 Oklahoma ews  Giselle Baclig June 30, 1968 Let’s Get Ready to Rumble by: Giselle Baclig  For a while the re has bee n a gro win g riv al   between the socs and greasers, but the killing  Bob Sheldon, a good friend of many socs, fina  crossed the line. In the middle of town where t  East and Wes t side colli ded , was the vac ant l  where the Rumble between the two groups to   place. The rumble took place on June 27, a Frid  night, at seven pm. Rules of the fight was hand-to-hand combat on  no knives or heat ers, and first to run surr ende  The socs who came to fight came in four carloa  There were 20 greasers and 22 socs at the rumbl  Th e nu mb er s we re as even as it co ul d g  Ponyboy Curtis said, “they lined up silently, fa  us, and we lined up facing them.” Darrel Cur  Curtis’s oldest brother, stepped up and said ‘I’  take on anyone.’ Paul Holden, a husky blond g  stepped up into the light and said “I’ll take you.” WANT A CORVETTE? BUY ONE AT CHEVROLET Holden and Curtis’s brother, Darry, used to b  good buddies in high school. They circl ed ea  other counterclockwise, eyeing each other, sizi  each other up, wond erin g if old faults were s  th er e. Wh il e th e bo ys were si zi ng up th  opponent, a familiar voice broke the heavy silen  It yelled, “Hold up! Hold it!” Curti s (Ol de  turned to look, and that’s when Paul swung. Cur sai d, “I was stan din g next to my other bro th  Soda, Steve, and Two-Bit when Dallas Winsto  came to join us. The rumble was on. Curtis said  coul dn’t fi nd a soc my size, so I took on t  next-best size and jumped him. Ever yo ne was sl ug ging it out, fi gh ti ng  oppo nent. Curt is (Old est) said, “I like taking  two guys at once at a rumble . I loo k after   brothers, Ponyboy and Soda, they can hold up o  their own pretty well, I just do it so they don’t  too roughed up.” Curtis got a pretty good sluggi  while he was helping out Winston. He got a ki  to the he ad, which ca us ed him to ge t a sl ig  conc us si on. A soc ki cked hi m an d hi s ol d   brother, Sodapop Curtis saw what happene d an  got pissed. That was when the Socs ran back t  their cars, surrendering. The Greasers yelled a  who oped, celeb rat ing the ir vic tor y. Two -B  Mathews said, “they were all running back to th  cars like a bunch of wusses.” Curtis recalled bei  a bit woozy after the fight . Afterwa rds, Winst  and Curtis rushed to the hospital to see their frie  Johnny Cade, who was dying after receiving 3  degree burns and a broken back after a fire rescu  he did in Windrixville. to the head, which caused him to get a slig 

concussion. A soc kicked him and his old 

 brother, Sodapop Curtis saw what happened an 

got pissed. That was when the Socs ran back t their cars, surrendering. The Greasers yelled a 

whooped, celebrating their victory. Two-B
