Thank you, Madame Westphal for a great French Week. How lucky is Springfield to have such a fantastic language teacher? If you missed the assembly we had a variety of students speaking, acting and singing to represent the French culture. The colours Blue, White and Red dominated the crowd. We even had Marcel Marceau, Marie Antoinette and a French Waiter at school. I cannot wait for next year. For those who havent been to the school lately there have been quite a few changes and additions in and around our buildings. The external paint job and signage gives our school a fresh clean look. The flag poles are finally in place outside our undercover area. You will soon see the Australian, Western Australian and Aboriginal Flags flying proudly. They will look great with that lovely Aboriginal mural as the back drop. Then there is the Yarning Circle”! This is an amazing area created by a group of hard working Springfield members. (See photos attached). A yarning circle is a harmonious, creative and collaborative way of communicating to: encourage responsible, respectful and honest interactions between participants, building trusting relationships, foster accountability and provide a safe place to be heard and to respond. Thanks to Mrs Webb (The Co-ordinator), Mrs Baker (The Backup), Mr Rayfield (The Muscle Man), Mrs Wardlaw, Mrs Cottam (The diggers and rakers), Mr Brown (The Muscle mans apprentice) and of course our wonderful Year 6 students for designing, creating and building such an amazing feature in our school grounds. Then we add the 6 huge poles representing the 6 Noongar Seasons created by our fantastic visual art teacher Mrs Brown (Pink) and her arty students. Congratulations all of you for creating this space for the Springfield Primary Community. Talk about Working Together Achieving More”, there is no better example. Next time you are at school make sure you take time to have a close look at this area. I think the only thing missing in this area is a bird bath! We will have an official opening of the Yarning Circle next Thursday, the day of Outdoor Classroom Day”. Next Week, especially next Thursday, classes will conduct lessons outside in our beautiful natural surroundings. (Weather permitting!) Learning next to nature, what better way to remind us all how lucky we are to live and learn in such a great place. You may have heard a whistle blowing around the school. No, it is not Mr Messom, its our Pre-Primary Posties. Area 17 & 18 are busy writing and delivering letters to staff and students. If you are lucky to get a letter, make sure you write back the old fashioned way. NO EMAILS!!! We have even had two excursions in the last week. First the Year 1’s visited Kings Park, then the Pre- Primary students walked over to the Whitfords Library for a tour. By all reports a great educational fun time was had by everyone. Halloween Even though Halloween is not a very big deal in Australia, every year it's becoming more and more popular here. It’s believed to have originated at least two thousand years ago in Ireland. Farmers held a festival called Samhain to mark the end of the harvest and the beginning of winter. Back then, the Celts celebrated their new year on the first of November, and the day before was seen as a time when the realms of the living and the dead became blurred so that the dead would be able to walk along with the living. Villagers lit bonfires believing they were warding off evil spirits and dressed up as demons so that if they happened to bump into one, it wouldn't bat an eyelid! Halloween is a fun time for children but it is important to keep the trick or treating safe. Always make sure children are accompanied by an adult or older children stay in a group. If unattended please make sure the children have a planned route and know the safety rules of crossing roads.

One of our parents is again hoping to help the many children in foster/out of home care this Christmas. Please see below and we are happy for you to drop the stocking off here at the office. With over 5,500 children in foster / out of home care in Western Australia alone...there are many kids that will go without this Christmas. Every year the Department of Communities hosts a Foster Carer’s and Children in Care Christmas Party, to say a massive thank you to the AMAZING job foster carers do within our community. The cost of hosting this party is HUGE and is purely funded through donations and fundraising. I have personally committed to fundraising to obtain 140 x Cadbury Christmas Chocolate Stockings (182g $5.00 ea) to ensure that children in foster care within our district have a little something to bring a smile to their face this Christmas.

In the lead up to Christmas, if you could find it in your hearts ♥️ to purchase a Chocolate Stocking (only $5) each time or even every couple of grocery shops and if they can make their way to me at the Department of Communities – 5 Milldale Way Mirrabooka ATTN: Matt Haines [email protected] you will help bring a smile to the dial of kids who need it more than you will ever know. All stockings will be required by the 28th November 2019 Alternatively...you’re welcome to make a donation via the below and I will purchase on your behalf: Commonwealth Bank Children in Care Christmas Drive BSB: 066192 ACC: 10596040 Please use your name as a reference. I also fundraise throughout the year to purchase Christmas Gifts for children in care. We typically spend $30 per child. For this...you are also welcome to donate. Thank you from the bottom of my heart . Matt Haines
