Use a chinagraph pencil to mark 20mm onto the lead sheath and 10mm onto the insulation papers. Remove the release paper from the medium length of yellow stress control tape. Stretch the tape to about half its original width and wrap it around the lead sheath for 20mm. Remove the twine binder from the screen edge and continue with the tape over the screen papers and onto the insulation for 10mm. Use a chinagraph pencil to mark the lead sheath 20mm beyond the yellow stress control tape. Position the clear barrier tubing over the core end and over the yellow stress control tape, overlapping onto the lead sheath by 20mm. UNCONTROLLED

• Removetheinsulationfor30mmfromtheendofthecable.

• Cleananddegreasetheinsulationwithanapprovedsolventwipetoremovealltracesofconductingmaterial.Alwayswipefromtheopencutendtowardsthescreenwirestoavoidcontaminatingtheinsulationwithcarbonfromthescreenlayer.

• Wraptheconductivetapesuppliedinthejointingkitaroundthe30mmofexposedconductorstretchingittoabouthalfitsoriginalwidth.

• Increasetheconductordiametersufficientlysothattheinsulatingrodisasnugfitovertheconductor.Pushtheinsulatingrodontotheconductorensuringthatitbuttsagainstthecableinsulation.

• Shrinktheblackandredtubedownstartinginthecentre.Whenthissectionisfullyshrunkitshouldbesmoothwithoutridgesandshouldnotmovewhentwistingthetubeend.

• Continuetheshrinkingprocess,workingtowardsoneendandstopping50mmfromtheend.Thenshrinktowardstheoppositeendstopping50mmfromtheend.Finallyshrinkdownthefirstremaining50mmoftubingfollowedbythesecond50mmoftubing.Thisprocessensuresthatnoairistrappedinsidethetube.

4.1.3 Resin Filled Three-Core Transition Straight Joints (Three-Core Paper to 3 x Single-Core Polymeric Cables)

• Preparethecablesuptothepointasdescribedinsection3.3.

• ProtecttheCopperWovenTape(CWT)withnylontape,startingfrom20mmontotheleadsheathextending30mmontothecores.Thenylontapeshouldbeappliedwithtension.
