We All Need A Rescuer

Connect Time (15 minutes): Five minutes after the service begins, split kids into groups and begin their activity. Large Group (30 minutes): Begin 20 minutes after the service starts. Model what it looks like to be engaged in large group. Small Group (15 minutes): Keep kids in small groups until parents arrive. If you all have extra time at the end, you can review the video and songs together.

As you are playing with kids, ask them questions. Connect with them by asking about the best and worst part of their week. Kids' Club is hosting the first-ever Family Movie Night on August 1. Please hand out invitations with the Daily Talk Starters at check-out.

As kids leave, encourage them to tell their parents why we need a rescuer and who can save us.

Today, we’re going to talk about how we all need a Rescuer—and how Jesus is that rescuer! While part of today’s message reveals that Jesus is the one who rescues us, a huge part of today is about creating a need for a savior. *Pray ahead of time that the Holy Spirit works in kids and reveals truth to them and opens their hearts to understand.

That law controls the parts

GOAL: Connect Time is all about engaging kids in an activity that allows them to connect with each other right away while simultaneously piquing their curiosity for Large Group and preparing their minds for what they’re going to hear. “BLIND” DRAWING *Play in small groups or as one large group with one person leading.

• Give each kid a piece of paper and marker • Choose an object in the room (can be anything; just make sure it’s visible to all

kids) and point it out. • Tell them they have to draw that object, but here’s the catch: they cannot look

down at their paper. • Compare drawings after you’re done (for fun!). • Then discuss:

o Was it difficult to draw the object? Why or why not? o When you actually looked at your drawing, was it better or worse than you

thought it would be? o Ask kids about the best/worst parts of their week.

If you have extra time, remind them of your expectations for their behavior: (1) be kind, (2) listen when somebody speaks, and (3) follow the leader’s instructions. LEAVE DRAWINGS IN THE SMALL GROUP AREA FOR USE AFTER LARGE GROUP

Page 3: 35 071314 We Need A Rescuer Frozen Week 2 LW49gwb73j4zuj2z3clp19vafg-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/wp-content/upl… · It makes me a prisoner of the law of sin. That law controls the parts

Goal: Kids will (1) recognize that we all need a rescuer and (2) understand that Jesus is that Rescuer! Why? Jesus’ rescue becomes a lot more significant when we realize how badly we need it. Tip: You’ve got some extra supplies today for the “Extra Time” activity. Normally, those activities don’t take supplies but today’s activity does. If you don’t get to it though, that’s OK. The supplies are all re-usable.

REVIEW AND DIG DEEPER *Pass around a beanbag to the person who’s speaking. Each group member should be prepared to hold the beanbag and answer questions.

1. Give each kid a post-it. 2. Read Romans 7:21-23 in the Bible. 3. Have kids write ONE word to describe how Paul feels. 4. Place post-its in the middle of the small group area. 5. Read the words out loud. 6. Discuss:

o Do you guys feel like this sometimes? If you’re comfortable, will you share about a time you felt this way? (Model and share for the group first.)

o Why is it impossible for us to follow God on our own? o Why do you think we sometimes try to be good on our own? o Who did Paul realize can save him (read Romans 7:24-25)?

ACTIVITY: IMPROVE YOUR “BLIND” DRAWING (from Connect Time)

• Give each kid another piece of paper and marker • Tell them to draw the object they drew during Connect Time, but this time, they CAN

look down at their paper. • Compare your Connect Time (1st) and Small Group (2nd) drawings. • Then discuss:

o Was your 2nd drawing better? Why? o How do you think this connects to the lesson? (Relate to the way we need

Jesus; can’t be saved without him.) o What are some ways that we all need a Rescuer? o How do our lives change when we believe Jesus saved us?

*Thank God that he sent Jesus, the Rescuer we all need. Extra time? Here’s another object lesson that could be fun. You’ll need a colored sheet of paper and the sets of instructions in your small group bin (How to Make an Origami Hat). Here’s the activity:

• Split kids into two teams • Give all kids besides the leader a piece of paper • Read the instructions while the teams follow the instructions to create a hat. • The first team wearing their hats wins!

o Let kids get started, but know there is a KEY piece of information missing. o None of their hats will work. Once they’ve gotten frustrated, ask: What’s hard

about this task? • Then give both teams the missing instruction. • Let them complete their challenge. • Wear your hats and debrief:

o How do you think this connects to the lesson? (Relate to Jesus being our missing piece, the only one who can rescue us.)

Still got time? Decorate your hats!

*The boys may not love describing how Elsa felt during the movie clip. But the exercise will get kids up and moving—then you can turn and directly relate Elsa’s feelings to Paul’s, which is the main point of this “pair and share” activity.

Small Groups have an extra optional activity today. It would be better to finish Large Group extra early than to go extra late. If that means skipping a song at the end or even starting 5 minutes early, that’s OK. Just plan ahead with your team.

*Play the intro music as kids come in. For the Frozen unit, we’re using “Love is An Open Door” because it’s fun, upbeat and kids may be familiar with lip sync videos of it. But if you want to switch it up, use one of the other Frozen songs (all loaded onto the end of today’s Keynote). Hi everybody! Welcome to Kids’ Club. It’s great to have you here. I saw some of those drawings you guys just did during Connect Time. They were OK…though maybe not exactly perfect. Raise your hand if you actually did better than you expected (let kids respond). Raise your hand if you did worse than you expected. (Let kids respond.) You know, you guys tried to draw a picture without looking at the paper but you needed to be able to look at the paper. And often in life, we try to follow God on our own or we try to be good or we try to get rid of fear or embarrassment or things we don’t like… but we can’t do it alone. We need something else—we need a Rescuer. WE ALL MESS UP Truth is, we all have things we try to change about our lives. Deep down, we probably don’t WANT to be mean, but we’ve all said something rude about a person we don’t like or maybe hit a little brother or sibling. We probably wouldn’t say we WANT to get in trouble or make people upset with us. But we’ve probably all made the choice to do something that got us into trouble. It’s actually impossible for us to be good on our own. Nobody (except Jesus) has ever done it. Paul was a guy in the Bible who followed Jesus. He loved God so much and was constantly telling others about God’s love. But even he knew he couldn’t be good on his own. Here’s what he said in Romans 7:21-23:

Page 6: 35 071314 We Need A Rescuer Frozen Week 2 LW49gwb73j4zuj2z3clp19vafg-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/wp-content/upl… · It makes me a prisoner of the law of sin. SLIDE: Romans 7:21-23 Here is the law I find working in me. When I want to do good, evil is right there with me. Deep inside me I find joy in God’s law. But I see another law working in the parts of my body. It fights against the law of my mind. It makes me a prisoner of the law of sin. That law controls the parts of my body. Wow, that’s honestly a really hard verse to understand. We’re going to try to understand with the help of our movie of the month—Frozen! ELSA NEEDED A RESCUER (Show picture of Elsa.) So the character Elsa had the power to create snow and ice, but she hid it from people for many years. She didn’t want to hide it but she also didn’t want to hurt people with it. Eventually, she got so tired of hiding and being afraid. She decided to “Let it Go” and just create a crazy ice castle by herself on top of a mountain. But the problem is, Elsa couldn’t find freedom and happiness on her own. We’re going to watch a clip where Elsa’s sister Anna comes and shows her what’s REALLY happening while Elsa thought she was keeping everybody safe by running away to the mountain. See if you can figure out what happened when Elsa was creating a castle to live in all on her own. Video: Frozen Clip 2_35 (about 3 minutes) Turns out, while Elsa thought she was freeing herself and keeping everybody safe, what was she really doing? (Let kids respond.) Yes, she was actually causing more pain than ever. And when her sister Anna offered to help, did she take it? (Let kids say: no) Let’s think about how Elsa was feeling at this point. *In one minute, I want you guys to stand up and find one person wearing the same color as you. Then I want you to decide how you think Elsa is feeling. Ready? GO! (Let kids respond.) Now sit back down. I want a couple of you to come up here. Does anybody think you and your friend had a great idea of how Elsa may have been feeling? (Let 2 pairs share.) That’s right, she was probably pretty panicked when she realized she was hurting others. But she also thought there was no way to change and Anna couldn’t help her. Maybe she felt out of control. WE NEED A RESCUER Remember, Paul felt out of control too. He wanted to follow God and love others and share God’s love. But he found that he was constantly doing things that weren’t obedient to God. Sometimes it feels like we are messing up all the time too—or that people are constantly mad at us. Or that we can’t make right choices no matter how hard we try. But Paul knew that God had an answer. He knew there was only one way he could be saved or

Page 7: 35 071314 We Need A Rescuer Frozen Week 2 LW49gwb73j4zuj2z3clp19vafg-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/wp-content/upl… · It makes me a prisoner of the law of sin. rescued from his struggle. Let’s look at Romans 7:24-25 to figure out what Paul said: SLIDE: Romans 7:24-25 What a terrible failure I am! Who will save me from this sin that brings death to my body? I give thanks to God. He will do it through Jesus Christ our Lord. So how could Paul get saved or rescued from all the things he did that he didn’t want to do? (Let kids say: Jesus!) Yes, Jesus is the only one who can rescue us. God sent Jesus who never did ANYTHING wrong to take the punishment for all of us, who have messed up. OBJECT LESSON You know what it’s kind of like? I need a volunteer to help me for this. Can somebody come up here? (Choose a kid who seems bold.) OK, are you willing to wear this blindfold? (Let kid accept it. Then put on blindfold.) Great! Now, do you think you could walk around this room? (Let kid respond.) It’d be pretty hard, wouldn’t it? (If you want, you can give some directives and have them try and “fail” but use your discretion based on your room setup and group.) But what if I help you? (Lead the kid around the room. Have fun with is: walk through the crowd, get close to walls, etc. Then bring them back up to the beginning of the presentation area and remove blindfold.) How was that? (Let kid respond.) Yeah, you had a few close calls, but it was better, right? Thanks for helping! Go ahead and have a seat. (Let kid sit.) You know, that’s like this life. We are all going to mess up and have some bumps, even if we’re trying REALLY hard to go the right way. We all need a rescuer. We need somebody to help us and forgive us—and to redirect us when we hit those bumps. All of us need Jesus to rescue us from the wrong things we do. And when we believe that he has rescued us and let him love us, we can praise him just like Paul did. WORSHIP Let’s stand up and thank God for right now for rescuing us! Music Video: Wake Music Video: Better Than the Best PRAY Ask somebody to come and thank God for sending a rescuer.
