PRESIDENT’S LETTER

The weather in the air has cooled and the holiday rush is beginning ... but Visionaries have already started its year with a bang!

On October 6 we had an evening reception and tour of the Phillips Collection exhibit with Cassandra Coblentz, Senior Curator & Director of Public Engagement, and Todd Smith, OCMA Director and CEO. Fifty people attended, and it was a great social event to kick off the season. Thank you Kim McEntee and Pat Steinmann for arranging the evening.

JoAnn Fanticola and Pam Muzzy arranged a day in Los Angeles on October 24th. We visited two collections and lunched at Craft Restaurant. All three places were absolute winners and a real treat. JoAnn and Pam are also busy planning a trip to San Francisco for the end of January. The trip is currently full, but we encourage you to contact JoAnn or Pam and put your name on a waitlist.

The Monday art class has been full of twists and turns this year. Dr. Jeanne Willette injured herself last spring and has not fully recovered. Though she started the fall class, Dr. Jeanne was unable to complete it. Jennifer Condas and Beth Bidna did an amazing job finding extraordinary professors to finish up the fall session. Dr. Jeanne will return for the winter session.

Marlene Hamontree, Pam Gilmour and Joy Berus will be meeting soon to review and update our bylaws. The small committee consists of two past parliamentarians and our current chair. It is always good to review and assess.

The Visionaries trip to Marfa, Texas will be from March 8 to March 11, 2017. If you are interested, please let Joyce Cassel or Pame Schmider know.

I look forward to seeing you all on December 14th at Barbara Cline’s home for our holiday party. We are so lucky to be invited back! Make sure you RSVP!

The 1960s ushered in tremendous social changes reflected in the many and ground breaking art forms that emerged. During the winter session, attention will be directed to the return of German art including artists Gerhard Richter and Joseph Beuys. A focus on pop culture will include the rise of rock n’roll and the importance of album-cover art. The lively times of Mary Quant and Swinging London will be explored as well as the influence of pop cultural icons like Andy Warhol. Finally, no cultural conversation about the 60s would not be complete without delving into two of the decade’s most influential style icons, Jacqueline Kennedy and Grace Kelly.

HOLIDAY PARTY:December 14 at Barbara Cline’s. 11:30 am

EXTENDED TOURS:March 7 - 10, 2017 - Marfa, Texas trip planned by Joyce Cassel and Pame Schmider.

GOOD NEWS:On November 29, the Newport Beach City Council voted by a margin of 6 to 1 to approve the Museum House Project. This strong statement of support by Council is complemented by a unanimous decision by the City’s Planning Commission in October. City Council’s vote moves OCMA one big step forward in realizing its dream to fund and build its new home at the Segerstrom Center. So many of the Visionaries joined the museum in its efforts to secure this outcome, and the museum staff and Board are deeply thankful for your support.

Dear Visionaries:

In 2016 we presented American Mosaic and let our historical gaze fall on the founding of modernism in

America. This opportunity to experience stellar examples of American painting from the Phillips Collection will

be complemented in 2017 by two exhibitions that continue our consideration of modern and contemporary art.

In January, we are pleased to present Pop Art Design. As the only west coast venue for this international

exhibition, OCMA will have the chance to consider through over 150 objects the intersection of Pop Art and

design in the 1960s and 1970s. We are all familiar with the standouts from the Pop era in the visual arts; one

need only think of Andy Warhol and the soup cans to refresh your memory. But have you considered how the

worlds of art and design interact and how these interactions shaped not only what was on view in galleries in

US and Europe but what was in our rec rooms and on our dinner plates. What a fun exhibition to allow us to

look back at this period and remind ourselves how plastics changed our world.

Opening in May, and curated by OCMA Senior Curator Cassandra Coblentz, OCMA will present the California-

Pacifi c Triennial: Building as Ever. This exhibition is a survey of contemporary art from around the Pacifi c Rim

organized on the topic of architecture and the temporal precariousness of the built environment.

The twenty-fi ve artists in this exhibition live and work in 12 countries bordering the Pacifi c Ocean and will

present work that includes drawing, photography, sculpture, and installation, as well as performance-based

and socially engaged activities. The majority of the works in the exhibition will be created specifi cally for this

project or will be on public view for the fi rst time; and many are site-specifi c installations. Among the issues

to be addressed are the concept of home and displacement, the recording of history and preservation, the

infl uence of global power, economics and political systems, and social-economic disparity.
