From the Principal’s Desk….
Welcome to Week 7. While not where we had hoped to be, I would like to thank the Birregurra community for your support and understanding during this lockdown. I understand the strains that remote learning puts on families and households as you juggle family life, housework, schooling and work. Please take care of yourselves and do the best you can. Our program is de-signed to be flexible to allow students the opportunity to complete activities in the timeframe that works best for your family and current situation. Please reach out to our staff if we can be of any assistance. Hopefully we will see you all back onsite Fri-day.
Prep Information Morning
Unfortunately our Prep Information Session scheduled for today has been postponed due to the lockdown. A new date and time will be advertised shortly. Thanks for your understanding.
Education Week Open Morning
It was wonderful to have some of our families join us last Tuesday morning for our ‘Open Morning’ celebrating Education Week and the theme Building Connections. Parents and family members were invited into our classrooms to enjoy a snippet of school life and the various areas of the curriculum.
In the Prep room, Mrs McDonald shared ‘The Dot’ picture story book, shining a light on how we all have special, artistic talents. Students and visitors then had a go at creating their own imaginative ‘dot’ pictures before finally building some colourful circle and dot collages.
In the Grade One classroom, students and visitors engaged in a variety of Maths Rotations with games and challenges.
In line with this year’s theme ‘building connections’, the Grade Two’s designed and built their very own miniature, Beebot com-munity. Students identified and discussed local community services they are familiar with and used a range of materials to col-laboratively create these community buildings and public spaces. Students then challenged themselves to program their Beebots, navigating their way around their newly built community and visiting a number of sites!
Our 3/4 students and visitors were introduced to an Italian card game ‘Scopa’ with Signora, exposing them to the Italian cul-ture. Scopa- an Italian card game, is one of the two major national card games in Italia, the other being Briscola. ‘Scopa’ is the Italian word for ‘broom’. The main objective of the game is to hold a card that is the same as the last remaining card laying face up in the middle or have a card that adds up to the total of the remaining cards laying face up in the middle. This move is re-ferred to as a ‘scopa’.
Our 5/6 students braved the cooler conditions to engage in PE with Mr King. They enjoyed a game of European Handball during the open morning, enabling them to continue to develop their teamwork skills and hand-eye coordination.
It was a wonderful morning and we thank our visitors for taking the time to come along and engage with our students and teachers. Please enjoy the photos in today’s newsletter.
Our Vision: To be an outstanding rural school where care, curiosity, innovation and progressive
practices ensure students thrive in an ever-changing world.
Lightning Premiership

Well done to our football team who fought competitively throughout the day bringing home one win. Thanks to Mr King for coach-ing and supporting the team.
Congratulations to our star netballers who displayed amazing sportsmanship and perseverance throughout the day to come home as winners of the B division. Thanks to Miss Lowe and Ms Hannah for supporting our girls to victory. We are super proud of you all.
Thanks again to Serema for umpiring the netball and to the parents that came along to support our football and netball teams.
Absences: Please notify the school on 52362222 if your child is away or alternatively use the
Skoolbag app.
Reconciliation Week 2021
The theme for Reconciliation week 2021 is ‘More than a word. Reconcilia-tion takes action’. It urges the reconciliation movement towards braver and more substantive action.
2021 marks twenty years of Reconciliation Australia and almost three dec-ades of Australia’s formal reconciliation process. National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.
The dates 27 May to 3 June commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey— the successful 1967 referendum, and the High Court Mabo decision. Reconciliation must live in the hearts, minds and ac-tions of all Australians as we move forward, creating a nation strengthened by respectful relationships between the wider Australian community, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This week students across the school will engage in activities relating to Reconciliation Week to develop their understanding of our rich history and culture.
Parent Teacher Conversations
Parent /Teacher conversations will be held next week (Week 8). Please see the table below regarding available times and phone Mrs Leigh in the office to book your preferred appointment time. As was the case in Term 1, conversations will be for 10 minutes and teachers will phone parents at the nominated time. Teachers look forward to connecting with families to share students learning progress throughout Semester One.
In addition to Parent / Teacher Conversations we are also holding a ‘Learning Showcase’ on Wednesday 16th June. This will occur between 3:15 – 5:30pm. This is an opportunity for families to come into the classroom and engage in conversations with your child/ren about learning tasks they have completed this semester and how the classroom operates. You are wel-come to come in anytime during the two hour period and stay for as little or long as you like.
Reminders Please note that our staff are committed to supporting the learning and wellbeing of all students in our school community. Our main priority is the health and wellbeing of students during these difficult times. If you have any concerns for you or your family, please reach out to us.
Wishing everyone a safe and happy week.

BioCats Recount By Georgia F
24th May, 2021
Today Grade 5/6 went to BioCats at GMHBA Stadium, to learn about how maths and sci-
ence is used in football. We did a number of things, like an Amazing Race challenge and
collected data about our running speed.
Data Collection
We wore a Geelong Cats jumper, which had a pouch in the back with a tracker in it. Every
tracker costs about $10,000 each! We were put in seven different groups and one person
from each group wore the jumper. You started in a hula-hoop and you would run back and
forth, collecting bean bags at the other end. The aim was to run as many meters as you
could in 60seconds; I ran 192m! We also collected data on our top running speed.
Amazing Race
We stayed in the same groups we were in for running. We had six stations to complete
about football, with each station having lots of questions. There would be winner at the
end because you would get points for every question you got right. At the end, the winners
were a draw A.I.S (Aidan, Isaac L and Sam) and Gazzfurpet (Rueben, Emie and Matilda). My
group came 3rd.
I really enjoyed our trip to BioCats, it was amazing!!
Birre Takes Out A Win For The Netball
By Matilda G
On the 26th of May Birre sent 2 teams into Colac for the annual lightning premiership. We sent a team to Central
Reserve for the B – grade football, the team was coached by Mr King. A team was sent to Eastern Reserve for the
annual B-grade netball.
The netball was off to a start at 9:40am, every team determined to win their first game. We were off to start, play-
ing Colac South West. We won that game 14-0.
Our next game was against Elliminyt, it was goal after goal. They had good shooters, so did we. In the end Elliminyt
came out on top.
Our third game was against, Polwarth. This was a tight game, and it was ended in a draw of 2-2. This game was up
and down the court constantly. After this we had a bye, this meant a well-earned rest for the team. Before we were
on court, we set out to warm up, running, grape vine, cut the grass, high bounces. Etc.
Our next game was against Sacred Heart; Sacred Heart was a strong team. We lost against them by a lot. We were a
bit upset by this but we knew this wasn’t the worst.
We had a bye after this game so we could have another break, but this time we were eager to get back on court.
After our bye we were on court again, this time we were playing Saint Mary’s. It was another close game. Birre won
this one by a goal or two.
There was a nerve-racking break while the last games finished up and the officials worked out who was to go
through to the semi-finals.
It felt like ages! Were we into the semi-finals or not? When the last game finished, the loud speaker began crackle
and the crowds fell silent. The C-grade teams were announced, then the B-Grade teams………Birregurra playing Sa-
cred Heart on court 3. We were all squealing with excitement. We were into the semi-finals!
The semi-finals were tough, it was another game that was goal after goal. Sacred Heart would score then we would
score. It wasn’t looking too good in the first, then our secret weapon came on to the court with Luella. Mia Silk! Mia
was playing goal attack. She was shooting goal after goal with Luella. Everyone was in their perfect position. The last
few minutes went by with speed. Then the buzzer went, we had won. The team was kind of dazed. It was a minute
or two later that it hit, we were on to the Grand Final. The grand final was against the rival team: Elliminyt. Could we
defeat them?
The grand final was played with high hopes from each team. A few minutes into the game, a cheer squad of 14
rocked up - the Birre footy team. These guys and girls were going crazy, each time we got hold of the ball. The court
was erupting with cheers and yells. This went on until the game was put to an end. We were winning by several
goals in the first 5 minutes. This was a good start for Birre. At the end of the first half we were ahead with a score of
5-1. Elliminyt was getting worried as we were still shooting ahead. The cheer squad was getting more and more wild
by the minute. With 3 minutes to go the ball was sticking to our side of the court. The few times Elliminyt got their
hands on the ball they would make wild pass, these were getting easier to intercept as the team grew more and
more frantic. And just like that the buzzer went. WE HAD WON!
The presentations were kind of a blur, we were all too happy to notice anything else.
The team was made up of; Remi. G, Luella. H, Phoebe. C, Matilda .G, Alisha. A, Georgia. F, Meah. P, Mia. S and Geor-
gia. R
ITALIANO
Brava Vivienne, e Bravo Angus! Vivienne borrowed a copy
of Lonely Planet Kids First Phrases Italian last week, and
wrote out a double page of phrases in italiano e inglese, in-
cluding greetings, days of the week & numbers!
Angus brought along a bottle of Mutti tomato stir through
sauce. And the students learnt that ‘Parma’ is a city in Italia
– and not just a popular pub meal!
Being aware of connections between our own lives and Italian
language, culture, food, products, music and so on, is an im-
portant part of your child’s learning. It increases their
knowledge, along with their inquisitiveness; e.g. it encourages
them to look at a product that has an Italian flag, to see if it is
actually made in Italia.
Buona giornata – Have a good day!
