'37 Grads Find Trained Workers in Demand
THE depression-born storyabout the college graduate who searchedand searched for a job but never couldfind one seems to have lost its meaning.Members of the Class of '37 at the Uni-
versity of Oklahoma, especially thosetrained to do special kinds of work, foundthat they could almost let the jobs seekthem instead of going out to hunt forwork .
Several schools and colleges in the Uni-versity reported that they had more callsfor graduates than they could fill .
Engineering graduates found many op-portunities awaiting them . Every singlegraduate in geology or geological engi-neering who desired work found a job,and instead of having to take apprenticewages to "get a start," they received sal-aries ranging from $125 to $200 permonth, according to Dr . V. E. Monnett, director of the School of Geology .Two of the geology graduates, WalterW. Butcher and Howard L. Fielden, chose work in Venezuela. The othersare working in Texas, Louisiana, Oklaho-ma or Kansas . Many calls for geologistshave been received since school startedthis fall, but no recent graduates wereavailable.
instrumental music graduates all foundjebs, and W. R. Wehrand, head of thedepartment, declared he could have placeda dozen more in good positions if theyhad been available. R . H. Richards re-ports the vocal public school music de-partment was unable to supply the de-mand for music supervisors, and manyof the graduates going into this kind ofwork are getting $125 a month for theirfirst year of teaching . Graduates in artand dramatic art found plenty of jobsavailable.Home economics graduates who wanted
employment found good jobs waiting forthem . Two who received master's degreesin August are teaching in college com-tounities-Thelma Walker teaching inNorman High School and Mrs. AltaBlakey at Weatherford . These positionsare important because the classes are usedfor demonstration purposes .
Five graduates in hospital dietetics arelocated in the best hospitals in the coun-try : Pauline Naifeh at St . Mary's Hos-pital, Rochester, Minn . ; Exel Allender,University of Michigan Hospital, AnnArbor; Mrs. Mary Stubbs, University ofOklahoma Hospital, Oklahoma City ; Dor-othy Lindsay, Peter Bent Brigham Hos-pital, Boston ; and Hannah Ruth Wolfe,Montefiore Hospital, New York City .
It is interesting to note that Miss Al-
NOVEMBER,1937
lender received appointments to three dif-fcrent hospitals, and Miss Naifeh to two.Two home economics graduates went
into home service work, Dorothy Kelleyv=ith the Oklahoma Gas and ElectricCompany at Fort Smith, Ark., and Ruth()wen with the Oklahoma Natural GasCompany at Tulsa. Most of the pharmacy graduates found
places immediately in Oklahoma drugstores, while others became hospital tech-nicians or salesmen . Earl Joseph and PatHenry were given good positions as spec-ial representatives for Parke Davis andCo ., Detroit, Mich .
Graduates of the College of BusinessAdministration found many jobs waitingfor them, the demand for trained ac-countants being far greater than the sup-ply .As usual, more members of the gradu-
ating class went into teaching than intoany other single occupation . The de-mand for well qualified teachers was par-ticularly heavy this year.
