SHAL Monthly Report November 2016 1 Southernmost Homeless Assistance League, Inc. P.O. Box 2990, Key West, FL 33045-2990 • www.shalkw.org John Miller, Executive Director Patrice Pelletier-Sanders, Chair 502-876-5092 • [email protected] Christine Trovato, Vice Chair Tiffany Curry, Secretary Elicia Pintabona, Outreach Director Richard Casey, Jr. Treasurer Mike Tolbert, Shelter Director Alan Teitelbaum, Past Chair SHAL Monthly Report November 2016 SHAL News SHAL Seeking Donations For Bus Tickets SHAL is asking for community support for its popular reunification program this holiday season. SHAL works directly with each person experiencing homelessness individually to address each person’s particular issues. Most homeless persons have been affected by external issues including health & mental health, employment, domestic violence, family break up and substance abuse and need a hand up to resume a permanently housed, self- sufficient life. But the Keys can be a tough place to make ends meet due to the high costs of housing & living and low wages for unskilled workers. Sometimes a person’s best option is to relocate “back home” where family, friends, housing and employment can more easily add up to self-sufficiency. Until very recently, SHAL had a voluntary “bus ticket” program that had successfully purchased over 350 tickets for homeless persons to get them to a location on the mainland where they can again afford housing and life’s essentials. (Clients voluntarily agree not to return to Monroe County.) This holiday season, we are asking for donations to reinstitute this program. Please visit www.shalkw.org to make an online donation or send a check to SHAL at PO Box 2990, Key West FL 33045. Include on your check memo line or the online form “bus ticket” and we will use your gift exclusively for reuniting homeless persons, hopefully before the end of the year. Please contact Executive Director John Miller at [email protected] if you need more information. SHAL Serves Thanksgiving Dinner at the Shelter The SHAL staff gave the hard working volunteers at the Soup Kitchen a rare day off on Thanksgiving and prepared a full spread of turkey, side dishes and all the trimmings to our homeless clients. 10 turkeys were donated through St. Mary’s, while several others came from local restaurants along with side dishes. SHAL Shelter Director Mike Tolbert and Relief Manager Jinne Figueroa worked several very long days to make it a very special evening at the Shelter. (see pictures below) It is difficult for a person to escape homelessness if they are tired, hungry, sick or have no income SOUTHERNMOST HOMELESS ASSISTANCE LEAGUE RELOCATION PROGRAM The Keys can be a tough place to make ends meet. Housing costs are legendary and often wages for unskilled workers, combined with other living expenses, just don’t add up. Maintaining a place to live while working in the service or other local industr ies can require multiple jobs and very long hours and often housing is the first casualty of an unbalanced budget. Other problems like substance abuse, health issues and business & legal issues frequently come into play. Many times SHAL Case Managers find, a s we work through the challenges of each homeless person that sometimes the best option i s to relocate “back home” where family, friends, housing, support and employment can more easily add up to self -sufficiency. Until very recently, SHAL had a voluntary “bus ticket” program that had successfully purchased over 350 tickets for homeless people to get them to a location on the mainland where they can again afford housing and life’s essentials. (Clients voluntarily agree not to return to Monroe County.) For several years now SHAL is the only agency providing this service to our clients, with many referrals from other homeless services providers in our community. Because of a funding cut, we were recently forced to suspend this highly successful and cost effective program. We are asking our community to support the resumption of our reloc ation program . We hope to raise $20 ,000 to help 100 to 150 homeless people find a better setting and improve their lives. Your donation is a good investment in their well -being and in our community. Please consider supporting this project and helping to reunify a homeless person with the support of the ir famil y, friends and opportunities on the mainland , while improving the quality of life for all our residents. Please send a check to SHAL at PO Box 2990, Key West FL 33045 or visit www .shalkw.org to mak e your gift online . Be sure to indicate if you would like your donation to be anonymous. SHAL is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization and your contribution may be tax deductible. 100% of your donation will go toward bus tickets . Thank you in advance for your support, & best wishes to you and your family this holiday season. John Miller SHAL Executive Director

HomelessMyth#6(of7)“They don’t have the daily living skills to have an apartment.”

Even chronic homeless individuals have the living skills and experiences to quickly resume a regular lifestyle in permanent housing. Some skills, habits and coping mechanisms learned during longer periods of homelessness may take a short time to fall away, but the advantages of permanent housing vastly outweigh the difficulty of life on the street.

It is important to remember that nearly all homeless persons were permanently housed in the very recent past.
