SpringThe day light hours are increasing and the sunny weather is making its way downunder. July was a busy time for me and my family, we had 3 birthdays and all were big milestones. My daughter Harmony turned 17, and will soon be on the road with her purple Suzuki swift driving up a storm.

I remember back when I first got my licence (can you?). The thrill of having my first taste of real freedom and branching out into the world on my own, it was such an exciting time in my life. She is a good driver who is courteous and cautious on the road. Tracey and I are excited for her and wish her the very best in everything that she does.

Tracey’s Mum turned 80 this year and to mark the occasion we had a family gathering at our house. Lynne had a great day and Tracey and I enjoyed making the day a special one for her. It was great to catch up with family, we need to do this more often.

I turned 50, yep I made it (phew). I have, as Tracey says, a twin to another mother. Our family friend Michael was born on the same day and year as myself, so to mark the occasion we did something very special. We went tandem sky diving. Current studies suggest that poor posture is directly related to long term quality of life. Yep - being able to do the things

that you want to do when you want to do them is what we are talking about.

If you suffer from back pain or someone you know does, look closely at their posture and the chair/recliner that

they sit in each day. Here are the 2 critical factors that the team at Geckoblue are

trained to look for when fitting our clients to the perfect chair for them. Factors that ensure the perfect fitting chair

for you, first time every time are- 1 Check the height of the chair being used, is it higher than your head or lower? If it is too high you may find your head being pushed forward, this will cause neck ache and discomfort. It is your neck that needs to be supported, your neck then supports your head. So ideally your head should be slightly higher than the chair when you are in a sitting position.

2 How deep is the seat? For ideal lumbar support the depth of your chair/recliner should duplicate the distance from your knee to your hip. This will ensure perfect lumbar support for you. And your feet will comfortably touch the ground.

Who chooses what’s in fashion?Well... I have been to Trend Camp and here’s what I’ve learned.

The study of trends, style and colour is very interesting to me, and I wanted to know how and why a trend is started and why colours are chosen to support that trend and style. So I went to Melbourne to listen and learn from Victoria Redshaw. She shared her knowledge on how her companies main role is trend forecasting. Victoria shared how and why trends begin and how they evolve year by year.

How do they trend forecasting?The part of trend forecasting is up and coming world events trend forecasting, things like a royal things like royal weddings, a change in political persuasion and hostilities in the world all affect how we feel.

Financial crisis, our environment, invention or introduction of new technology all impact on our society and social behaviour.

For instance when the world was dealing the aftermath of 911, when the planes flew into the World Trade centre, the colours that came from that were understandably shades of grey and solemness (and that is a reflection of how a lot of the world felt at that time).

Materials for this spring are bold and primitive with an unexpected hint of sophistication.

The surface elements are earthy, cracked and flaking, burnt or heat scorched adding to that earthy authentic feel.

The combination of metal, stone and wood, which create unique and interesting features to interior furnishings. A combination of natural finishes of geometric with woodblock printing adding to the creation of contrasts.

The look of this trend, therefore, is bold and primitive with an unexpectedly sophisticated edge.

Textures are deep and authentic in contrast to the smoothness of modern technology that we are increasingly surrounded by. Surfaces appear as though they’ve been exposed to the elements – think wet, gritty, oxidized, heat scorched, cracked and flaking.

A key factor in this trend is ‘material mash-ups’ – designers will combine everything from metals to wood to natural stone and ceramics together to create an interesting new aesthetic.

In terms of pattern, we zoom in on nature – think of bark, rock layers and dappled light effects as well as batik wax resists, woodblock printing and bleeding and bleaching techniques in contrast to tessellated and fragmented geometrics.

Delicious Spring Salad!

Ingredients

1 pint strawberries (rinsed, dried and hulled)

Walnut Balsamic Vinaigrette5 ounces Earthbound Farm Organic Petites

Lettuce Leaves1/2 cup walnut pieces (toasted)1/2 cup crumbled goat cheese (about 2

ounces)DirectionsCut the strawberries in quarters, place them in a small bowl, and toss them with about 2 tablespoons of the vinaigrette. Set aside.

Place all of the lettuce leaves in a large bowl and add 3 tablespoons of the vinaigrette. Toss to lightly coat the leaves; then taste and add more vinaigrette if needed.

Transfer the lettuce to individual salad plates. Top the lettuce with the strawberries, toasted walnuts and crumbled goat cheese, and serve immediately.
