Winner of multiple international awards, the Vivascope, owes its success to the simplicity of its deployment and its efficiency of delivery. This AI-powered digital pathology solution analyzes and detects irregularities in cells using artificial intelligence. A doctor does not even have to be on-site to view the biological specimens. In emerging countries, this can be the differentiator, as many people do not have the opportunity to see a laboratory specialist easily. Also, it is not dependent on a single energy source, as the built-in rechargeable battery pack provides power for up to six hours – perfectly suited for remote areas and countries with power deficits. In such places, laboratory medicine is also scarce, and the ratio is sometimes one pathologist for more than 1.5 million people. With such numbers there is a high probability of delays and increased risk of oversight errors in the examination of blood and other samples for diseases. These challenges in diagnosis impact treatment and care delivery. In many developing nations, two-thirds of the examinations are still carried out with a microscope which is time-consuming and limited in accuracy.

The Vivascope can analyze the shape and structure of human cells round the clock, anywhere, in the shortest possible time. The smart technology magnifies the samples taken, creates digital high-resolution images, and analyzes them for irregularities using AI algorithms. The diagnosis and the decision on the type of treatment rests with the clinical doctor. With the Vivascope, the physician can quickly recognize abnormalities in the shape, size, or structure of the cells, and whether a disease or disorder is present. This is particularly important for the early detection of various diseases and disorders that could be fatal.

The AI-based device is fed with over 30,000 images and around nine million data points from cells. Our experts collaborated extensively with medical professionals

and pathologists to identify more than 165 distinct characteristics per cell, which the Vivascope could analyze. But it does not stop at just pattern-recognition – through advanced image-processing and machine-learning algorithms, it makes the results continuouslybetter. The more the Vivascope is used, the moreprecise is its analysis. Currently, it takes less than 15minutes to evaluate a sample, whereas a manual cellanalysis in the laboratory can take several hours.

With massive strides being made in IoT technology along with its growing interest and implementation, products are no longer seen the way they were before. This can be from the eyes of the consumer, where ‘smart’ wearables and appliances open up a whole new world of simplicity and convenience, particularly so to a generation that is digitally inclined. While for manufacturers and innovators, this connected ecosystem provides some unique opportunities and insights into how products are being utilized, with their features being harnessed to deliver a better experience.

This proliferation is across segments, and is now a critical component as a product evolves, to offer more, and expand its functionality and purpose. All you need is the right partner that has the expertise and specific industry experience to craft this approach and actualize your vision.

Technology powers our lives – from our daily routines, through work, and across industries. While power is critical for all industries and enterprises, its consumption has been at the forefront of business sectors, and its handling & management need to be continually revaluated to set standards in operational efficiency, with due consideration for the pressing ecological concerns of today.

The Phantom from Bosch studies the energy signatures of devices, and monitors & measures consumption patterns. By non-intrusively tapping into the energy network, it tracks the usage and load within devices individually, at different operational periods. The Phantom is a solution in a box, and a cloud platform. The box is connected to a machine by clamping two wires to the cables supplying power to the machine. It sits quietly next to the device and monitors its performance and energy consumption patterns, non-invasively. The data derived, based on consumed load, duration of usage, peak usage patterns, and more, can be used to identify potential faults and improve efficiency to bring down periodical service expenditure. Data is transmitted wirelessly to the cloud for the user to then view via dashboards. As an intelligent edge device, the AI algorithms process the data and run analytics.

Technology, along with digitisation, has permeated well into the automotive industry, and the mobility space is seeing dramatic change. From car-sharing and electric vehicles to driverless cars – everyone is excited about what is to come, and the amazing ways in which personal transportation will evolve, with technology. But connected cars do more than just wow! The technology is being used extensively for protection, safety, and immediate assistance.

The eCall solution is an emergency call system for cars, which enables a faster emergency response in case of accidents and other emergencies. It thus helps save lives. As soon as the eCall has been triggered automatically by the vehicle or manually by the occupant the integrated control unit calls a Bosch monitoring center. At the same time, it also sends a minimum set of data to Bosch, which comprises the time of the accident, the GPS location coordinates of the accident, the vehicle identification number, a time stamp, as well as the eCall qualifier indicating whether the eCall was triggered automatically or manually. The Bosch service experts verifies the situation and, in case of an emergency, directly initiates corresponding rescue measures. If, for example, none of the occupants respond, an emergency doctor is dispatched immediately. If, on the other hand, the occupants can be contacted and are uninjured, there is no need to send an ambulance or a doctor. To achieve a fast and efficient service, Bosch Service Solutions has created a partner network

of relevant PSAP (Public Safety Answering Points) contacts in India, which enables access to over 13,500 verified hospitals and police stations.

Although eCall improves security of life and limb, some are simultaneously worried about the security of their data. Relying on Bosch eCall, this is unnecessary. For Bosch, data security is a top priority. Only in case of an emergency Bosch receives data that is essential for the handling of accidents – in other words, information that are important to assess the accident situation and send corresponding help.

Overall, the eCall solution is a great example of how the new chances of connected cars can help save lives.

We are glad to share the news of our first investment venture in India with an increased stake in SimYog Technologies, a deep-tech startup in the Electronic Design Automation (EDA) space. SimYog Technologies focuses on providing ‘Design and Sign-off Tools for Automotive Electronics’ as a software solution. This solution would allow hardware developers to test an electronic component’s resistance to electromagnetic interference (EMI) in the design stage.

Typically, auto component makers develop multiple prototypes and test for EMI before mass production. The SimYog solution aims to reduce the time taken to develop electronic controllers that go into cars and trucks. In this sector, a chunk of the vehicle cost lies in its electronic and electrical components, and even

more so when it comes to electric vehicles. SimYog uses data analytics and machine-learning to overcome this challenge, by reducing the number of prototypes during component development, and accelerating time-to-market & saving costs.

Founded in 2017 by Dr. Dipanjan Gope, Bengaluru-based SimYog is incubated at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc). Their solution will soon be able to test an additional parameter, further improving its product functionality. This is yet another great example of how academia and industry can come together, as SimYog emerged out of collaborative research that began in 2012 between Bosch engineers, enrolled for a PhD program at IISc, along with Dipanjan Gope. The intellectual property is jointly held by the institute and the company.

Universities such as IIT Madras have the expertise to come up with solutions to these global problems, and cross-border collaboration is the need of the hour. I am happy that Germany could contribute to the foundation of this institute, sixty years ago.”

Prof. Bhaskar Ramamurthi, director of IITM, said: “Many important projects related to sustainability, land use, and waste management are being done at the Indo-German Center for Sustainability (IGCS), which is an important center of collaboration between IIT Madras and RWTH Aachen University, and has grown over the years. The new focus on coastal management now, is due to climate change.” Prof. Ramamurthi was also conferred with the RWTH Honorary Fellow Award by Prof. Rüdiger for his scientific achievements and his contribution to the bilateral cooperation between IIT Madras and IGCS.

The IGCS serves as a platform for collaboration between German and Indian scientists on fundamental and applied research, teaching and training, and dissemination of information in sustainable development. Its special focus is the protection of the environment – conserving water resources, energy, land use, rural development, and waste management.
