There are two distinct tensioning processes that mustbe observed, according to the engine family.Some engines require:

- the application of a pretensioning torque (using thespecial tooling for the engine type) to the belt sectionto be measured to compensate for all the belt play.

- the application of a pretensioning torque followed bypretension T1 and final fitting tension T2.

The purpose of these two operations is to stabilise thebelt's internal tension, to make a reliable tensionmeasurement.

I - RECOMMENDATIONS FOR REPAIR

II - PARTS ALWAYS TO BE REPLACEDParts always to be replaced:- the belt,- the tensioning roller,- the fixed roller,- the crankshaft accessories pulley bolt.

III - PROCEDURE FOR TENSIONING THE BELT WITH PRETENSIONING TORQUE

Engine cold, ambient temperature.

Put the timing at setting point (top dead centre).

Refit:

- the tensioning roller,

- the timing belt.

Set the tensioning roller tight against the belt using tool(Mot. 1135-01).

Lock the tensioning roller nut.

Apply the pretensioning torque using the (Mot. 1386)for the D7 engine and the (Mot. 1501) for the K7M en-gine, using a torque wrench set to a torque of 10 Nm,to the belt section to be measured.

Unscrew the tension wheel nut.

Tighten the belt using the (Mot. 1135-01) whilst tensio-ning the belt using the (Mot. 1505) or (Mot. 1715) untilthe recommended fitting tension is obtained.

Lock the tensioning roller nut.

Turn the crankshaft four times.

Move the timing to the setting point.

Apply the pretensioning torque using the (Mot. 1386)for the D7 engine and the (Mot. 1501) for the K7M en-gine, using a torque wrench set to a torque of 10 Nm,to the belt section to be measured.

Check that the tension value is within the fitting tensiontolerance, otherwise adjust it.

Tighten the tensioning roller nut to torque.

IV - PROCEDURE FOR TENSIONING THE BELT WITH PRETENSIONING TORQUE AND PRETENSION

Essential special tooling

Mot. 1135-01 Timing belt tensioner.

Mot. 1386 Timing belt pretensioningtool.

Mot. 1501 Timing belt preloading tool.

IMPORTANTWear protective gloves during the operation.

WARNINGThe belt must be replaced with a new one if it hasbeen removed.When replacing a timing belt, the timing belt, fixedroller, tensioning roller and crankshaft accessoriespulley bolts must be replaced.

III - V BELT

Procedure for tensioning a V-belt

Engine cold, ambient temperature.

Fit the new belt.Put the tension wheel resting on the belt.

Tighten the belt using the (Mot. 1505) or (Mot. 1715) tothe recommended fitting tension.Lock the tension wheel

Turn the crankshaft through two revolutions.Check the tension using the (Mot. 1505) or (Mot.1715).

Check that the tension is within the fitting tension tole-rance; if not readjust it.

IV - RIBBED BELT

Procedure for tensioning a ribbed beltEngine cold, ambient temperature.Clean the crankshaft accessories pulley V-groovesusing a brush.Refit:- the new tensioning roller,- the new fixed roller,- the new belt.Put the tension wheel resting on the belt.Tighten the belt using the (Mot. 1505) or (Mot. 1715) tothe recommended fitting tension.Lock the tensioner.

Turn the crankshaft through two revolutions.Check the tension using the (Mot. 1505) or (Mot.1715).Check that the tension is within the fitting tension tole-rance; if not readjust it.

Essential special tooling

Mot. 1505 Belt tension setting tool (fre-quency meter)

Mot. 1715 Belt tension checking tool(frequency indicator).

IMPORTANTWear protective gloves during the operation.

WARNINGThe belt must be replaced with a new one if it hasbeen removed.

When replacing the belt, be sure to replace the ten-sioning rollers and fixed rollers.Do not run the engine without the accessories beltto avoid damaging the crankshaft accessories pul-ley.
