1 I OUR MISSION

CSA Mission Statement

We, the Sisters of St. Agnes, participate in the mission of Christ by joyful service in the Church,

always aware that we, too, are among the needy and are enriched by those we serve. Inspired by our founders–by the missionary zeal of Father Caspar Rehrl, the courageous initiatives of Mother Agnes Hazotte and the spiritual influence of Father Francis Haas–we continue to respond in our own times to those whose faith life or human dignity is threatened.Rooted in Christ through prayer and worship we serve in both rural and urban settings throughout the United States and in Latin America. We strive to minister with simplicity and hospitality in the fields of education, health care, pastoral ministry, and social service.

We are committed to transformation of the world, the Church and ourselves through promoting

• systemic change for the quality of life• justice for the economically poor• furtherance of the role of women in church and society• mutuality, inclusivity and collaboration.

Love binds us together, and by sharing our lives and our faith in community, we support one another to live with singleness of purpose: that among us and in our world the Risen Christ be discovered and revealed.

Dear Partners in Ministry,“I thank my God every time I remember you…” (Philippians 1:3)

This message from St. Paul to the early Christians embodies my thoughts of you, our friends in mission and ministry. As companions on our missionary journey throughout the United States and in Nicaragua, you are an extension of the community of Sisters of St. Agnes, your ongoing support serving as the crucial link between the sisters and those in need.

Just as the Philippians supported Paul spiritually and financially, you help us to carry on the teaching and healing ministry of Jesus, empowering others and bringing hope and inspiration to all those who turn to us in their time of need. I echo Paul’s prayer as I reflect on the many generous gifts from our donors, which brought an abundance of blessings this past year and raised songs of joy and thanksgiving.

Through your help, we were able to reach 94 percent of our goal for our first CSA Annual Fund Appeal in support of the Mother Agnes Projects, ensuring that our sisters can continue to minister in homeless shelters, hospice homes, cancer treatment centers, and many other nonprofit organizations around the nation. In addition, your support of the Care of the Elderly Appeal helped us to continue to provide a life-giving environment for our beloved elderly and infirm sisters, who have devoted their entire lives to service and prayer.

During the course of this past year, CSA was the recipient of several generous estate gifts from those who believed in our mission and recognized the importance of our ministries. Their foresight and generosity has challenged us to become proactive in developing a strong planned giving program to give other friends of CSA a similar opportunity to support our work today and in the future.

The Congregation of Sisters of St. Agnes gives joyful thanks for each of you, our partners in ministry – not only for your financial support, but also for your presence, loyalty, and belief in our mission. Thank you for sharing your blessings with us and with those whom we serve, and we look forward to continuing our journey together, being and building communities of faith and service.

Blessings,

Sister Joann Sambs, CSA General Superior

3 I CSA REUNIONS

If a picture can paint a thousand words, then the beautiful memories shared during recent reunions at parishes and schools in communities around the nation illustrate the amazing story of the legacy of the Sisters of St. Agnes.

Over the course of the past year, several schools and parishes have hosted reunions, welcoming the sisters back to the areas where they have taught and ministered. Alumni, friends, co-workers, and family members opened up their hearts and their homes, allowing many of the sisters to revisit the elementary and high schools, where students were not only instructed, but also inspired for several generations.

The imprint of their work lives on in the parishes, the communities, and in the people who learned from the sisters about academics, values, and faith.

Places We Have Loved…Communities host reunions welcoming back

the Sisters of St. Agnes

Sister Joann Sambs, left, and Sister Sharon Pollnow, right, joined in celebrating a reunion in Defiance, Ohio, where the Sisters of St. Agnes ministered for more than a century.

The sisters traveled in style to Elmhurst, Illinois, (above) courtesy of a former student.

A plaque honoring the Sisters of St. Agnes, who taught for many years in Decatur, Indiana, adorns the entrance to a newly remodeled preschool building.

Many gathered for reunions in Decatur, Indiana, Elmhurst, Illinois, and Defiance, Ohio, bringing pictures and sharing memories of the years that the sisters taught and lived in the areas. Another reunion is currently being planned in Yonkers, New York, in April 2013, with guests also being invited from Bronx and East Harlem.

“It is truly an honor and privilege for the sisters to go back to the schools where they taught,” shared Sister Joann Sambs, CSA General Superior.

“So many people have honored us by sharing their memories and welcoming the sisters with such warmth and love,” she added. “It has given us the opportunity to see how each of the parishes and communities has carried on the mission and spirit of CSA many years after the sisters left. What a wonderful tribute to the work of the sisters and a testament to the spirit-filled communities who continue to embrace their faith with compassion and sincerity.”

REVISITING & RECONNECTING I 4

The Sisters of St. Agnes visited several parishes where they taught and lived for many years, reconnecting with families and communities. Reunion events included commemorative Masses, receptions, and

the sharing of many stories and memories.

Throughout its more than 153-year history, the congregation has responded to the needs of people in communities throughout the nation, building and staffing schools and hospitals, as well as initiating community programs to help victims of abuse, those struggling with addiction, homeless, elderly, children, and many more.

Reconnecting with the people whose lives have been touched and transformed by the work of the sisters has provided many with the opportunity to express their mutual appreciation.

“We feel truly blessed by our work and our ministries,” concluded Sister Joann. “We receive so much more than we give through the gratitude that people show, but more importantly, through the knowledge that we, too, are among the needy and enriched by those whom we serve.”

The parish schools where the sisters taught in Ohio, Illinois, and Indiana continue to carry on the rich tradition of Catholic education. The recent reunions in several states have allowed the Sisters of St. Agnes to reconnect with former students, co-workers, and friends. Another reunion is planned for April 2013 in New York.

CSA Development Advisory BoardThe Development Ministry of the Congregation of Sisters of St. Agnes exists to invite others to share in the mission of the

CSA community and to cultivate resources which support their current and future initiatives, including the support of members as they engage in ministry at each stage of their lives.

Dear Friends of CSA,This past year has been an exciting one for the CSA Development Ministry Office, as we worked to build new relationships and rekindle old ones. Motivated and guided by the wonderful mission of CSA and a desire to be conscientious stewards of your generous gifts to the congregation, members of our staff and advisory board collaborated in the creation of a five-year strategic plan, educational campaign, and community outreach.

Sharing stories of hope and inspiration through our communication efforts, our goal is to tell everyone about the work of the sisters and the incredible impact that it has on the lives of so many throughout the United States and in Latin America. Each day, we are blessed to be surrounded by the aura of mission that is so central to the sisters in their ministries and beyond. We are all fortunate to be a partner in their efforts to transform lives.

Our work to sustain CSA’s ministries is only possible due to your generosity – you who believe in and support the sisters and their mission of service to those in need. This annual report is a summary of the financial support from all of you; but, more importantly, it is a heartwarming testament to your commitment to the Sisters of St. Agnes and those whom they serve.

It is my hope that each of you has a blessed year and will continue to partner with us as we work to support the sisters, bringing hope to those living in homeless shelters, struggling to overcome addictions, yearning for companionship on life’s final journey, or seeking spiritual guidance during difficult times. May God bless each of you!

Blessings,

Terry Letvinchuck, Director of Development Ministry

CSA Ministries: BEing & BUILDing CommunityFaithful to its chapter goal of BEing and BUILDing community, the Congregation of Sisters of St. Agnes continues to embrace and share its mission with people throughout the United States and in Nicaragua, where its ministries of hope touch the lives of many. From homeless and domestic abuse shelters to hospice homes, hospitals, parish schools, and social service facilities, the sisters work to transform lives by serving those in need.

Their response to the needs of communities helps children living in impoverished communities to receive a faith-based education, the elderly and homeless to find shelter, hope, and dignity, and hospice patients to experience an end-of-life journey with a compassionate listener at their side.

During the course of the past year, the sisters have worked to change the lives of others through direct services as well as through advocacy, giving a voice to women and children who are victims of human trafficking and helping immigrants to adjust to a new culture while respecting their beliefs, traditions, and customs.

The sisters currently minister in 15 states with 85 different ministry locations, focusing on education, health care, social services, and spiritual guidance. The impact of their work is evident in the many who believe in and support the congregation financially, but also through the gratitude of those whose lives have been changed – the mother who finds the courage to escape domestic violence, the homeless man who discovers dignity, or the terminally ill patient who seeks inner peace.

The generous support from our friends and donors allows the sisters to continue in their work in many different parts of the country. The Congregation of Sisters of St. Agnes is truly grateful to all those who have shared their gifts and prayers with the sisters – it is certainly a mutual gift.

THANK YOU!

17 I PARTNERS IN STEWARDSHIP & TRANSFORMATION

Page 19: 320 County Road K - Congregation of Sisters

How Can I Become a Partner in CSA Ministries?NOTE: CSA does not receive compensation or financial benefits from any of the

organizations which it founded, funded, or currently sponsors.

Financial support of CSA ministries allows the sisters to continue to provide vital assistance to those in need, to advocate for economic justice, and to fulfill the call of service to the people of God. Gifts may be designated for one of the following: • Mother Agnes Projects/U.S. Ministries • Latin American Ministries • Care of the Elderly Sisters • Wherever the Need is Greatest

CASH OR CHECK GIFTSCash or personal checks made payable to the Congregation of Sisters of St. Agnes represent one of the most common ways to support the sisters’ ministries.

ONLINE GIFTSDonors may visit CSA’s website to make one-time or monthly gifts. After the secure server donation form is submitted, an electronic confirmation is emailed to the donor.

NON-CASH GIFTSAssets, stocks, and bonds may be donated which also yield tax advantages to the donor (based on the market value of the donation at the time that the gift is received by CSA).

HONORARY OR MEMORIAL GIFTSDonors wishing to make gifts in memory or honor of a loved one may do so by indicating the information on the donation envelope or by written communication.

MATCHING GIFTSDonors may request a matching gift form from employers, complete it, and mail to CSA. Matching gifts are an excellent opportunity to increase the value of a gift.

DEFERRED OR PLANNED GIFTSPlanned giving donations often require assistance from a legal or financial advisor. When CSA is named as the beneficiary of an estate, bequest, trust, retirement plan, or insurance policy, the attorney/advisor preparing the legal documents should be informed that the corporate title is the Congregation of Sisters of St. Agnes.
