    ASSIGNMENT 001Marcus Finneburgh | 2013 | Arl ignton TX

This piece is significant not because of pure aesthetics, but also because it was the first project I created for studio freshman year, and it shows the beginnings of how I am transforming my artistic abilities to the more design-oriented skillset needed in the field of architecture. It depicts my backpack on the first day, and was created in one of my favorite mediums: pen and ink. Its far from the best piece Ive done, but was a good starting point to expand upon while at UTA.

    TWILIGHT EPIPHANYJames Turrel l | 2012 | Houston TX

At first, James Turrells aptly-named skyspaces may appear as little more than a large, suspended plane with a simple central aperture to the casual observer, and for good reason--thats exactly what they are. This simplicity is a key to exactly what Turrell is trying to achieve, however. These outdoor spaces draw visitors attention to a natural wonder we all take for granted on a daily basis: the sky. Twilight Epiphany features a 72 square-foot ceiling plane constructed over a 2-level plaza, which serves as a small event venue and acoustical playground for RICE Universitys music students. The plaza is kept very clean and geometric, constructed of a dark grey granite that contrasts with the stark white ceiling. In the evening LED lights are projected onto the plane in colors that compliment the sky. All of these elements work together harmoniously to draw the inhabitants attention to the gallerys sole exhibit: the sky, which is presented to the viewer free of the surroundings, almost as if it were a dynamic painting on a gallery wall. Turrells careful control of both framing and light create a space that is both inspiring and beautiful.

CARMEL RESIDENCEJim Jennings Architecture | 2014 | Carmel CA

The Carmel Residence is a small-scale project located in California, which was created for a retired couple who wanted a modern house in the old-school sense. It is interesting because it pulls traits from architecture by the likes of Le Corbusier and Mies Van Der Rohe. It eliminates the need for sheer walls by elevating the ceiling plane on columns, and enclosing the spaces with glazing. The building is also arranged in such a way that the interior spaces enclose a series of exterior spaces. Its facade consists of simple vertical concrete planes (reminiscent of the Barcelona Pavilion) that provide privacy and control the light that enters the spaces within.

HOTEL THERME VALS Peter Zumthor | 1996 | Switzerland

The Hotel Therme Vals is an interesting structure built not above the mountainous site but rather into it, creating an almost cave-like feel for visitors of the pools. Tall, sheer rock walls flank the pools without any of the normal materials associated with water in modern society (tile, concrete, etc.), which furthers this naturalistic effect. Skylights let in natural light in a very diffused and controlled manner. The overall design and aesthetic Zumthor creates here is unique and powerful, while also remaining calm and simple, something not found in many buildings of this type.

Mountain, stone, water building in the stone, building with the stone, into the mountain, building out of the mountain, being inside the mountain how can the implications and the sensuality of the association of these words be interpreted, architecturally? -Peter Zumthor

BROAD MUSEUMDil ler Scofidio | Unbui l t | Los Angeles CA

The Broad Museum is an interesting project that is designed on a simple program that consists largely of just gallery space and a parking garage. Scofidios concept involves stacking these two volumes on top of one another and wrapping a tessellated cast-concrete shell around them, forming an eye-catching and structurally innovative building. Because of this complex concrete shells structure gallery spaces are large and interrupted, allowing curators full control over layout. Large openings in the ceiling allow diffused natural light to enter and fill galleries with a gentle yet bright light. Overall, what makes this building stand out is the integration of next-generation CAD/CAM design techniques with cast concrete to create a structure free of internal supports, allowing for theoretical free-plan (traditionally hindered only by structure) to exist within.
