According to state law, there are two methods by which police may arrest suspected offenders. The suspect may be physically taken into the department and booked into jail, or the arresting officer may write a citation and release the suspect to appear in court later. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Only criminal citations are listed. All damages are estimates.Mar. 6 Criminal damage to a residence was reported

on the 400 block of Ivanhoe. A window had been broken. Disorderly conduct/domestic violence was also reported at the residence. Theft from a residence was reported on the 300 block of Essex. Theft/fraudulent use of a credit card was reported on the 300 block of Bristol.Mar. 7 Criminal trespass was reported on the 400 block of Greenwich. Ramon Francisco Lorona, 26 of Kearny, was arrested for disorderly conduct/domestic violence and

criminal damage. He was cited and released. Other calls included 11 ambulance runs; one fire call; one welfare check; three open door reports; one 911 hang-up; one residential alarm drop; one information report; and two suspicious person/vehicle/circumstance reports. One citation was issued for dog at large and verbal warnings included one for a parking violation and one for an illegal U-turn. Six vehicles were red-tagged for residential parking violations.

FLORENCE, AZ – Some property owners in Pinal County thought that they would receive an affidavit along with their notices of property valuation that were mailed last week. The affidavit would require anyone with more than one residence to declare a primary residence. Today there are two bills, Senate Bill 1217 and House

Bill 2486 seeking to do away with the requirement. If both bills fail, the affidavits would be sent in 2013, not this year. Pinal County Assessor Paul Larkin said that he and other county assessors were concerned about people missing the affidavits, having the residents get a suddenly higher bill and then having to correct the problem after the fact.

“If someone accidentally failed to fill out and return the affidavit declaring their house as the primary residence, they might find that their taxes go up unexpectedly. That’s because Arizona taxpayers can get a tax rebate up to $600 on their primary residence,” Pinal County Assessor Paul Larkin said. “Our goal is to avoid the

Primary residence affidavit not required this year, not sent with valuations

Morris Land & Cattle Co, Kearny, Arizona, owns one bull listed in the Spring 2012 Sire Evaluation Report published by the American Angus Association® in Saint Joseph, Missouri. National Cattle Evaluation (NCE) expected progeny differences (EPDs) are now generated on a weekly basis; however a biannual report is still printed. Issued in both the spring and fall, the Sire Evaluation Report features the latest performance information available on 4,800 sires, and is currently accessible at www.angus.org. “This report provides both Angus breeders and commercial cattle producers using Angus genetics with accurate, predictable selection tools for improving their herd,” says Bill Bowman, American Angus Association chief operating offi cer (COO) and director of performance programs. EPDs are generated from the performance database of the American Angus Association, which includes information submitted by more 8,000 Angus breeders this past year through the Association’s Beef Improvement Records (BIR)

By Nolberto Waddell The Hayden Lobo baseball team had three games scheduled last week with two on the road and a home contest against their rivals. The Lobos split the road games and had a big home win. The Lobos traveled to San Carlos to take on the Braves baseball team with Matt Manriquez on the mound for the Lobos. With Manriquez turning in a good game on the mound, the game for all purposes was won by the Lobos in the first inning. The Lobos had five hits to open the first inning with Erik Rivera starting things with a double followed by a triple by Adrian Ochoa, a home run by Thomas Cabrera, a double by Roman Padilla and a single by Manriquez produced four runs. A walk, two outs and another walk brought the top of the order again and the hot bats. Rivera hit another double, Ochoa had another triple, Cabrera only had a single and another double by Padilla produced six more runs for 10 runs in the top of the first inning. The Braves scored a run in the bottom of the second to give Hayden a 10 to 1 lead after one inning. The second inning was quiet as the Lobos went down in order and the Braves had a runner on with a walk but could not advance him. The Lobos scored a single run in the third on a hit by Gabriel Encinas and a hit by Cabrera for an 11 to 1 lead when Manriquez held the Braves scoreless in the third. The Lobos scored another run in the top of the fourth on a hit by Marcos Gonzales and a double by Rodney Ortiz, but the Braves got the run back on three hits off a Manriquez pitch in the bottom of the fourth to give Hayden a 12 to 2 lead. The Lobos had another run in the fifth with two walks and a hit by Manriquez but the Braves

got to Manriquez for three runs in the bottom of the fifth to cut the Lobo lead to 13 to 5. The Lobos went down quietly in the sixth and the Braves cut a little into the Lobo lead scoring a single run in the sixth to give Hayden a 13 to 6 lead. The Lobos scored a single run in the seventh with hits by Padilla and Manriquez. The Braves had a lead-off double in the seventh but Manriquez settled down to end the game with a pop-up and two strikeouts for the 14 to 6 win. The Lobos were on the Superior Panther diamond on Thursday, March 8, for a JV-varsity doubleheader. The Lobos took the JV contest with a 15 to 10 score but were unable to get to the Panther varsity for a win. In the varsity contest, Thomas Cabrera took the mound for the Lobos and he and his counterpart were unable to hold the offenses. The Lobos got to the Panther starter for two runs in the top of the first on a walk to Rivera, a single by Ochoa and a two RBI double by Padilla. The Panthers responded with four runs on four hits and a walk to take a 2 to 4 lead after one inning. Lobo bats answered in the top of the second. Ortiz opened with a hit and after a ground out, a hit by Rivera and a triple by Ochoa produced two runs. Ochoa scored on a double by Cabrera and after a fly out, Cabrera scored on a single by Manriquez. Manriquez scored on a hit by Gonzales before the top half of the second inning went into the books with the Lobos ahead 7 to 4. It would be as close as the Lobos would get. The Panther bats responded with five runs in the bottom of the second on a hit batter, three walks and three hits to take a 7 to 9 lead at the end of two innings. A pitching change by the Panthers quieted the Lobo bats the rest of the game going down in order

Lobo diamondmen lose to Panthers, defeat Braves, Bearcatsin the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings while the Panther offense got to Cabrera for two runs in the third and three in the fourth for the 7 to 14 lead and held on for the win over the Lobos. Friday was a big game taking on the A.I.A. ranked Bearcats of Ray High School. Matt Manriquez was called on for the pitching assignment against the Bearcats and he responded with an outstanding game. The Bearcats threatened in the top of the first getting the first two batters on getting hit by a pitch but Manriquez settled down getting the side out on a groundout fielder’s choice, a fly out and another ground out. The Lobos got lead-off batter Rivera on in the first but could not bring him around for a scoreless first inning. Manriquez struck out the side in the top of the second but the Ray pitcher returned the favor also striking out the side for a 0 to 0 score after two innings. The Bearcats scored the first run of the game in the top of the third on a couple of hits and a walk but the Lobo bats answered with four runs in the third. Rodney Ortiz opened the third with a single, Gabriel Encinas walked and both scored on a hit by Erik Rivera who was caught at second trying to stretch a single into a double for one out. With one out, Ochoa and

Cabrera got on base with singles and both scored on a hit by Manriquez before the inning ended to give Hayden a 4 to 1 lead after three innings. Manriquez got his second wind putting down the Bearcats in order in the top of the fourth and the Lobos bats put the game away in the bottom of the fourth scoring six runs when Steven Butler opened with a walk and after two outs, a double by Rivera, a single by Ochoa, Cabrera got hit by a pitch, a single by Padilla, a triple by Manriquez and a single by Gonzales produced the six runs before the final out was made in the fourth inning with the Lobos now in the lead with a 10 to 1 score. Manriquez got the side out on three fly balls to left field in the fifth inning and the Lobos got the lead-off single by Ortiz in the fifth but could not bring him around. Manriquez again held the Bearcats in order in the sixth protecting the nine run lead. The Lobos got a double by Padilla and a walk by Gonzales in the sixth but again stranded them there. The Bearcats made some noise in the top of the seventh when a walk and two hits produced a run but Manriquez settled down and shut down the Bearcats bats for the 10 to 2 victory over the Bearcats. Manriquez got the pitching win giving up the two runs on six hits, walked two and hit

three batters. Manriquez recorded seven strikeouts. On offense, Rodney Ortiz had two singles in three at bats and scored one run, Adrian Ochoa had two singles in four at bats and scored two runs, Erik Rivera had a single and a double in four at bats and scored a run, Thomas Cabrera had a single in three trips to the plate scored two runs and got hit by a pitch, Roman Padilla walked, scored a run and had a single and a double in three at bats, Marcos Gonzales had a single

and a walk and Matthew Manriquez to go with his outstanding pitching had a single and a triple scored a run in four at bats. The Lobos will be up against two very good teams this week traveling to San Manuel yesterday for a JV-varsity doubleheader against the Miners. The Lobos will be on the road again traveling to Tucson on Friday, March 16, for another JV-varsity doubleheader against the Lions of Pusch Ridge Christian Academy starting at 2 p.m.

Macular Degeneration?

By Rosalind Padilla Those who attended the Women’s Expo had a chance to win excellent prizes and the gift bags were unique. The vendors had a lot to offer starting off with Carol Hosler’s collection of dresses from Cameroon, Africa. Speakers and booths showed the empowerment of women in the workforce. The Pioneer Days queen contestants presented themselves throughout the evening as they modeled casual wear, western wear and formal wear – all donated by La Cheveaux of Tucson. Each girl also had to go to the Hand Me Up Shop and/or ARC Thrift Shop and redesign an outfit and model it. Each girl then gave a speech entitled, “Why I wanted to run for Pioneer Days Queen and what I can do for my community.” Joyleign Wormwood did the girls’ makeup and their hair was done by Hope Kame and Shelly Huerta. In between clothing

changes, Copper Basin Idols Gabrielle Montano and Julianna Borquez and the 2012 Idol hopefuls (who will be performing during Pioneer Days) entertained the audience. All of these events are practice before the contest in May.Pioneer Days If you want a Pioneer Days t-shirt you must preorder at the Chamber office before Friday, March 16. The shirts are gray and have a local hiking trail, Copper Basin Railway engine, an Arizona flag and colors on an Arizona map which features every railroad track in Arizona. Each shirt is $12 adding $1 for every additional X. If any are available after the presales are delivered, the price will be $15. Have you seen Rex Gennicks who entered the beard contest clean shaven? Those with full beards, Jerry Kauffold, Mike Dinwiddie, John Simon and Daniel Avenetti, are awaiting your vote. The winners will be

announced on Thursday, March 29, just before the Queens are announced. There will be a People’s Choice, so come early and check out the beards. The vote is by audience participation. Anonymous judges have been checking these guys out and about town Carnival presale tickets can be purchased at Cosmic Coffee or Pretty Petals, or from Nancy Hinojos at the Hayden Town Hall or Gloria Ruiz at the Winkelman Town Hall. Wrist bands are $15 with eight tabs and a sheet of 40 for $25 and may be purchased at these places until Friday, March 23. Parade entries can be picked up at the Kearny Town Hall. Use your imagination and enter your car, truck, bicycle, motorcycle, ATV or enter as a walking group using a part of the theme or all of it (Arizona celebrating 100 years with Rails and Trails). The Copper Thimbles Quilt Show will open

Just before Christmas, the members drew numbers and received projects that Bea had started. Members have completed her unfinished projects which will be on display. Arizona Quilts plus many more will be featured. Glenda O Hara, Nancy Koch and Dona Witwer and members have a great show planned for you. R & R Productions, Rene Arbizo and Rudy Clark, bring team roping to the General Kearny Posse Grounds located just beyond Pioneer Park. These local cowboys have a good following of team ropers from all over the state. If you have never seen team roping, there is a header who catches the head and the heeler who catches the two back feet; they aim for the quickest time. One leg catch brings

a five-second penalty, breaking the barrier is a 10-second penalty. When done correctly it is a very artistic presentation. Drop by and cheer the cowboys on. If watching softball is your thing, drop by the Little League field and watch teams, again from all over the state and of all ages. Pioneer Days is reunion time whether it is families or class reunions. It has been a tradition for more than 50 years that people gather in Kearny for Pioneer Days. You

never know who you will see. The Elks is the host for the horseshoe contest with signup at 11:30 a.m. Saturday immediately after the parade. Ron Buckley, who is a horse shoe competitor, is in charge of this contest. Rotary will serve Steaks at the GKI Patio on Saturday evening. If you have not read this month’s Nugget, try to find a copy and check out all the activities going on in the Copper Corridor. There is something for every one to do. And mark Pioneer Days on your calendar, March 29-April 1.

By Steve YurekPastor, Kearny SBC This past Sunday night we introduced our new praise and worship team – “Walking – 180” at the New and Exciting – Kearny SBC. These three dedicated individuals not only have a GREAT sound they have a heart for serving the Lord! You could say we are rocking the world (or at least Kearny). This is what you would call a ‘non-typical’ service at 6pm on Sunday nights. It does not matter what denomination you are – ALL are invited to join us Sunday nights at 6pm for a time of great music with a time of study of God’s Word afterwards. You may have seen all the activity around Kearny SBC the past few weeks. We have combined the youth at Fellowship Baptist and

Kearny SBC and moved the youth room to Kearny SBC. The youth now have four times the space with a pool table, air hockey and a dedicated area just for the youth to study and hang out. Garret Pitner is our Youth Leader and we thank him for his Godly direction! For more information about Fellowship Baptist Church’s youth program drop me a line or feel free to give Fellowship or Kearny SBC a call. Mark your calendars! Starting this Friday - March 16th at 7pm we will be starting – “FRIDAY NIGHT AT THE MOVIES” at Kearny SBC. Every Friday night we will be showing a free family friendly (try saying that fast ten times) movie on our ‘JesusTron’ big screen. We

may not have surround sound, but it still sounds pretty good. There will be concessions available provided by the youth group at Fellowship Baptist. Sit in the comfort of our padded chairs, enjoy your favorite theatre snack and soda while watching a great free movie with your family and friends. Starting March 16th at 7pm! See the posters downtown for a listing of the movies we will be showing. This Friday we will be showing Mr. Poppers Penguins on the ‘JesusTron’. Mr. Popper, a successful real estate developer in Manhattan, receives a curious gift from his late father: a penguin. Soon enough, he

receives five more penguins while attempting to get rid of the first one and a tale of family, friendship and commitment ensues. Bring the kids, bring your husband or boyfriend, bring your wife or girlfriend! Bring the whole family (but please leave the dog at home). I am still picking up large items like stoves, fridges and anything metal for recycling. Just give me a call at 520-363-9573 to schedule a time for me to pick up. Our next ‘Great Kearny Clean-up’ is scheduled for next month – April! Mark your calendars it will be on the second Saturday in April. Show your pride and help keep our city looking good. By Georgie Wood([email protected]) According to Callie Branden-burg’s memoirs, after the Civil War her father built a new house on the foundation where the Yan-kees had burned their Arkansas home to the ground, and then in 1870 the family went to a new home on land they had bought at Viney Grove, Arkansas. Cal-lie said that after arriving from school on Fridays, she did wash-ing on the wooden scrub board for ten people; on Saturdays

she mopped seven rooms while the clothes dried on a line; then ironed until twelve o’clock at night; and after getting up early the next morning, she milked four cows and helped get breakfast before trying to get to Sunday School on time. She did have a few boyfriends before meeting James W. Bran-denburg who was sixteen years older than herself, and who she called Jim. She thought “he was as handsome a man as ever sat a horse”. When he had been in the

Confederate Army, he had been taken prisoner when he was twen-ty-one years old, after which he was on the Rebel parole list that traded a certain number of men on each side. Callie stated “All the relatives thought I would make a fine homemaker, but I always wanted to be a milliner or a dress-maker, but I couldn’t so rather than work myself to death at home, I decided to get married”. Callie was twenty years old when she and James W. Brandenburg were married in 1873, after which

Georgie Digs ...farming was their livelihood, so there was still lots of work to do! Callie stated “Well, we worked hard but still went to church every Sunday”. Callie and her husband had two young sons, Jim and William, when they decided to move with relatives to California in 1877. They shipped their household goods, and took their provisions and bedding with them on the im-migrant train for thirteen days and nights. I imagine their household goods had been shipped by wag-on, and the immigrant train had consisted of a bunch of wagons. In California, they farmed again until they decided to sell out and go to Arizona. That trip, made with others in covered wagons, was a long one and well described in Callie’s memoirs. Her descrip-tion of Phoenix was “It was a little one-horse-town, two stores, an adobe mill, a stage stand and a bandstand where there was music every night; and there were a few

shacks and the fields were green in alfalfa”. It was in 1881 when they de-cided to settle in Pinal, Arizona where at first James Brandenburg with his wagon and team started freighting from Phoenix and Casa Grande to Pinal which was south-west of Globe, then he started working at the mill where the ore came from the nearby Silver King Mine. Callie had kept busy in her fruit store, and there were cows to milk, chickens to tend to, garden work, and the planting of many fruit trees. Two more children, May and Robert, had been born, and after the mill shut down in 1888, the Brandenburgs headed to Aravaipa Creek. They crossed a bridge over the Gila River at Florence, then had to cross the

San Pedro River which was in flood stage. I presume that San Pedro River crossing was reached after traveling on the stage road from Florence through Cotton-wood to the Old Camp Grant site at the mouth of Aravaipa Creek. When they came to Aravaipa Creek, they had to work their way upstream because the creek had been up. Gee, that sure sounds familiar!

In Loving Memory of Jacob Gomez IT WONT BE LONG You said before you died, that I was the key to your heart. But the truth is you were mine. I ask the Lord above, to answer my prayers. That you would come back. But, that wouldn’t be fair. I now know that you’re happy where you are. Safe in the arms of Jesus, without any cares. But I want you to know, that I still love you so. And I’ll go on living for Him, Knowing that His light will never dim. Someday together we’ll be. But, until then, the Lord will take care of me. It won’t be long. That from this world, I’ll be gone. Into your arms once again. Safe from all the worldly harm. Love always, Your wife, Queta. W 3/14 1TP
