CONGRESS THEME

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT, ENVIRONMENTAL VULNERABILITY, AND GEOSPATIAL TECHNOLOGY

Specific issues and challenges are appropriate to address in this context:

PANEL DISCUSSION THEMES

MEMORIAL LECTURE

TECHNICAL SESSIONS

PROF. N.P. AYYAR YOUNG GEOGRAPHERS AWARD SCHEME

Demographic growth, economic development and over-exploitation of natural resources lead to complex problems to societies. This theme is most appropriate in the present context when the resources are beginning to become scare as a result of over exploitation due to increasing demands. There is a need therefore for a sustainable exploitation of resources. Sustainable development promotes the idea of social, environmental, and economic progress in a balanced and judicious use. The world's resources are finite, and growth that is unmanaged will lead to increased poverty and decline of the environment. In order to preserve the future, we must appreciate the interconnectedness between humans and nature at all levels. Sustainable development practices can help us do this, and through education and building awareness, preserving the future is within everyone's reach.

Environment for sustainable development is a broad-ranging, multi-disciplinary subject and the Government of India realizing the importance of Environmental Information has established in December 1982, an Environmental Information System and the Sustainable Development Networking Programme (SDNP) which are initiatives to make relevant information on sustainable development readily available to decision-makers responsible for planning sustainable development strategies.

The integration of Geospatial technology with sustainable development can promote better technical solutions for sustainable development. Spatial techniques such as digital mapping, remote sensing, Global Positioning Systems, Satellite imagery, and interactive geographic information systems provide important opportunities for developing useful applications and sharing information and techniques.

v Increasing energy and material efficiency in production processes; v Reducing wastes from production and promoting recycling; v Promoting use of new and renewable sources of energy v Using environmentally sound technologies for sustainable production; v Reducing wasteful consumption; v Increasing awareness for sustainable consumption. v Conservation of natural resources such as water, minerals, forests etc.v Reducing pollution of air, water, soils etc.
