Chairman’s Report
Once again Country Cricket NSW
has much to celebrate on and off
the field in season 2018-19 and it
is with great pleasure I report on
some of the season highlights.
• ACT/NSW Country cricket
continues to be a leading
performer in the national arena at
the Cricket Australia under age
male and female championships.
There were top 4 finishes at all of the carnivals with the
standout performances being the female Under 15 and male
Under 17 teams winning their respective age groups.
• Central Coast deservedly won the Hogg-Silver Shield
with unprecedented success in the NSW Country male
programs. Success in the Kookaburra, Bradman and Colts
carnivals as well as the Plan B Regional Bash marked an
outstanding season. This was the Central Coast’s second
successive Hogg-Silver Shield. Their zone coach Glenn
Rowlands was justifiably NSW Country Coach of the Year.
• The newly formed ACT Southern Districts Zone had
immediate success in 2018-19 with wins at two carnivals. Their
Women’s team won the Under 15 carnival during a rain
affected week in Raymond Terrace and this success continued
with victory in the Male Opens final at North Dalton Park. John
Rogers scored and unbeaten 175 in the final for ACT Southern
Districts in one of the great innings seen in the history of the
competition. A pleasing result for our new zone.
• The Plan B Regional Bash continues to grow each
season. The finals day at the SCG was played midweek this
season due to scheduling issues at the venue but it did not
deter many supporters from all over the state attending the
finals day. Congratulations to the Central Coast Rush who won
their first Plan B Regional Bash. Next season we are proposing
to add a women’s division to the Plan B Regional Bash.
• For the first time the Kookaburra Cup and Bradman
Cup carnivals were played in the same week in the same
region. In what was a massive logistical challenge, Cricket
Albury Wodonga hosted a tremendous week of cricket that
received glowing feedback from all who attended. The playing
facilities were of an extremely high standard and the
organisation of the carnivals was first rate. A highlight of the
week was an evening gala dinner attended by all teams and
officials. Thanks must go to Michael Erdeljac and his support
team in the Riverina zone for hosting a great event.
• This season the presentation of the two major
individual NSW Country awards was elevated to the
prestigious Cricket NSW Awards evening. We thank the Cricket
NSW Board for supporting this proposal. As part of a
tremendous evening, Tahlia Wilson and Caleb Ziebell were
both present to receive their awards from Alex Blackwell and
Josh Hazelwood.
I would like to thank the following for their support of Country
Cricket NSW:
• Cricket NSW for its continued support and investment
in country cricket. The combined investment in country
programs, facilities development and staffing is in excess of $4
million.
• The NSW Umpires and Scorers Association for its
commitment to our programs.
• Sponsors Transport NSW, McDonald's, Kookaburra,
Dubbo Regional Council, Port Stephens Council, Inverell Shire
Council, Narrabri Shire Council, Albury City Council and Cricket
Albury Wodonga who support country cricket competitions.
• All the grounds staff and the many volunteers who
ensure our carnivals are run in a professional manner.
• The many media outlets across the state who
continue to give country cricket tremendous exposure.
• NSW Country Programs Manager Bruce Whitehouse
for his drive and passion for country cricket.
At time of writing, the CNSW Board had just announced a
$100,000 relief funding grant to provide assistance to country
regions that have been impacted by the current drought and
economic conditions. Country cricket thanks the CNSW Board
for its ongoing support of cricket in the regions.
To my fellow members of the Committee of Management I
thank you for your support during season 2018-19. As a group
we continue to work with great focus on all issues operational
and strategic that impact cricket in NSW Country. It is a
pleasure to be part of the team.

Men’s Competition
This year’s Championships were played in Shepparton,
Victoria, between 3rd and 11th January 2019. Disappointingly
this year saw the withdrawal of East Asia Pacific from the
Championships, leaving only five teams in the competition.
The Championships involved three competitions:
• Limited Overs Competition
• Twenty20 Competition
• Overall Competition Shield
As was the case in season 2017/18, the Bush Blues were the
dominant team in the Twenty20 division, qualifying for the
final after remaining undefeated in the preliminary rounds. In
a repeat of last year’s final, the Bush Blues defeated
Queensland by 25 runs on the back of a strong bowling and
fielding performance, headed by Scott Burkinshaw (4/11) and
Ben Patterson (3/15).
Sadly, the Bush Blues failed to win a game in the One Day
competition, losing all five matches, and finishing the overall
competition in fourth position.
This year there were seven debutants – Chris Archer (Central
Coast), Alec Baldwin (North Coastal), Adrian Chad (Newcastle),
Jed Dickson (Newcastle), Josh Geary (Newcastle), Ben
Patterson (Western) and Adam Taylor (Central Coast). The side
was captained by Central Northern’s Tom Groth, who during
the Championships became the most capped player for the
Bush Blues, passing Newcastle’s Simon Moore.
Simon Moore was inducted into the Australian Country
Cricket Hall of Fame at the Championships dinner.
Caleb Ziebell was the leading run scorer for the Bush Blues,
scoring 227 runs and was awarded the Player of the
Championships, with Graeme Batty (193 runs) and Ben
Patterson (189 runs) the next best. Scott Burkinshaw led the

Twenty20 cricket. Further, a “first past the post” method was
introduced to determine the competition winner.
After the first three days, any of three sides could have taken
out the title; however, heavy rain before the fourth day saw
two matches washed out and the remaining two shortened.
A victory over neighbours Newcastle saw Central Coast take
out their sixth McDonald’s Country Colts title.
North Coastal’s Oliver Cronin was named
Player of the Championships scoring 177
runs and taking six wickets.
Country Cricket NSW wishes to
acknowledge competition sponsor McDonald’s as well as
Central Northern Zone, Narrabri DCA and Narrabri Shire
Council for their support of the McDonald’s Country Colts
