JUNE-JULY 2017 ! Sivan-Tammuz-Av 5777 RABBI DAVID LAZAR
From Our President’s Desk Christopher Spellman
Dear Fellow Congregants, As the new President of Temple Isaiah, Iwould like to introduce myself to thosecongregants who do not yet know me, aswell as re-introduce myself to those that do. I have served on the board for the lastthree years, most recently as Vice-President.I have been attending Temple Isaiah sincethe late 1970's with my family and you’ll findme here most Saturday mornings. While Irecognize that our attendance Friday evening is much largerthan Shabbat morning, I personally find the morning servicemore meaningful. I particularly enjoy the Torah reading withcommentaries and insights that Rabbi Lazar shares with us.Through this weekly practice, I feel a real connection with myJewish ancestors and a strong bond with our tradition. I think that all of us share that desire to connect with ourJewish tradition and develop our spiritual identity and practicein a safe and nourishing environment. This is why we attendservices, classes and lectures, social events and tikkun olamactivities, and yes, this is why we pay our annual dues! As most of you know, there has been a great deal ofdiscussion over the last 6 months with regard to our long-termfinancial stability. Some are of the opinion that we must sell ourbuilding and downsize to a property more appropriate for oursize now and what we expect the congregation to be in the next5-10 years. Others feel that we have not yet exhausted all ofour options that would allow us to stay put at our historic site.Thankfully, through the generosity of one of our members,
Harold Matzner, who has covered our operating deficit forthe last fiscal year, we are able to utilize the next fewmonths in order to responsibly prepare two alternativeplans for our future. Two teams are simultaneously workingon these proposals and we hope to have both ready by theHigh Holidays. At that time, we will once again call ageneral meeting of our membership and, soon after, makea decision. In the meantime, there is much to do with regard to theongoing operations of our congregation. We have anumber of committees – Membership, Fundraising, Facility,Women’s Auxiliary, Social Action and Prayer - that arecurrently reassessing our yearly goals and working towardsa greater level of accountability for all who are responsiblefor getting the day to day work done at Temple Isaiah. Please let me know directly ([email protected]) ifyou feel you’d like to contribute in one of these areas. We have successfully increased our membership overthe last 2 years, as well as attendance at services, classesand programs. Not a week goes by when at least a numberof congregational events are taking place in our building –even in the summer months! But there still remains muchto do. I know that we can, and will, get this done together. We are truly blessed and I look forward to sharing thatblessing in wider and wider circles in the year to come!
Sincerely,
Christopher Spellman, President

From the Rabbi’s StudyRabbi David Lazar
This time of year, we begin to read thebook of Numbers at the Torah service onShabbat mornings. The first two chapters ofNumbers tell of the census Moses takes ofthe tribes of Israel and describe theirarrangement in the camp. The next twochapters list in great detail – far greaterdetail than the two previous chapters - eachof the clans of the tribe of Levi, who wereresponsible for the duties of service and
porterage relating to the Tent of Meeting, the Tabernacle thataccompanied the Children of Israel during their wanderings inthe desert. In other words, these two Levite chapters with 88verses in all, are dedicated to 96% percent of the eligible maleswho were counted, compared to 100 verses in the following twochapters for just 4% of those from the tribe of Levi! One of the key words we find in these passages is theHebrew root NS”A, having to do with carrying something, orbeing “carried,” which in this context means to be “counted.” TheLevites of age appear to have “counted” more than theircontemporaries in the other tribes who were the ones whoactually went out to war. Perhaps this is because while war wasan occasional event, the Levites were responsible for“schlepping” the Tabernacle parts, assembling these parts ateach new location of encampment, and breaking down upondeparture, tasks done constantly on a regular basis. I believe the ongoing dedication of these Levites to theirseemingly unglamourous task of portage earned them thedetailed attention of the author/editor of the book of Numbers. Regarding our own journeytoday at Temple Isaiah, wemight well learn a lesson fromthis ancient tradition. Manyamong us have voiced strongopinions about the future of ourcongregation, yet they have notcome forward to share therecent increased burden of“schlepping” – sitting oncommittees, raising money andoverall helping out with the dayto day running of our communityas we face our future in aserious and responsiblemanner. Whether our future lies at thehistorical site of Temple Isaiahor at another, smaller facility,we will always need many toshare in the burden of the oftenthankless work of ensuring thevitality of our congregation. Please come forward and helpus “schlep.”
