Security: DefendingData and ResourcesThe LinkBuilder FMS II hubs and theEthernet modules in the LinkBuilder MSHsupport 3Com’s LAN Security Architecture(LSA), making them highly effective toolsfor safeguarding valuable data and com-puting resources. A patented, chip-basedsystem, LSA provides the following power-ful security features:

• Need to Know protects sensitive dataon the network by checking destinationaddresses on each packet and sendingreadable packets only to authorizednodes.

• Disconnect Unauthorized Device auto-matically records and/or disables anunauthorized device attempting to logon to the network.

• Audit Log gives the manager a complete record of user and devicechanges on the network.

• Multiple User Levels ensure that onlyauthorized users have access to critical network functions.

• Passwords can be used to identify network managers.

Stand-alone encryption systems that pro-vide the same protection are expensiveand relatively difficult to implement, andcan adversely affect network performance.

Solution 1: Managed Ethernet Connectivity

Solution 2: Managed Token Ring Connectivity

HighlightsThe LinkBuilder MSH Token Ringmodules provide an array of TokenRing physical layer resilience fea-tures unmatched in the industry.Phase-Locked Loop (PLL) per-portretiming, Zero Delay Lockout (ZDL),and jitter reduction ensure a cleansignal and prevent beaconing nodes. These features ensure greater relia-bility across Token Ring networks, support more devices over greaterdistances, and ensure that devices donot interrupt the network by insert-ing into the ring at the wrong speed.

This solution exploits theLinkBuilder MSH hub’s ability tohandle multiple Token Ring pathsrunning at 4 or 16 Mbps. The addi-tion of a second RingBuilder™

module allows the MAUs to bedivided into two Token Rings. TheLocal Token Ring Bridge moduleprovides fully integrated bridgingbetween those rings—in this case, between a 4 Mbps ring and the 16 Mbps imaging system ring.

HighlightsThis solution uses LinkBuilder MSHhubs and LinkBuilder FMS II stack-able hubs in the wiring closets linkedto two central LANplex® 6004switches. The fiber optic backbonealso provides inherent resilience andimmunity from noise.

To protect the mission-criticalapplications, each LinkBuilder MSHhub has a connection to each of theLANplex switching hubs. One con-nection is designated the primary link, while the other functions as a backup.(Up to 16 Ethernet resilient link pairscan be configured on a LinkBuilderMSH hub.) The primary and second-ary links are connected to separate

modules in the LinkBuilder MSH hubsto protect the network against the fail-ure of a single component.

The LinkBuilder MSH has otherresiliency features as well. DistributedRepeater Architecture provides eachEthernet module with its own repeater,so a failure in one module cannotbring down the others. And redundantpower supplies provide additionalprotection. If one power supply fails, the other takes over and an alert issent to the management station.

LinkBuilder MSH ConfigurationRequirements

Install a new structured cablingsystem in a multi-floor build-ing using a fiber backbone andUTP floor wiring. The newconfiguration replaces a thickEthernet backbone and thinEthernet floor wiring. Newhubs are needed in the wiringclosets on the floors and in adata center. On some floors, space considerations dictatethe use of compact, stackablehubs. This network will runmission-critical applications.

HighlightsFor smaller workgroups, or wherespace is a concern, LinkBuilderFMS II stackable hubs with theBridge Management Module usingSpanning Tree Algorithm (STA)can provide redundant paths to theLANplex switching hubs in thedata center.

A Redundant Power Systemensures constant power for up tofour SuperStack units. AdditionalRedundant Power Systems can beadded if required. The system com-prises two load-sharing bulk powersupplies fed by two independent AClines. In the event of a failure in oneof the supplies, an alarm is automati-

cally sent to the management con-sole. The system also has redundantfans and LED temperature indicatorsto protect against failures caused byoverheating.

Management Module

Highlights 3Com’s chassis-based LinkBuilderMSH solution provides the highdegree of segmentation required bythis organization. The LinkBuilderMSH 4-Port Ethernet Bridge Modulebridges the LAN segments across thehub’s three backplanes, effectivelytripling the total network bandwidthfrom 10 Mbps to 30 Mbps. Thebridge module supports SpanningTree Algorithm (STA), adding to the resiliency of the hub.

The LinkBuilder MSH bridgemodule has extensive filtering capa-bilities, which help control networktraffic by isolating protocols andensuring that network segments areonly accessible by selected users.3Com’s patented LAN Security

Architecture (LSA) providesadvanced security features like Needto Know, which ensures that onlyauthorized users receive sensitivedata, and Disconnect UnauthorizedDevice, which can automaticallydeny access to network intruders.

Traffic among users within thesame segment is filtered by thebridge module, keeping unnecessarytraffic off the rest of the network. With Transcend network managementsoftware, you can configure the entirenetwork from a single hub view, evenmoving modules from one segment toanother via software.

The ST Fiber Optic TransceiverInterface module plugs into the bridgemodule to provide connection withthe fiber optic building backbone. The LinkBuilder MSH also providesthe same level of segmentation in acoax, fiber, RJ-45, or mixed mediaenvironment.

Large Ethernet NetworkRequirements

Subdivide a large Ethernetnetwork to cope with high traf-fic levels that are adverselyaffecting performance. Providesafeguards against unautho-rized network access.

Relocate a computer-aideddesign (CAD) departmentrequiring two separate networksegments to the same floor as adepartment running NetWare.LAN traffic on all three net-works must remain separate, while still allowing for inter-connections between the depart-ments and the fiber backbone.

Provide a cost-effective LANextension with full segmenta-tion capabilities. Connect asmall segment of users to theexisting network.

LinkBuilder Hub Configuration Guide 11

Highlights3Com’s stackable Ethernet hubs canprovide a cost-effective network addi-tion with full segmentation capabili-ties and the benefits of 3Com’s LANSecurity Architecture. This solution isalso an option for a smaller networkwhere cost is a concern.

The slide-in LinkBuilder FMS IIBridge Management Module lets yousegment the network, manage bothhub and bridge operations, and runSpanning Tree Algorithm (STA) forredundant links. It features a fullIEEE 802.1d transparent bridge com-plete with a 1024-address filteringdatabase.

If all you need is low-cost, simplebridging without sophisticated man-agement capabilities, the LinkBuilderBridge MicroModule is the idealalternative. Just slide this unmanagedlocal bridge into the transceiver inter-face module slot of a LinkBuilderFMS II hub.

With either option, you get dramatic improvements in networkperformance without the need topurchase dedicated local bridges oneach floor.

Solution 5:LAN Switching and High-Speed Connectivity

HighlightsWith powerful connectivity andswitching modules, the LinkBuilderMSH hub can provide high-speedFDDI floor concentration, as well as floor-based switching betweenEthernet and FDDI LANs. High-performance users get FDDI connec-tions from the hub, while other userskeep their Ethernet links.

The FDDI RingBuilder modulecreates an FDDI ring from multipleFDDI fiber-optic concentrator mod-ules within the LinkBuilder MSH hub.FDDI-attached servers offer signifi-cant improvement in file access overEthernet server connections in high-bandwidth application environments.

The LinkSwitch 1200 module and the LinkSwitch 1200 expansionmodule provide full-speed switchingbetween up to nine Ethernet segmentsand FDDI. The LinkSwitch 1200module can connect to one of the

internal FDDI backplanes, or accom-modate 1 or 2 FDDI fiber MIC mediamodules for external single-attached,dual-attached, or dual-homed con-nections to the FDDI ring. The dualhoming feature provides additionalresilience by preventing the FDDIring from fragmenting if multipledevices fail simultaneously.

LinkBuilder MSH

LinkBuilder MSH is a multi-serviceshub that can support up to 10 man-aged Ethernet, 5 managed Token Ring,or 3 managed FDDI workgroups overdiverse media types.

The LinkBuilder MSH offers out-standing reliability and fault tolerance. Each Ethernet connectivity modulehas its own repeater, so a failure in onemodule can’t bring down the others.Automatic resilient links ensure relia-bility and maximize uptime, and allconnectivity modules and powersupplies are hot-swappable, includ-ing fans.

The Ethernet bridge module provides the hub with affordable segmentation to boost performanceon the floor. For high-speed floorconnectivity, FDDI concentratormodules support FDDI using MICconnectors and CDDI using RJ-45connectors. FDDI RingBuilder mod-ules build a single FDDI ring frommultiple FDDI concentrator modules.

In Token Ring LANs, theLinkBuilder MSH features Phase-Locked Loop retiming for reliable sig-nals over larger rings, and Zero DelayLockout and Advanced DistributedRecovery Intelligence to isolate faultystations from the network.

The LinkBuilder MSH hubincludes integrated support forEthernet RMON network manage-ment. RMON agents and ASICs oneach connectivity module collect andcompile RMON data, providing pow-erful monitoring capabilities for everysegment on the network. BecauseRMON intelligence is integrated intothe connectivity modules, RMONfunctionality scales easily as yournetwork grows. An RMON module is also available for Token Ring.

A single management modulemanages the entire multi-technologyhub. Using 3Com’s Distributed

Management Architecture, manage-ment functions are shared between themanagement module and SmartAgentmanagement agents in the connectiv-ity modules.

The hub’s unique, high-speed pas-sive bus can support up to 17 separateservices at data rates up to 155 Mbpseach. This technology-independent buswill also handle 100 Mbps Ethernetand Asynchronous Transfer Mode(ATM) in the future, without the needto upgrade the chassis or backplane.

The LinkBuilder MSH does offer a full range of workgroup switchingoptions. The LinkSwitch 1200Ethernet-to-FDDI switching moduleis available now, letting you placeservers on an FDDI ring while usersremain in Ethernet workgroups on the floor. Switching modules arealso planned for Ethernet-to-ATM,100BASE-T Fast Ethernet, and TokenRing connectivity.

During 1995, 3Com will announce a broadrange of Token Ring scalable switchingproducts for chassis and stackable con-figurations. The switching architectureis based on the Token Ring SwitchingEngine (TRSE) ASIC, the latest leading-edge integrated chip that enables 3Com to drive switching to new price/performance levels.

Like the ISE-chip for the high-speedEthernet/FDDI LANplex switch productline, the TRSE integrates advancedswitching functionality onto hardware for a low-cost, high-speed switch solu-tion. The resulting Token Ring switchingarchitecture features cut-through andstore-and-forward switching, sourceroute and transparent bridging, 802.1dand IBM® Spanning Tree support, flexiblevirtual network configuration, and amigration path to FDDI/ATM.

Intelligent Switches

3Com switches enhance your net-work’s performance by creating“microsegments” that are intercon-nected using a high-speed switchingmatrix. Microsegmenting means thata switched node doesn’t share band-width with other nodes, even whenthey share the same port—whichtranslates to dramatic increases inperformance.

3Com leads the industry in breadthof switching offerings with a total ofthree product families: LinkSwitch,

LANplex, and CELLplex™. Thisbroad choice of options ensures thatyou’ll get precisely the switchingfunctionality you need.

Network technologies currentlysupported by 3Com switches includeEthernet, 100BASE-T Fast Ethernet,Fiber Distributed Data Interface(FDDI), and Asynchronous TransferMode (ATM). Support for TokenRing switching is also planned.

And you can manage every 3Comswitch with 3Com’s Transcend inte-grated management applications.

3Com’s LinkSwitch switchesmake performance enhancementseasy at the workgroup level withstackable convenience and plug-and-play simplicity. The LinkSwitchfamily also lets you extend high-speed FDDI, Fast Ethernet, or ATMpipes from Ethernet workgroups to aserver, eliminating desktop-to-serverbottlenecks.

The LANplex family ofworkgroup/departmental and datacenter switches provides peak per-formance and modular, scalable connections for Ethernet and FDDInetworks. And the CELLplex familyuses powerful, state-of-the-art cellswitching technology to deliver low-latency, high-throughput ATM performance on the backbone or inbandwidth-constrained departments.

3Com switches are powered bycustom-designed switching enginesbased on sophisticated application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs).These highly integrated ASICs make switching fast, simple, and economical. They also contribute to a fault-tolerant architecture you can trust with your mission-critical applications.
