whilst

also reducing travel time by up to 10% or giving a chance to

extend working radius by up to 10%

• Hydraulic Speed Control (HSC) automatically disconnects the

1st hydraulic pump in 4th gear to reduce fuel consumption

• Power brakes gives full brake pad release to better maintain

roading speeds and contributes to a further 1% saving in fuel

• The complete JCB power train has been specifically designed

for our equipment, which ensures high efficiency and minimal

losses for best tractive effort and low fuel consumption

JCB’s already class-leading braking performance has now been

further enhanced by introducing power brakes and redesigning

the pedal position.

• Proportional braking throughout the pedal travel improving

braking effort and control

• New automotive pedal position for improved ergonomics and

operator comfort

• Full brake pad release for maintaining road speed and

improved fuel economy by 1%

• The design of power brakes also utilises the existing hydraulic

supply removing the need for a separate brake reservoir,

reducing operator costs and the number of daily service checks

The combination of EcoDig, EcoLoad, EcoRoad and Power Brakes

will provide customers with an average saving of up to 16%

when typical average duty cycles are taken into account.

How it works

Pump 3

(engine mounted)

Engine

View of transmission and pump from above.

Hydraulic oil tank Transmission

Pumps 1&2

(transmission mounted)

• Pumps 1 & 2 are mounted on the transmission (same as the

previous generation)

• Pump 3 mounts directly to the engine to provide additional

flow at lower rpm

• Optimum efficiency is achieved by setting the engine up to

1700rpm and moving the ‘ECO/LO’ switch to the ECO position

• The LCD in the instrument panel shows the hydraulic operating

mode (eco or std) and auxiliary flow setting (high or low)

Product Selling GuideProduct Selling Guide

1312

To benefit from maximum efficiency the operator needs to

select ‘ECO’ using the mode switch, and adjust the rpm between

idle-1700. Outside of these parameters the 3rd pump is not

functional and the machine reverts back to a 2 pump system.

Selected using the ‘ECO/LO’ switch. Lo mode was previously

known as HSC (Hydraulic Speed Control) – disconnects the 1st

pump and provides the following benefits:

• Further fuel savings when roading (automatically activates in

4th gear)

• Fine control of loader or excavator for precise operations such

as grading or lifting

• Increased tractive effort – more pushing power

• ECO/LO switch used for continuous operation, this can be

intermittently overridden by a button on the loader lever

JCB 3CX VS HIDROMEK 102B JCB 3CX VS VOLVO BL71B

• Noisy cab (78db compared to 73db on the JCB) and poor

ventilation results in a less comfortable operators environment

• Lower engine torque results in reduced pushing power when

loading and poor hill climb performance when roading

• Slow hydraulic cycle times results in lower productivity when

both loading and excavating

• Poor visibility to the front shovel makes loading difficult and

less safe compared to the JCB

• High fuel usage when roading – 22% more than the JCB even

without Torquelock

• Single ram loader design results in less breakout force and

non-parallel shovel levelling – poor load retention

• Lower cab restricts visibility when working at height and

minimises room for the operator

• Slow hydraulic cycle times results in lower productivity when

both loading and excavating

• Noisy cab (75db compared to 73db on the JCB) and fewer

misdirected air vents results in a less comfortable operators

environment

• Banana/unequal size boom and dipper prevents digging close

to the machine meaning the machine has to be repositioned

more regularly

Backhoe competitor comparison Backhoe competitor comparison

JCB 3CX VS CAT E SERIES JCB 3CX VS CASE 580 SN

• Very low ground clearance makes machine vulnerable to

damage and difficult to manoeuvre across arduous terrain

• Slow hydraulic cycle times across all excavator functions results

in lower productivity

• High bonnet line restricts visibility to the front of the machine

making loading difficult and less safe

• Poor roading ability due to poor transmission design and less

efficient CAT engine

• Banana/unequal size boom and dipper prevents digging close

to the machine meaning the machine has to be repositioned

more regularly

• High fuel consumption when excavating significantly increases

running costs ≈ 5 L/h more than the JCB

• Very narrow and low cab restricts visibility and room for

the operator

• Twin gear pump requires much higher engine rpm to deliver

the same hydraulic flow as the JCB triple pump system

• Excavator design is very heavy making the machine less stable

when operating at the side of the machine

• Loader arms have to be raised to perform daily checks and

not all check are on the same side of the machine

• Poor hose routing on whole machine makes the hydraulic

system susceptible to damage:

- Excavator arm hoses have excessive lengths and are

mounted on the outside of the boom and dipper

- Excavator hoses rub on chassis when side shifting

- Loader arm hoses perish due to tight bends

JCB 3CX VS KOMATSU WB97 R JCB 3CX VS JOHN DEERE SJ SERIES

• Komatsu hydraulic system appears to be slow even when the

high speed hydraulics are engaged

• Non-Komatsu power train integrated into the machine results

in poor performance and serviceability

• Generally lightweight construction, frame and chassis look to

be deficient in metal where it counts. Confirmed with in field

training as machine feels light on its wheels especially in the

front end

• Operator environment is very tight and narrow. Cab feels

cramped and very poor ergonomically

• Front loader arms are of an odd design with exceptionally long

bucket cylinders – appears a compromised design

• Sideshift model is simply a modified centremount chassis –

non-intentional design resulting in poor stability

• Antiquated front end loader geometry – single crowd/dump

ram with mechanical compensation resulting in less breakout

force and non parallel shovel levelling

• Serviceability very poor – hydraulic tank sandwiched between

engine and front of cabin making for poor access and excessive

heat build up

• Very narrow cab never intended for rear servo controls

severely compromises operator comfort

• Three-piece rear window hinders rearward vision
