FY12

As I reflect on everything we have accomplished this year, it is clear that your

personal commitment has had a ripple effect on our work both locally and

globally. You know what Harvard Medical School stands for, what we have

accomplished, and what we aspire to accomplish. And you understand the role

HMS has played and must continue to play in the future of biomedicine and

health care in the United States and around the world.

After 34 years on the faculty and five years as Dean, I have never been more

excited about what we can and will accomplish to improve human health.

This year, thanks to your support, we attacked our highest-priority areas—

education, discovery, and service—with skill and passion.

We were again ranked by U.S. News & World Report as the top medical school

in the country. The caliber of our students is clear from the vast number

who matched to leading residencies and programs again this year. And to

help assure our graduates’ debt does not deter them from reaching their full

potential, we increased financial aid by more than 10 percent.

When it comes to discovery, HMS represents the largest and most effective

biomedical research engine in the world. This year, we implemented a bold

plan to strengthen this scientific engine by investing in the most promising

areas, encouraging deeper collaboration across departments and the University

as a whole, and designing novel programs that will impact the world.

Our commitment to building health equity and goodwill around the globe has

never been stronger. Working closely with the Rwandan Ministry of Health,

our faculty presented a Global Health Delivery course that addresses the

challenges of delivering health services in resource-poor settings. This may

prove to be a model for future global health education efforts. We have also

launched a new master’s degree program in global health delivery. The first

such program in the world, we expect it to be transformative for our students,

faculty, and the emerging field.

It is indeed an exciting time at Harvard Medical School. I am honored to have

you as a partner.

With profound thanks,

Jeffrey S. Flier, MD

FY12

Thank you for your continued support of Harvard Medical School. In fiscal

year 2012, nearly 4,000 friends and alumni gave $62 million, making a tangible

impact on our work to alleviate human suffering caused by disease.

We are fortunate that our circle of supporters from the community-at-large

continued to expand this year, as we welcomed new friends to our constituency

of alumni, volunteers, faculty, staff, corporations, and foundations.

I am happy you will have a chance to get to know some of these generous

individuals and organizations as you read through this Honor Roll of Donors.

Among them are Bruce and Linda Cohen, whose generous charitable gift

annuity will advance medical education, and Irene Luria, whose gift annuity

has established an endowed scholarship in memory of her husband, Sidney, an

alumnus of HMS.

In the area of discovery, Ghahreman Khodadad and his family foundation are

supporting research into aggressive, selfish behavior, while Fondation Bertarelli

is amplifying its support of translational medicine. The exploration of human

origins has been expanded with an anonymous gift, while a gift from the Leona

M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust is advancing innovative research into

Crohn’s disease. And support from the G. Harold & Leila Y. Mathers Foundation

explores the effects of the circadian clock.

Thank you for your generosity and ongoing commitment to Harvard Medical

School. Together we are advancing the fields of science and medicine and

helping people live longer, healthier lives.

With heartfelt thanks,

Three questions for Bruce & Linda Cohen

Charitable gift annuity advances medical education

While on a cruise together in 1979, a light bulb went off. We envisioned

continuing professional education seminars being held in conjunction with

cruises, far away from the distractions of peoples’ busy offices. The idea soon

became a reality, and International Conferences was born. What began with

one seminar to the Mediterranean soon grew to more than 24 annually on six

continents for more than 20,000 physicians, nurses, dentists, and attorneys

by the time we sold the company in 2006.

Continuing medical education was very good to us for 27 years, so we wanted

to give back to the field of medicine. We were looking for a prestigious

institution with a fine reputation for teaching and research, a superior faculty,

and a strong endowment. We found that at Harvard Medical School.

We would like to see advances in the prevention and treatment of

Alzheimer’s Disease.

$3 million gift supports the study of excessive (pathological)

selfi shness and aggressive behavior

WHAT PIqUED YOUR INTEREST

IN ScIENcE AND MEDIcINE?

I’ve always been fascinated by the anatomy of the brain and how this organ

controls human behavior. In my youth, I spent a summer working in a

psychiatric hospital, and this experience made a huge impression on me,

inspiring my career in neuroscience.

For years I’ve been searching for an institution studying excessive,

pathological selfi shness and aggressive behavior. After speaking with

members of the HMS community, and learning about the research taking

place at the School, my sons, Victor and Rhazi, and I knew supporting HMS

was a way for our family foundation to make a difference.

WHY HARvARD MEDIcAL ScHOOL?

WHAT MAjOR HEALTH cARE

Selfi shness and aggression infl ict so much pain on humanity.

They impact society as a whole—victims and their loved ones,

witnesses, and participants. I’d like to uncover how these behaviors

are produced so we can fi nd ways to decrease their frequency.

Generous gift creates the Fund for Research on Human Origins

Winston Churchill said that the

farther back you can look, the farther

forward you are likely to see. Perhaps

no one understands that more

than David Reich, PhD, professor of

Genetics at Harvard Medical School,

whose research focuses on the

interface of disease gene mapping

and human evolutionary history.

Reich uses population mixture as

a tool for learning about human

biology. He is also the leading U.S.

researcher on using DNA to study

human history. In recent years, he

and international teams of genetic

researchers have discovered an

extinct group of humans, offered

the fi rmest proof yet that humans

interbred with Neanderthals, and

completed the world’s most detailed

human genetic map to date.

This groundbreaking work has not

only garnered public interest and

broad media attention, but it recently

inspired a generous gift from an

anonymous donor supporting Reich’s

deeper exploration of human origins.

“There has been a disconnect between

the importance of our work and

funding for it,” says Reich. “We are

thankful to the visionary private donor

who stepped forward to fi ll that void.”

$1.8 million gift supports research grants for innovative

translational medicine

WHAT PIqUED YOUR INTEREST

IN ScIENcE AND MEDIcINE?

Our family has been deeply involved in the life sciences for three generations,

and so a commitment to science and innovation is at the heart of our heritage.

WHY HARvARD MEDIcAL ScHOOL? The best ideas come to fruition when you create teams with diverse

backgrounds. We forged a partnership between HMS and École Polytechnique

Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland and created the Bertarelli

Program in Translational Neuroscience and Neuroengineering to collaborate

on projects and explore innovative solutions to a range of sensory and motor

problems, such as hearing loss. Since studying at Harvard, I have remained

involved with the school and I also have close ties with EPFL. I thought it would

be an interesting idea to bring both facilities and faculties together to join

forces in common projects, where each entity could contribute with its own

core competencies: the Neuroengineering developments for EPFL and the

experience in medical application to patients for HMS.

WHAT MAjOR HEALTH cARE

We need to apply the groundbreaking research that is happening today into

the development and clinical application of devices that improve human life

for neurological disabilities affecting hearing, vision, or mobility. There have

been huge advances in our basic understanding of the brain and the senses,

and our focus now is to translate it into therapeutic treatment through

neurological stimulation and implanted devices (neuroprosthetics).

$1 million gift supports the Harvard/MIT MD-PhD Program

WHAT PIqUED YOUR INTEREST

IN THE HARvARD/MIT MD-PHD

PROgRAM?

When I attended HMS in the 1970s, there was no program to support medical

students who also wanted to pursue basic science research. The course I

charted by combining the two areas has proved invaluable to me throughout my

career, first as a physician and then in the development of cardiovascular drugs.

The MD-PhD Program provides a unique opportunity for students to get a

world-class medical education while combining research training alongside

the premier investigators at Harvard University and the Massachusetts

Institute of Technology.

WHY HARvARD MEDIcAL ScHOOL?

WHAT MAjOR HEALTH cARE

I would like to see every tumor genomically sequenced and a library of

many corresponding novel cancer therapeutics available to target the driver

mutations, singly and in combination. The physician-scientists trained

through the MD-PhD Program will help accomplish this.

WHAT PIqUED YOUR INTEREST

IN ScHOLARSHIP?

I like to see deserving students get an education who may not be able

to afford one on their own. Harvard Medical School is the best, and it’s a

privilege for anyone to be able to continue their education there. I hope my

support will help the most talented people go to HMS.

My husband, Sidney, graduated in 1943 and always spoke highly of HMS and

his time there. It was his desire to give back, and we always agreed that giving to

the School was a priority. Sidney’s fond memories of HMS made establishing a

charitable gift annuity an easy decision.

WHAT MAjOR HEALTH cARE

ADvANcE WOULD YOU LIkE TO

I would love to see improvements in nutrition. Poor nutrition contributes to

heart disease, diabetes, and poor-functioning kidneys, to name a few issues.

I think our society should become more knowledgeable on the nutrients they

take in to reduce diseases and obesity.

giving BacK: lee pays forWard the gift of education

As a young woman, Yeu-Tsu Margaret

Lee, MD ’61, fl ed the Japanese

invasion of China and later moved

with her family to Taiwan. She

dreamed of becoming a doctor as a

way to serve humanity. An important

step toward achieving this goal was

her training at Harvard Medical

School, which was made possible

with the help of scholarships and

fi nancial aid.

“Harvard opened doors for me, and I

wanted to give something back,” she

says. Now a semi-retired surgeon,

Lee has participated in medical

missions around the world, including

North Africa, Central America, and

Southeast Asia. She also serves as a

visiting professor of surgery at Tzu-

Chi Buddhist University in Taiwan.

A member of the Ezekiel Hersey

Council, Lee established a $250,000

charitable gift annuity (CGA)

at HMS. This is Lee’s fourth life

income gift to HMS and it is a smart

fi nancial planning decision on her

part—providing her with guaranteed

income for life and tax benefi ts—and

it has also allowed her to pay forward

the gift of a medical education to

today’s students.

The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust

$3.2 million gift fuels research into Crohn’s disease

Leona and Harry Helmsley were

well-known as entrepreneurs. They

were also recognized for their

commitment to philanthropy. It was

no surprise then that Mrs. Hemsley

bequeathed nearly her entire

fortune to the Leona M. and Harry B.

Helmsley Charitable Trust, creating

a legacy that continues to enhance

the lives of millions. Their indelible

mark can be felt at Harvard Medical

School, where the trust has recently

given more than $3.2 million to fuel

research on Crohn’s disease.

This marks the second such gift

supporting the Helmsley Pilot Grants

Program, established with an initial

gift of $2.2 million from the trust

in 2010. According to Laurence

Turka, MD, co-director of the

Harvard Institute for Translational

Immunology (HITI) and professor of

medicine at HMS, the impact of this

unique program is palpable.

“The Helmsley Pilot Grants Program

in Crohn’s Disease allows Harvard

to tackle a devastating illness, one

that can affect people for their entire

lives,” says Turka. “It has allowed

us to bring people together in new

ways to create a strong, pan-Harvard

community of researchers, working

to bring their collective expertise to

bear on this disease.”

The G. Harold & Leila Y. Mathers Foundation

$1 million gift advances research into the mammalian circadian clock

The G. Harold & Leila Y. Mathers

Foundation supports basic research

in the life sciences and provides

support for promising projects

from established researchers at

top universities and independent

research institutions, like Harvard

Medical School.

This generous gift provides Charles

J. Weitz, MD, PhD, the Robert Henry

Pfeiffer Professor of Neurobiology at

Harvard Medical School, three years

of renewed funding to investigate

PERIOD protein complexes—core

genes in the circadian clock—and will

ultimately deepen our understanding

of this fundamental biological timing

system that drives the daily rhythms of

physiology and behavior. Malfunctions

in these rhythms have been linked

to chronic sleep disorders, manic-

depression, and seasonal affective

disorders (SAD or winter depression).

“Despite impressive advances

over the last decade, our present

understanding of the circadian

clock is still rudimentary, and

our knowledge of its molecular

components is very much

incomplete. There are compelling

indications that we are missing major

pieces of the puzzle,” says Weitz.

“We’ve had some successes in our

lab, and support from the Mathers

Foundation allows us to continue our

exploration of—and deconstruction

of—the circadian clock.”

gordons honored With harvard medal

Each year the Harvard Alumni

Association bestows the Harvard

Medal on those who have given

extraordinary service to the

University. Among this year’s

recipients were Ellen, GSA ’69,

and Melvin Gordon ’41, MBA ’43,

who were presented their medals

by President Drew Gilpin Faust,

PhD, as part of the University’s

Commencement Exercises in

Harvard Yard.

The Gordons’ time and talents the

past seven decades have been

palpable across the University and

punctuated by their impact at Harvard

Medical School. Here they have

established a professorship, helped

create the Department of Systems

Biology, funded basic research across

disciplines throughout the Quad, and

renewed the skylights in the signature

campus building, which were blacked

out during World War II.

Ellen Gordon was chair of the

Campaign for the Third Century of

Harvard Medicine in the 1980s and

has been a member of the HMS

Board of Fellows since 1991. The

couple’s generosity was recognized

in 2000 when HMS renamed its

iconic, pillared building the Ellen

R. and Melvin J. Gordon Hall of

Medicine.

Reunion giving

Reunions are great ways to reconnect and give back to Harvard Medical School. Reunion gifts help sustain HMS with critical funding, and these dollars provide Dean jeffrey S. Flier, MD, the flexibility to direct money where it is needed most, including scholarships and financial aid, recruiting faculty, and maintaining world-class research labs.

The 2012 Reunion classes collectively raised more than $1.52 million for the Alumni Fund and more than $3.5 million for a variety of HMS programs.

When Donald Dickerson, MD ’57,

attended Harvard Medical School,

he was thrilled to be part of its

history and culture. Looking back on

that experience, he says that it was

really the people he met—including

his future wife—that had the most

impact on him.

“It was an interesting group of

students with many different

backgrounds,” said Dickerson. “You

never knew what you would discuss

over meals in Vanderbilt Hall.”

Dickerson saw his 55th Reunion

as the perfect time to not only

reconnect with his classmates,

but also to give back. He made a

generous $50,000 gift to the

Alumni Fund and named an

auditorium chair in the Joseph B.

Martin Conference Center, which he

dedicated to his parents.

Dickerson felt it was worthwhile to

support an institution that had given

him so much. “I’m very grateful

for the education I’ve received. It’s

fulfi lled me professionally, personally,

and fi nancially. I felt it was important

to give back.”
