Photography as a Business – Part 1

Jeff Roush – Education Director, CCCT

Qualifications- A little bit of photo talent and some decent photo gear are the requirements that most feel are the important components in making a successful photography business. And this is all that some have. However, this is not enough. The ingredients to the success of a photo business have to include a few more things. One is the relentless desire to create photographic art. This has to be your photographic art. Along with this, you need to have the drive to make your photographic art the absolute best you can make it; making it exceptional. The motivation to make it better and different from others is the dividing line between photographers that do ok and photographers that rise to the top as photographic artists. To get to the point where you want to move into a professional arena takes a lot of confidence, confidence in your work, your abilities, and your talent. When you reach this point of confidence, you have arrived at a very important plateau in your photographic journey. Your technical ability and your artistic ability have both reached a level where you are proud of the work that you produce and are willing to put it out there to the public – out there where there is always a critic, always someone seemingly better, and usually, someone who voices your shortcomings. This resistance is part of doing what we do, and learning to deal with it only makes us better. Your confidence is strong, and your belief in your work is stronger. "Photographic Excellence" is never fully reached, but it is always out there as a goal to every serious photographic artist. Even those that have been shooting for many years, including myself, still learn each time we go out to shoot. So, in many ways, we all still struggle to reach a higher level of excellence, a higher plateau, and move further up the skill level. Keep striving, keep learning, and keep creating. Below is an outline of some of the necessary topics to consider and "things to do" when you are ready to move to the "big time" and start a legitimate photography business. Starting a Business- First and foremost, create a short and "to the point" business plan for yourself. Where do you want to be in one month, three months, six months, one year, five years? This will help you focus on what you need to do to reach your goal. This is only for you to use. Your business plan should be simple, concise, and to the point. For example: "I want to add three new portraits (paying or free) to my portfolio every month." "I want to finish my website in two months." "I want to find five paying customers every month for the next six months." "I want to buy a new 200mm lens in 6 months." These are just examples, and some of us already think about this stuff, but we haven't put it writing where we can read it regularly and then make judgments about it if to see if we are truly working towards those goals. And, how do you find portraits to shoot when you are just starting?

Page 3: 3CT In Focus · If you've ever printed images before, you probably noticed that an 8 x 10 usually crops from the original image. That's due to aspect ratio. The aspect ratio is simply

3

Double-check your gear against your peers; make sure your stuff will allow you to operate at the level you have in your goals. The quality (cost) of your gear changes as you progress up the ladder. It is possible to be held back by the shortcomings of your photographic gear. Stepping up to the "professional plate" can be expensive. COMMON PHOTOGRAPHY TERMS THAT ALL BEGINNER

PHOTOGRAPHERS NEED TO KNOW

Part 1 of 3

For a lot of folks, learning how to use a digital camera successfully seems like a tough task, especially when you're faced with

all kinds of camera techie names that leave you in the dark and wishing for a dictionary of photographic terms.

Understanding the most commonly used photography terms, definitions, and lingo is the first giant step to helping you

through the beginning stage and a step toward better images.

While there are hundreds of photography terms, this series will be the basic 25 terms that should be your first step to learning

the basics of photography.

1. Aperture

This is the first common photography term you should learn. Simply put, the aperture is the size of the opening

in the lens. Think of the lens as a window—large windows or wide angles let in more light, while small

windows let in less light. A wide-open aperture will let more light into the image for a brighter photo, while a

smaller aperture lets in less light. Aperture is measured in f-stops; a small f-stop like f/1.8 is a wide opening, a

large f-stop like f/22 is a very narrow one. Aperture is one of three camera settings that determine an image's

exposure, or how light or dark it is. Aperture also affects how much of the image is in focus—wide apertures

result in that creamy, unfocused background while narrow apertures keep more of the image sharp.

2. Aspect Ratio

If you've ever printed images before, you probably noticed that an 8 x 10 usually crops from the original image.

That's due to aspect ratio. The aspect ratio is simply the ratio of the height to width. An 8 x 10 has an equal

aspect ratio to a 4 x 5, but a 4 x 7 image is a bit wider. You can change the aspect ratio in your camera if you

know how you'd like to print your image, or you can crop your photo when you edit it to the right ratio.

3. Bokeh

Bokeh is the orbs created when lights are out of focus in an image. It's a neat effect to have in the background of

a photo, created through wide apertures. It will have an interesting effect on your image quality.

Page 5: 3CT In Focus · If you've ever printed images before, you probably noticed that an 8 x 10 usually crops from the original image. That's due to aspect ratio. The aspect ratio is simply

5

4. Burst Mode

You can take photos one at a time. Or, you can turn the burst mode on, and the camera will continue snapping

photos as long as you hold the button down, or until the buffer is full (which is a fancy way of saying the

camera can't process anymore). Burst speeds differ based on what camera or film camera you own; some are

faster than others. Just how fast is written in "fps" or frames (pictures) per second. This will give you a wide

selection of which close-up you'll ultimately select of your dog!

5. Depth of Field

Depth of field is a photography term that refers to how much of the image is in focus. The camera will focus on one distance, but there's a range of distance in front and behind that point that stays sharp—that's the depth of field. Portraits often have a soft, unfocused background—this is a shallow depth of field. Landscapes, on the other hand, often have more of the image in focus—this is a large depth of field, with a big range of distance that stays sharp.

6. Digital vs. Optical

Digital and optical are important terms to understand when shopping for a new camera. Digital means the

effect is achieved through software, not physical parts of the camera. Optical is always better than digital.

These terms are usually used when referring to a zoom lens (on a compact camera) as well as image

stabilization.

7. Exposure

Exposure is how light or dark an image is. An image is created when the camera sensor (or film strip) is exposed to light—that's where the term originates. A dark photo is considered underexposed, or it wasn't exposed to enough light; a light photo is overexposed or exposed to too much light. Exposure is controlled through the aperture, shutter speed, and ISO.

Memphis Camera Club February 2020

https://www.memphiscameraclub.com The Memphis Camera Club held its monthly competition on February 6. The Digital Image of the Month was "Very Happy Hummer" by Allen Sparks. The Print Image of the Month was "Yellow Blossoms" by Rick Barnard. The next competition will be held on March 5 and April 2. Dr. Tom Fox was the program speaker on February 20, 2020. Tom Fox has been a long-time member of the Memphis Camera Club since the early 1990s. He has traveled extensively and presented many instructional / inspirational photographic programs. He came to Memphis to pursue a medical career but ultimately decided to leave medicine and follow his passion in the art of photography. As a professional photographer, he strives to exemplify the unparalleled beauty of our natural world with his images. He has co-authored the best-selling books, “The Wonder of It All” and “The Nature of Hope,” which combine majestic images with inspirational insights. Most recently, he completed the photography for “The Nature of Excellence” – a beautiful coffee table book illustrating the attributes of excellence with photographs of nature. His program on February 20, Exploring the Wind River Range in Pursuit of Excellence takes viewers into a lesser known photographic region of our country - with towering granite peaks and valleys laced with beautiful lakes and wildflowers. For Tom, photography is an outward expression of an inward devotion, a visual reference for spiritual reflection, that he hopes will be an inspiration and encouragement to all of us. On March 12, Allen Sparks will present a program on photographing our smallest avian subject, the hummingbird. Topics will include shooting in various conditions such as natural light, single flash, and multiple flash set ups. Additionally, our year-end winners will have a showing of their works at a March 13 reception.
