    The purpose of this policy is to establish TCCs official presence on Social Media. Byproviding instant access to relevant content and spurring meaningful dialogue, TCCSocial Media will contribute to the development of students as engaged citizens inan increasingly global community. Furthermore, TCCs use of Social Media willprovide a model of professional communication to its students, helping them achieve

    entry or advancement in the workforce.

    2. Policy

    Tidewater Community College shall establish an official Social Media presence,accessible to all, sharing news and stories that advance TCCs mission on thefollowing Social Media channels:

    www.twitter.com/TCCVANews

    New channels may be added to official TCC Social Media with the approval of theVice President for Institutional Advancement (VPIA). The Office of InstitutionalAdvancement (OIA) shall maintain and post online a directory of TCC Social Mediachannels.

    This policy applies to content posted by OIA on the above Social Media channels. Itdoes not extend to comments or content originating from outside OIA, includingpersonal pages and Social Media channels where TCC has no official presence. In

    posting content to official TCC Social Media channels, TCC employees shall complywith the provisions of Virginia Department of Human Resource Management(DHRM) Policy 1.75 (Use of Electronic Communications and Social Media) and theTerms of Use outlined by the respective Social Media platform.

    3. ResponsibilitiesThe Vice President for Institutional Advancement (VPIA) shall have overallresponsibility for TCCs official Social Media presence, developing and promulgatingprocedures to implement this policy. The VPIA shall designate those employees whowill be responsible for the establishment and maintenance of the various pages thatcomprise TCC Social Media. Such designated employees shall be responsible foradhering to this policy. The VPIA shall settle disputes related to TCC Social Mediaand shall take disciplinary action when appropriate within the context of applicableDHRM and VCCS policies.

    OIA staff shall maintain and post online Standards of Etiquette for anyone wishing to

    interact on TCC Social Media.

    4. Procedures

    TCC departments, programs, and recognized student clubs and organizationsdesiring to make an announcement through official TCC Social Media may requestto do so via an online request form maintained by OIA. If approved, a designatedOIA staff member will post that information onto the appropriate TCC Social Mediachannel.

    5. Definitions

    Social Media: Social Media refers to the use of web-based and mobile technologiesto turn communication into an interactive dialogue. Social Media is designed tostimulate interaction between a source and its audience, and vice versa.

    Social Media Channel: A Social Media channel is a website designed to shareuser-generated content. Examples of Social Media channels include, but are notlimited to, Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Flickr.

    7. Review Periodicity and Responsibili ty

    The Vice President for Institutional Advancement shall review this policy at eachanniversary of its approval and, if necessary, recommend revisions.

    8. Effective Date and ApprovalThis policy is effective upon its approval by the College President on February 28,2012.
