Closing Remarks

Alexander Josephite

Having been installed as international president of ISACA® only a few weeks ago, it is a special pleasure to begin my term on such a high note: congratulating the New York Metropolitan Chapter as it celebrates its Annual Meeting and Awards Night. I regret that I won’t have the opportunity to share the evening with you in person, as the demands of traveling from Australia simply will not allow. However, I have certainly been aware of this event for as long as I have been active at the international level and I have applauded the fact that the chapter takes time each year to celebrate itself—something we could all perhaps do more often!

Crowning the event, of course, is the presentation of the prestigious Joseph J. Wasserman Memorial Award, which recognizes outstanding achievement in the field of information systems auditing. I stand in awe of the list of distinguished individuals who have been presented the Wasserman Award over time, each displaying the special blend of characteristics intrinsic to the award’s namesake.

This year’s recipient is no exception. If we could capture and bottle Rob’s drive and enthusiasm for everything he does, we would solve a lot of the world’s energy issues. His job title contains the word “evangelist” in it, and I cannot imagine anyone who could wear that title more appropriately. He represents both CA and ISACA® with professionalism and a positive outlook. He seems tireless in his willingness to speak to the things about which he is passionate: his company’s excellence, his firm grasp on emerging business and technology trends, his beliefs on governance of enterprise IT, and his support of ISACA®. And he backs up the talk with action: his list of ISACA® positions held is seemingly endless, and he is always interested in doing more. His service on the Board of Directors and the Strategic Advisory Council are just the tip of the iceberg of his ISACA® contributions. At the moment he is chairing the ISO Liaison Subcommittee. We are extremely invested in raising our profile in that organization and creating a positive influence for the benefit of our members. It speaks volumes that, for such an important job, we wanted Rob at the helm.

ISACA® is fortunate to enjoy the support of visionary leaders such as Rob Stroud and the commitment of members such as those in the New York Metropolitan Chapter. Congratulations, Rob, and thanks to the chapter for allowing ISACA® to share in this auspicious occasion.

Sincerely,

Tony Hayes, CGEIT, AFCHSE, CHE, FACS, FCPA, FIIA 2013-2014 International President ISACA® and IT Governance Institute

2011-2013 Chapter President

Dear Friends and Colleagues:

Welcome to our Annual Gala - our most cherished event of the year. It's where we get to honor our Wasserman Award recipient, welcome the new Board of Directors and celebrate what has been a remarkable year.

This will be the last time I address you as the chapter's President - as my term ends this month. Over the last two years, I have seen enormous change happen through the dedicated efforts of our Board, and the feedback and participation of our membership. We have grown to be the largest chapter in North America - a goal we set for ourselves nearly seven years ago. Along the way, we've won awards for our website, given out more CPE credits than any chapter in the world, have taught our certification classes on a global level, and have more than doubled our operating income. As gratifying as these accomplishments are, the most memorable, and valuable thing that I'll always treasure was the ability to work with a fine group of people, our chapter's Board of Directors, who were all dedicated to improving our chapter, pushing the envelope of our accomplishments, and always keeping member value in mind.

And, as much as the changes that occurred with our chapter, I've also emerged a better person, consultant and leader from spending my time as the New York Chapter's President. No, it wasn't easy, nor should it be. But all along the way I can honestly tell you that I enjoyed every minute of it. There's something special about being part of a great organization that strives to help others and promote our field of practice. I was very fortunate indeed, and I want to sincerely thank you for giving me this opportunity.

Looking ahead, there are even greater things on the horizon. The chapter is posed to set new heights, and I'm looking forward to seeing the great plans our new board will be implementing.

So for now, I will bid you all "farewell" and I'll look forward to seeing you at a future ISACA® event. I wish you all the best of luck in your careers and wherever life takes you. I hope that your membership somehow, some way, leads you to fulfill your own personal and career goals.

Sincerely,

Jim Ambrosini

Chapter President

2013—2015 Chapter President

Many of you have noticed that over the past decade the Chapter has transformed to better serve the needs of our membership. The need to keep pace with technological advances has never been stronger, and we are all working diligently to deliver the information and resources you need when you want it.

I am very excited to take the helm and help the Board keep the momentum going. As we continue to grow in number, our volunteer base has never been stronger, and

we'll need every one of you to make this Chapter not only the largest Chapter in North America, but the Best.

See you out there,

Alexander Josephite Incoming Chapter President

Joseph J. Wasserman

(1932-1978)

Joe Wasserman was born in New Haven, Connecticut on May 21, 1932, a depression-born Connecticut Yankee. Upon completion of US Navy active duty in 1956, Joe was employed as an internal auditor with the Southern New England Bell Telephone Company in New Haven. There he established the company’s first IS Audit function and developed such concepts as the integrated test facility, the tagging of data and the use of audit software.

By 1965, Joe had advanced to Audit Manager at AT&T’s New York Headquarters, having responsibility for the audit of Bell Systems in the US and Canada. In 1967, Joe moved to AT&T’s Bell labs as manager of Audit R&D. In 1969, together with Dick Hirschfield, he founded Computer Audit Systems, Inc. (CAS). They developed the Computer Audit Retrieval System (CARS) and produced seminars in computer auditing including applications of the CARS software. At the time, the only publicized computer audit software was Auditape available from Haskins and Sells. Both systems generated COBOL programs on IBM mainframes using punched card control parameters.

Joe had placed CARS in over 400 computer centers and his marketing had reached the boardrooms of the Fortune 1000 and the partners of the largest public accounting firms. His professional competence and energy earned him the respect and friendship of many. Joe continued in a consulting capacity, including serving as an expert in the Equity Funding case, until his untimely death in 1978.

Memories of Joe… Thoughts on the Wasserman Award

Joe Wasserman (no one ever called him Joseph) was the sort of friend you see at many conferences, dine with, share a drink and swap stories, but never get to know on a personal basis. You see pictures of the wife and the kids but the connection is mainly professional. Such was the way I got to know Joe.

With his neatly trimmed beard and well-pressed suits (we all wore suits in those days); Joe was a fixture at all the major EDP Auditing (as we were in those days) and Information Security conferences. He had earned the right to speak at these events. Joe was a pioneer in IS Auditing, having recognized the risk and control relevance of computer systems when they themselves were in their infancy.

Most notably, Joe was perhaps the first to use the computer to audit data maintained in electronic form. He was certainly among the first to offer such software on a commercial basis. For these reasons alone he would be a suitable person to honor with an award in his name. But why should such an award come from ISACA®’s New York chapter?

In the earliest days, EDPAA (as it was in those days) was struggling to get established. The New York chapter was just formed in 1975 and it was Joe’s company that sponsored the initial meeting. I joined shortly afterward and was Secretary when John Gatto was President. Joe was never an officer or a Board Member. He would just come to meetings with John and myself and plan the entire year’s worth of programs. I remember him well, leaning back in his chair, saying “We’ll get John Doe for the September meeting. Don’t worry, I’ll call him. And for October, we’ll have Mary Roe; I know her; she’ll speak.” And so on for the other months until the chapter year was taken care of. He knew everyone. We were lucky; we knew Joe.

And then Joe died, in his sleep, very young. Like everyone in the profession, John Gatto and I were shocked. We’d lost a friend and our entire Program Committee at the same time! And we knew that we had to do something to honor his memory, and so the Joseph J. Wasserman Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Field of Information Systems Auditing was born, along with a gala dinner to present it. Adrienne Wasserman, his widow, presented the first award to Don Adams of the AICPA.

I was fortunate enough to receive the award myself ten years later. I’d prefer to have had it named after someone else and still be able to laugh and joke with Joe.

Recipient Selection Process

of the

Joseph J. Wasserman Award

The Joseph J. Wasserman Award is given annually by the ISACA® New

York Metropolitan Chapter at their Annual Gala, normally held in New

York City during June or July, when the new Board of Directors is

officially installed.

The award is presented in recognition of the candidate’s “Outstanding

Achievement and Contribution to the Field of Information Systems

Audit, Control and Security.”

Each year, an announcement is made on the Chapter website inviting

any Chapter member to recommend a candidate and provide a short

bio and reasons why the person is eligible for consideration.

The Wasserman Committee, consisting of previous Wasserman

Recipients who are joined by former International and Chapter

Presidents, meet to consider and recommend a list of candidates to

the Chapter Board of Directors. This year, for the first time,

participants in the selection process had the choice of submitting their

recommendations online, or in physical form, across a one week

period and this process included feedback from the Board of Directors.

The Board of Directors considered the recommendations provided by

the Wasserman Committee and took a vote to confirm the recipient of

the award.
