    IMPORTANTSafe Operation Practicesfor Walk-Behind Mowers

    This cutting machine is capable of amputating hands and feet and throwing objects. Failure to observe thefollowing safety instructions could result in serious injury or death.

    I. GENERALOPERATION1.

    Read,understand,andfollow all in-structionson the machineandin themanuals.Bethoroughlyfamiliar withthecontrols andthe proper useofthemower beforestarting.Donot put handsor feet nearorunder rotatingparts.Keepclear ofthemower bladeand dischargeopeningat all times.

    3. Onlyallow responsibleindividuals,whoarefamiliar with the instruc-tions,to operatethe mower.4. Clearthe areaof objectssuch asrocks, toys, wire, bones,sticks,etc.,which couldbe pickedupandthrown by the blade.

    5. Besurethe areais clear of otherpeoplebeforemowing.Stopmowerif anyoneentersthearea. Keepby-standersat least25 feetawayfromthe areaof operation.

    6. Donot operatethe mowerwhenbarefootor wearingopensandals.Alwayswearsubstantialfoot wear.Donot pull mower backwardsunlessabsolutelynecessary.Lookdown and behindbeforeand whilemoving backwards.

    8. Donot operatethe mowerwithoutproperguards,plates,grasscatcheror other safetyprotectivedevicesinplace.

    9. Referto providedinstructions forproperoperationand installationofaccessories.OnlyuseaccessoriesapprovedbyGardenWayIncorporated.

    10. Stop thebladewhencrossinggraveldrives,walks, or roads.11. Stopthe engineand disconnectthe

    sparkplug wire from thesparkplug

    wheneveryou leavethe unit, beforecleaningthe moweror uncloggingthe chute.

    12. Shutthe engineoff, wait untiltheblade comesto a completestop, anddisconnectthe sparkplugwire be-fore installing or removingthemulchercoveror the optionalgrasscatcher. Makecertainthat thegrasscatcheris securelyattachedbeforeoperatingthe mower. Emptythegrass catcheraftereachuse-decomposingdebris couldgenerateenoughheatto catch fire.13. Mow in daylightor goodartificiallight.

    14. Donot operatethemowerwhileunderthe influenceofalcoholordrugs.

    Neveroperatemowerin wet grass.Always besureof your footing; keepa firm hold onthe handleandwalk;never run.Disengagehe WheelDriveLeveronself-propelledmodelsbeforestartingtheengine.If the unit shouldstart to vibrateab-normally,stop theengineanddis-connectthe sparkplug wire. Thencheck immediatelyfor thecause.Vibrationis generallya warningoftrouble.

    18. Alwayswearsafetygogglesor safetyglasseswith sideshieldswhenoper-ating mower.

    19. Watchfor traffic when operatingnear, or whencrossing roadways.

    20. Neverattemptto carrychildrenorotherpassengerson the mower.Theycouldfall off and beseriouslyinjured,or theycouldinterferewiththesafeoperationof the mower.

    21. Checkthe operationof the OperatorPresenceControlBarbeforeeachuse.Seethe MaintenanceSectionofthis manualfor instructions. If theengineruns longerthan threesec-ondsafter theOperatorPresenceControl Baris released,he systemis not working properly. Immediatelycontactyour local servicedealerorthe factory TechnicalServiceDepartmentfor instructions.Do notusethe moweruntil the mechanismis repaired.

    22. Themower is equippedwith a safetydischargechute,comeswith specialmulchercovers,and offers an op-tionalgrass catcher. Thesafetydis-chargechute must beworking prop-erly atalltimes. Neverattempttodisconnector otherwisecausethisdischargechuteto ceaseworking. Ifused,mulchercover or grasscatcherattachmentmust beinstalledproperlyandfunction correctly. Donot useyour equipmentotherwise.

    23. Neverrun theenginein an enclosedarea.Engineexhaustcontainscarbonmonoxide,a deadlygasthat is odor-less, colorless,andtasteless.Alwaysrunthe engineoutdoorsand makesure there is adequateventilation.

    II. SLOPEOPERATION IV. SERVICESlopesarea majorfactorrelatedtoslip andfall accidents whichcanresultin severeinjury. All slopesrequireextracaution.If youfeel uneasyonaslope,donotmowit.

    DO:Mow acrossthe faceof slopes;neverupand down. Exerciseextremecau-tion when changingdirection onslopes.Avoid slopesgreaterthan150.Removeobjectssuch as rocks, treelimbs, etc.Watch for holes,ruts, or bumps.Tallgrass canhideobstacles.

    DONOT:

    1. Useextracarein handlinggasolineandotherfuels.Theyareflammableandtheir vaporsare explosive.a) Useonlyan approvedcontainer.b) Neverremovegascap or addfuel when theengineis running.Allowengineto cool beforerefu-

    eling.Do not smoke.c) Neverrefuelthe machineindoors.d) Neverstore the machineor fuelcontainer insidewherethere is

    an openflame,such asawaterheater,etc.e) Movemowerawayfrom any

    gasolinefumesbeforestartingtheengine.2. Neverrunan engineinsidea closedarea.

    III. CHILDRENTragicaccidentscanoccurif the opera-toris notalertto thepresenceof chil-dren.Childrenare oftenattractedtothemowerandtothe mowingactivity.Neverassumethatchildrenwill remainwhereyoulastsawthem.1. Keepchildrenout ofthe mowingareaand underthe watchful careof

    a responsibleadult.Bealert andturn moweroff if chil-drenenterthe area.

    objectsthat mayobscurevision.

    Beforeandwhile movingbackwards,look behindand down for smallchildren.

Nevermakeadjustmentsor repairswith theenginerunning.Disconnectthesparkplug wire and keepthewire awayfrom the plugto preventaccidentalstarting.Keepall nutsandbolts,especiallythebladeattachmentbolts,tight andkeepequipmentin goodcondition.Nevertamperwith safety devices.Checktheir operationregularly.

    6. Keepmowerfreeof grass,leavesorotherdebris build-up. Cleanup oil orfuel spillage.Allow mowerto coolbeforestoring.

    7. Afterstriking an object,stoptheen-gineand disconnectthe sparkplugwire. Inspectthe mowerand repair,if necessary,before restarting.

    8. Neverattemptto makemowercut-ting heightadjustmentswhile theengineis running.

    9. Grasscatchercomponentsaresub-jectto wear, damageanddeteriora-tion, which could exposemovingparts or allowobjectsto bethrown.Frequentlycheckcomponentsandreplacewith factory recommendedparts,whennecessary.

    Donot mowneardrop-offs, ditches,or embankments.Theoperatorcouldloosefooting or balance. 4.Donot mowexcessivelysteepslopes.Donot mowon wetgrass.Reducedfooting could causeslipping. 5.

    To accessthe undersideof themower,tip the mower rearward.Donot tip the mowerforward or on ei-ther of its sides,unlessspecificallyadvisedto do soin this manual.Maintainor replacesafetyand in-structionaldecals. Referto the sep-aratePartsCatalogfor replacementdecalinformation.

    15. Forunitsequippedwith electricstart:a) Batteriesproduceexplosivegases.Keepsparks,flame,

    cigarettes,etc.,away. Ventilatetheareawhenchargingthe bat-tery.Do notchargethebatteryinanairtight space.

    b) Donot usea batterychargerotherthan the oneprovidedwiththe mower.c) The batterycontainstoxic mate-rials. Donot damagethe batterycase. If thecaseis brokenor

    damaged,avoidcontactwith thebatterycontents.d) Properlydisposeof adamagedor worn outbattery.Checkwithlocalauthorities for proper dis-

    posalmethods.e) Donot short circuit the battery.Severeburns andfire canresult.

    Section2: AssemblySTEP3 ATTACHINGTHEBATTERYCABLES(MODEL F753B)Thepositive batteryterminal is markedPos.(+). Thenegativebatteryterminal ismarkedNeg.(-).Themoweris shippedwith the positive(Red) cablesecuredto thepositiveter-minal (+) onthe battery.Attachtheground (Black)cableto the negativeter-minal (-) onthe battery,asfollows:1. Removethe plastic battery cover (G,Figure.2-3) byunthreadingthe two wingnuts (H, Figure. 2-3) which secure it tothe batteryhold-down rods (I, Figure.2-3)2. Remove the hex bolt and hex nutfrom the groundcable/ heavyblackwire(E,Figure.2-3).3. Securetheground cableto thenega-tive batteryterminal (-) with the boltandhex nut just removed.

    IMPORTANT: If the batteryis putinto serviceafterthe dateshown ontop of battery,chargethe batteryas instructed in theMaintenencesectionof this manualprior to operatingthetiller.

    STEP4: Attach Control RodsA. AttachWheelDriveControlRod1. Locatethe wheel drivecontrol rod (F,Figures2-4A & 2-7) and removethe an-gledendfrom theleft handlebarby re-movingthe hairpinclip whichsecuresitto theWheel DriveControllever(V,Figure2-4A)2. At left side of enginedeck, insertswivelblock (H,Figures2-4 & 2-5) onwheeldrivecontrol rod into wheeldrivecontrol arm(U, Figure2-4).3. Adda 5/16" washer(A, Figure2-4)andsecurewith a hairpinclip (B).4. Atupperend ofcontrol rod,re-insertthe angledend into theWheel DriveControllever (V,Figure2-4A) and re-

    attach with hairpinclip (BB) removedearlier.B.AttachOperatorPresenceControlRod1. Locatethe OperatorPresenceControlrod (E, Figures.2-4 and 2-5). At bottomofcontrol rod, insert swivelblock (G,Figures2-4 & 2-5) into control arm (T,Figure2-4).

Add one5/16" washerandattach with hairpin clip (AA).D. AttachandAdjustGearSelectLeverNOTE:Theretainingplate(N, Figure2-5)mentionedin thefollowing steps is se-cured to the rearofthe mowerwith twoscrews (O,Figure2-5) and1/4"-20 lock-nuts. Removethe retainingplateandsaveit, along with the two screws, be-fore proceedingwith assembly.

Adjustlengthof shift link (P) asnecessaryo fit intohole in bottom of gearselectlever (I).NOTE:Pin (K) on GearSelectLever(I)must beheld inthe neutralpositiondetenton the shift quadrant(see Figure2-6) while shift link(P, Figure2-7) isadjusted.10. Insert hookedendof shift link (P,Figure2-7) into holein bottomend ofgearselectlever (I) andsecurewithhairpinclip (Q).NOTE:It maybenecessaryo lift gearselectlever(I) to install shift link (P).11. Removeunit from shippingcrate.To remove,hold downOperatorPresenceControllever (W, Figure2-5)which releasesthewheel brake.12. At the unattachedendof theelectricalwire harness,therearefour wires at-tachedto a largeplasticconnectorandtwo wires attachedto a small plasticconnector.. Plugthe largeconnectorinto the bottom of the ignitionkeyswitchthat is locatedon the undersideof thehandlebarconsole(not pictured).3. Usetwo cableties to securethe wire

    STEP 6: Check Motor Oil Level1. Movemowerto a levelarea.Pressand hold OperatorPresenceControllever (W,Figure2-5) to movemower.2. The moweris shippedwith oil in theengine.However,you MUSTchecktheoil levelaccordingto the instructionspro-vided inthe separateEngineOwner'sManualincludedinthe unit's literaturepackagebeforestartingthe mower.

    Do not use the mower if the wheelscontinue to turn after releasing theOperator Presence Control and theWheelDriveControl.Severe personal injury or propertydamagecouldresult if this instructionis notfollowed.

    IMPORTANT: THE MOWER ISEQUIPPED WITH A BLADE-BRAKE-CLUTCHCONTROLSYSTEMWHICH ISDESIGNED TO STOP THE MOWERBLADESWITHIN THREE(3) SECONDSAFTERRELEASEOF THE OPERATORPRESENCECONTROL. THIS SYSTEMWILL STOPTHEBLADESBUTNOTTHEENGINE.THEREFORE,YOUCANDISEN-GAGETHE BLADEDRIVEAT ANYTIMEWITHOUT HAVING TO STOP ANDRESTARTTHEENGINE.THIS FEATUREIS PARTICULARLYUSEFULWHENYOUNEEDTO CROSSGRAVELDRIVESORROUGH TERRAIN AND YOU DO NOTWANT THE SPINNING BLADESTO STRIKE STONES OR HIDDENOBSTACLES.

    MOWERFEATURESANDCONTROLSThis sectiondescribesthe variousfeaturesand controlson the unit. Referto the nextsection "Operation"fordetailedoperatinginstructions. Also,readthe separateEngineOwner'sManualfor a detailedexplanationof theproper useof the enginecontrols.Operator Presence Control

    The OperatorPresenceControllever(A, Figure3-1) regulatesthe operationofthe rearwheelbrakeandthe separateBladeDriveControl. Alwaysengagethiscontrol beforeengagingthe separatebladedrive or wheeldrivecontrols.Alwaysdisengagethis control beforestarting theengine.To engagethe OperatorPresenceControl,pressand holdthe leveragainstthe handlebargrip. Doingso releasesthe brakeon therearwheels,allowingthe wheelsto turn.Theengagedpositionalsopermits theseparateBladeDriveControlto lock in its engagedposition(allowsthe mowerbladesto turn).

    Releasinghe lever (disengagedposition) appliesthe rearwheelbrakeandquickly stops thewheels.Releasing

    the leverwill also disengagethe BladeDriveControl,which will applya brakethat stops the bladeswithinthree (3)seconds.Blade Drive Control

    Usethis lever(B,Figure3-1) to en-gagedriveto themower blades.To engagethe blades,first engagetheOperatorPresenceControl (A, Figure3-1). Then,push thespring-loadedBladeDriveControl lever (B)forward until itstays in theengagedposition.

    To stop the blades,releasetheOperatorPresenceControl (A). Doingsowill disengagethe BladeDriveControl(B) andautomaticallyapply the brakethat stops the blades.

    Alwaysdisengagethe BladeDriveControlbeforestarting theengine. Thishelpsto ensurethatthe bladeswill notstart turning whenthe enginestarts.

    The blade-brake-clutchcontrolsystemshouldstop the mower bladeswithinthree (3) secondsafter release of theOperatorPresenceControl.If the bladesdo not stopwithin three(3) seconds, put the Engine ThrottleControl in the STOP position.Disconnecthe sparkplugwire and donot operatethe moweruntil the blade-brake-clutchcontrol systemhas beenrepaired.

    Gear Select LeverUsethis lever (C,Figure3-1) to select

    any of four forward groundspeeds(1 -Slow,2 and3 - Medium,4 - Fast),N(Neutral)and R (Reverse).Thegearshiftpatternis shown in Figure3-2.

    Toavoiddamagingthetransmis-sion, donotshiftgearswhenthemoweris moving.Forforward travel, use oneof thefournumberedsettings.To select reverse,shift to neutralandthen pull upon thelever.Turn the leverto theR (reverse)positionand releasethe lever.

    Put the leverin N (neutral)to manu-ally pushthe mowerand whenthemoweris not in use.

    Before operating mower, be sure toread all safety, controlsand operatinginstructions in this Manual and ondecalslocatedonmachine.Severe personal injury or propertydamage couldresult if this instructionis notfollowed.

    Themower isequippedwith a blade-brake-clutchwhich is designedto stopthe mowerbladeswithin three(3)secondsafter releaseof the OperatorPresenceControlor the BladeDriveControl. Nevertamperwith, or attemptto defeatthe purposeofthis safetydevice.

    Thecontrol systemis a mechanicaldevicewhich issubject to wear.Therefore,test the operationof theblade-brake-clutchcontrol systembeforeeach useof the mower.Referto "BladeBrakeControlTest"at theend of thisSection.4. Select Mulching orSide-Discharge Mowing

    Before installingor removingmulchingcover, stop engine, wait for parts tostopmoving,anddisconnectsparkplugwire. Remove ignitionkey on electricstartmodels.

    Youcanusethe mowereitherasamulchingmoweror asaside-dischargemower. To usethe mulchingfeature,in-sert the mulchercover asdescribedbelow. Removethe mulchercovertoside-dischargegrassclippings. Themulchercover is designedto keepthedischargechute raisedup whilemowing.Whenthecover is removed,the dis-chargechutewill lower itselffor side-dischargemowing.To install or removemulchercover:1. Stoptheengineand waitfor all partsto stop moving. Disconnectthesparkplug wire from thespark plug.Removetheignition keyon electricstart models.2. Toinstallthe cover,insertthe right-sidetabof the coverinto the front sup-port bracket(A, Figure4-1). Insertthecover intothe dischargeopening, mak-ing surethat the slot (B) in the left sideof thecover iscompletelyengagedin therearedgeof thedeckopening.

    B.Turn ignition key(F, Figure4-2) fullyclockwiseto crank engine.     Whenthe OperatorPresenceControlis releasedduring operationof themower,the enginedoesnot stop,butthe bladesshouldstop within three(3)seconds.The followingtest providesavisualtest ofwhetherthe BladeBrakeControlSystemis functioning. Performthis test beforeeachuseof the mower.

    1. Parkmoweron aportion of lawnwhich hasnotbeenrecentlymowed.2. Setthe cutting heightso the mowercuts 1/3of the grassheight.

    To avoid personal injury or propertydamage, make sure that the mowerisongrass,andthatthe testarea isclearof foreign objects and bystandersbe-fore you beginthe BladeBrakeControlTest.If the OperatorPresenceControlor theBlade Drive Controlare not adjustedcorrectly,the bladesmay continuetorotate after release of the OperatorPresenceControl. If the bladesdo notstopwithinthree(3) secondsof releaseofthe OperatorPresenceControl,movethe EngineThrottleControlto the STOPposition, disconnect the spark plugwire, andmovethewire awayfromthesparkplug.     lawnshould becut upto the pointwherethe OperatorPresenceControlwas released.B. Pressthe OperatorPresenceControl
