Marli Koba The athlete of the week for Mariner Girls Basketball is Marli Koba. Marli is a 5’6” freshman post/guard. She has done an amazing job learning how to be a good teammate and committing herself to being the best basketball player she can be. Marli had a lot to learning having never been on varsity before but through hard work and determination became a contributing member of the varsity girls basketball team at Mariner. She is a very bright individual and understands the importance of maintaining good grades. The Mariner Girls Basketball Program expects big things from Marli in the future. Congratulations, Marli! Kamiak Fine Arts Student of the Week Samantha Muschett ~Dance~ Samantha Muschett says that a highlight of her four years in dance was her freshman year when “we took 1st in State. It felt amazing to know that all of our hard work paid off. I cried tears of joy.” Sam’s brother, Jeff, has served as an inspiration to her. “He works harder than anyone I know. I strive daily to be like him.” Currently, Sam serves as a chair of the team’s Spirit Committee. She is a great role model for the younger members of the dance team. Her future plans are to work as either a journalist or a member of a non-profit organization. NET F ive wrestlers from Kamiak and Mariner high schools competed in the annual Mat Classic wrestling tournament over the weekend at the Tacoma Dome. Kamiak finished in 29th place with 18 points as a team with senior Tyler Webley finishing in third overall. Wrestling in the 170-weight class, Webley started the tour- nament on Friday with a win over Bo Longmore from Skyline by an 11-1 decision. He won his second match, this time by 6-5 decision over Chiawana’s Tyler Vargas. In the quarterfinals, Webley lost to Union’s Alex Berfanger by 4-2 decision. Berfanger would go on to win the state title in the weight class. Competing in the consolation bracket, Webley beat Bo Campell from Yelm by 11-9 decision, and earned a win over Lewis & Clark’s Dakota Numbers by 6-3 decision to finish in third. Kamiak head coach Bryan Stelling said Webley had a great meet, battling back against the eventual state champion in the quarterfinals, but continuing on even after the defeat to place in the top six. “Tyler was very aggressive and focused,” said Stelling. Kamiak’s Tyler Frisch, com- peting in the 145-pound bracket, lost his first match of the double elimination tournament to Mead’s Wyatt Nemec by 4:49 fall. In the consolation bracket, Frisch beat Union’s Judah Reyn- olds by 4-3 decision, but lost to Ty Wilson of Rogers by fall in 44 seconds to end the tournament. Kamiak’s David Bikoev, wres- tling in the 160-weight class, won his first match over Oscar Marez of Graham-Kapowsin by 5-2 decision. Bikoev lost his sec- ond match, on Friday night, to Central Valley’s David Shepard by 9-2 decision. In the consolation bracket, Bikoev lost his second match to Yelm’s James Rodeman by 8-6 decision to end his tournament. “We had a fantastic season,” said Stelling after the Mat Clas- sic. “We took the most kids ever to regionals and several to state, as practice partners so they could get a taste of it. It’s quite the event, but the kids really enjoyed it. “I certainly think we have a good season, and for Tyler Frisch and David Bikoev, it was there first chance to make state, and to win a match is really great.” Stelling praised the senior leadership of the team this sea- son, and the hard work of the entire squad. “They were definitely a great leadership group,” he said. “Hard work really pays off. They are great kids on and off the mat.” Mariner captain Edgards Plor- nish competed in the 182-weight class. He lost his first match to Moses Lake’s Jordan Lacelle by fall in 1:03 on Friday morning. He lost his second and final match on Friday evening, this time losing to Heritage’s Jacob Cooper by 3-2 decision. Mariner’s Daniel Huynh start- ed his tournament, wrestling in the 285-weight class, with a loss to Auburn-Riverside’s Larkin Williams by 11-2 decision. He beat Inglemoor’s Mike Milcarek by 9-5 decision in the second round of the consolation bracket, but lost to Heritage’s Antonio Pulido by fall in 54 sec- onds to end the tournament. The Knights finished the sea- son with the team’s first league title in five years, while Mariner finished the year a 6-3 league record. Five wrestlers from Kamiak and Mariner high schools

competed in the annual Mat Classic wrestling tournament over the weekend at the Tacoma Dome.

Kamiak finished in 29th place with 18 points as a team with senior Tyler Webley finishing in third overall.

Wrestling in the 170-weight class, Webley started the tour-nament on Friday with a win over Bo Longmore from Skyline by an 11-1 decision. He won his second match, this time by 6-5 decision over Chiawana’s Tyler Vargas.

In the quarterfinals, Webley lost to Union’s Alex Berfanger by 4-2 decision. Berfanger would go on to win the state title in the weight class.

Competing in the consolation bracket, Webley beat Bo Campell from Yelm by 11-9 decision, and earned a win over Lewis & Clark’s Dakota Numbers by 6-3 decision to finish in third.
