The pungent smell of rotten potatoes filled the

kitchen as I opened the garbage bag. It was asthough the garbage had not been collected for

years. I held my breath as I took out the garbage, I

did not want to take in any of its toxic fumes.

    Butter Cake

The aroma of the freshlybaked butter cake made

    my mouth water. The

    sweet smell gently puts me

into a serene state of mind.

I smack my lips hungrily. The appetising layer of

vanilla and chocolate icing on the cake, promises

me a slice of happiness. As I slowly chew the cake, aheavenly sensation fills my mouth as the bitter and

simultaneously sweet taste of chocolate blends

    with the vanilla icing.

    Chlorine

I hate the smell of chlorine. It burns my

nose and pierces my brain. The smell is

sharp and cold, like the sharp edge of a

knife, slicing and digging through the

insides of my nostrils. The smell makes me dizzy, messing up my thoughts

like a rock thrown into a pool the still waters of my

mind. The smell of chlorine is like a high pitch

scream, it pierces, cuts and inflicts pain, messing

with ones head. I hate smell of chlorine.

    Economy Market

    As you walk past the

    Economy Market, you see

    millions of salted fish laid

    on old newspapers upon

the sandy road. All thefishermen are grinning from ear to ear as their fishes

fetch good prices. As the day passes, the atmosphere

becomes more chaotic. The distinct odour of fish

overwhelms the air, inducing queasiness. Men

wearing rubber boots and dirty jumpsuits fill the

street and push their way through the sickening

    odour.

    Within groups of crudely

    built stalls, fish, squids and

other kinds of seafood arevisible. Tuna up to five feet

    long are arranged in long

    rows. On wooden tables sit

mounds of dead octopus, fish and eels, their skin

    discarded on the floor as

    their meat await sale.

    Vomit

A nauseating stench punches the nose, quicklycausing one to wince in disgust. The most

noticeable part of the smell hits first: the acrid

whiff of digestive juices, nearly provoking the

onlookers to replicate the mess. The rest of the

stench follows quickly aftera sickening mix of partly

digested food and beverage, making some think twice of

the meal they had just eaten

    in transfixed horror.

    Onions

A light aroma wanders by,barely ticking your nostrils.

    The playful, almost

    mischievous smell beckons

you to seek out its tantalizing source, all thewhile whispering of how much it would satisfy

your renewed appetite. It is a homely, comforting

scent, reminding one of home-cooked food, caringly and lovingly put together with a

mothers touch. The sweet, yet savoury smell

then reveals itself almost with a flourish: brown,

    light caramelized onions.
