This school year, follow the journey of schoolchildren in Ethiopia, Madagascar and Nepal as their schools receive clean water and toilets for the first time.

Through updates, photos and films, WaterAid’s Schools Linking project will show the challenges children face and the transformation that water and toilets bring – helping your pupils to think global and act local to help some of the world’s poorest people.

Your pupils pledge to take action by raising

Meet Behailu, bringing you stories of transformation direct from the field. Behailu and his colleagues Ernest and Mani will bring yourschool regular updates, helping you to see what life is like inEthiopia, Nepal and Madagascar.

“I was born and raised in Debre Markos, a small town in Amhara region, in the north west of Ethiopia... You could think of it as the Stratford of Ethiopia. Just as Stratford-upon-Avon gave England Shakespeare, my home town gave Ethiopia its finest writers – playwrights, poets, songwriters and novelists.

I’m really excited to be part of the Schools Linking project, and look forward to bringing you exciting updates from Ethiopia!”

Your school’s fundraising will help provide the greatest gift of all to children and communities around the world – access to clean water,

somewhere to go to the toilet and a way to wash their hands

Water around the world: Explore how schools and communities in the developing world use and manage their water supplies.

Environmental sustainability: Natural resources are better protected for future generations.

Economic benefits of water and sanitation: With access to water and sanitation, people are healthier and more productive, workplaces are safer, and businesses can flourish.

Children’s daily lives and education: The daily task of walking to collect water leaves children with less time and energy to go to school, rest or play. With clean water and sanitation, children can go to school instead of collecting water, fewer girls drop out, and education outcomes improve.

Girls and gender equality: Rather than collecting water, women and girls are free to go to school, work and grow food, and are less vulnerable to abuse and violence.

Health: Improved water, sanitation and hygiene mean better health. Fewer children die and people are less vulnerable to disease.

At Ras Zesilas School, all the pupils understand that clean water is a scarce resource. Challenges associated with a lack of clean drinking water, toilets and hand washing facilities affect pupils in many different ways.

Hiwot is 17 and in the eighth grade at Ras Zesilas. She told us: “If you don’t have water it is not easy to learn. If you are really thirsty, will you sit there thinking about your thirst, or concentrate on what your teacher has to say? If you are thirsty, you cannot concentrate on your education.” Over the next academic year, your school can link to Ras Zesilas School, joining pupils like Hiwot on an amazing journey as they gain access to clean water and toilets.

Here’s one fundraising idea to get you started!

A small water bottle raises almost £5 when filled with pennies, and over £100 when filled with £1 coins!

Encourage pupils to use our template and design their own water bottle label. Why not create a display of all the bottles in school

and use the activity to help your students learn about water?
