All three B-17s were damaged and were unable to participate in the scheduled mission. Thirty-seven aircraft took off to bomb the marshalling yards at Saarbrucken, Germany. The secondary target was the Aero-engine Works at Woippy, France. No aircraft returned early. Only a few enemy attacks were seen in the distance. There were no attacks on the 303rd BG(H). Friendly fighter support was good. Moderate and extremely accurate flak was met in the target area. Twenty-one aircraft sustained major flak damage and fifteen, minor. There were 2/10 middle clouds and no low clouds in the target area. Visibility was restricted to five to eight miles in a thick haze. Bombing was done from 22,000 and 21,200 feet and 229 1,000 lb. G.P. M44 bombs were dropped with poor results. Restricted visibility made it difficult to sight the primary target. The AFCE in both lead aircraft was knocked out by flak and runs were made visually by PDI. The lead Group was unable to locate the primary target until immediately over it. A second bomb run was attempted, but the target still could not be seen. The Group turned off and bombed the marshalling yards at Volkingen, Germany as a target of opportunity. The low Group did pick up the primary target on its second bomb run, but it was impossible to make a good run because of anti- aircraft fire. #42-97260 Bow-Ur-Neck Stevens, 360BS, piloted by Capt. Long forced his aircraft back into formation for the second bomb run by straining his three remaining engines. Just after the bombs were released, another flak burst tore the No. 3 engine and propeller off the plane, throwing it completely out of control. It flipped over on its back and went down in a dive. It pulled out of this dive and almost immediately went into another. Four parachutes were spotted, but the aircraft was lost in the haze as it went down and was not seen to hit the ground. Capt. Long, 2Lt. Wilbur V. Gee, 1Lt. Joseph F. Fahlbusch, T/Sgt. Clarence G. Wilson, T/Sgt. Oscar Villasenor, S/Sgt. Frank C. Logan, S/Sgt. Albert J. Ledley, and S/Sgt. Mace Henson were killed. Capt. buried in Ardennes American Cemetery near Liege, Belgium. T/Sgt. Wilson is buried inLorraine American Cemetery near Moselle, France. 1Lt. Henry S. Przybyszewski, Capt.Robert P. Livingston and S/Sgt. Anthony T. Orlando were captured and taken prisoner.

1Lt. Anthony J. Cecchini's B-17 #42-107147 Sweet Melody, 360BS, returned fullof holes. Flak knocked out the navigator's oxygen and one outboard engine and blew offone of the bomb bay doors on the second bomb run. Lt. Cecchini left the formation, struggling to maintain altitude. At 11,000 feet anti-aircraft guns opened up and Lt.Cecchini dove his bomber toward the ground at 300 mph. He ordered his crew to moveforward of the bomb bay to maintain aircraft balance and to jettison all excess equipment.Flying at tree top level at 125 I.A.S., the crew experienced German 88mm gunfire from aground pill box that injured four crewmen. Lt. Cecchini passed through German coastaldefenses and flew very low across the water to the English coast. The crew located anRAF training field at Southend-on-Sea on the Thames Estuary. Making a hot, two-enginelanding, the two pilots avoided a concrete ammo building, crashed through a fence, losttheir landing gear and bellied into a ditch that stopped the Fortress. All crewmen survivedthe difficult and skillful crash landing. Lt. Cecchini, 2Lt. Edward J. Veigel and Sgt. WardA. Hudson were hospitalized at Southend-on-Sea 1st General Hospital at St. Albans.S/Sgt. Benjamin H. Smith, Jr., was slightly injured.

On #42-107196 360BS Temptress, piloted by 1Lt. Amon Earhart, both the pilot'sand co-pilot's control cables were damaged, the number two engine's hydraulic line wasshattered and the IFF radio equipment smashed. Radio Operator T/Sgt. Eddie Deerfieldwas wounded in the face when a flak burst penetrated the radio room.

Empress of D Street #42-37875 427BS, seemed to be under a dark cloud and waslabeled as a "jinx." Sgt. Allen, the crew chief at the time, re-named her "Flying Bison" inhopes that the "jinx" label would be removed from his B-17. However, this proved not tobe the case, as will be shown later.

IT WASN’T BERLIN— BUT IT WAS AS ROUGH AS IT GETS!11 MAY 1944 — MISSION # 151

    Ed Miller’s Memories and Recollections

When you drag a wing of B-17s (60 aircraft) across the target two times, someoneis bound to get shot down. And they did — my good friend 1Lt Johnnie Long and hiscrew. But there were more beat up aircraft that returned to England today than in anyprevious mission. Of the two Groups that were dispatched by the 303rd Bomb Group (atotal of 37 aircraft), twenty-one received “major damage.” And fifteen received “minordamage.” That is thirty six of the 37 and one didn’t come home at all — Johnnie Long’saircraft.

My tail gunner, Sgt Kenneth A. Elmore said it very succinctly — “Back in the tail,I couldn’t see a thing because of the flak smoke. It got so bad you could see it, smell itand feel it.”

The target for our Low Group was the Marshalling Yards at Saarbrucken, Germanyand this was considerably different type of mission that the previous ones. The reasonwas that we didn’t take off until almost 3:30 pm in the afternoon and we didn’t drop ourbombs until after 7:00 pm in the evening.

I was flying in the number 6 position in aircraft # 42-97590 “Virgin Mary” with 2LtMax Christian as my co-pilot and his crew. He had been grounded for several days dueto a bad case of tonsilitis and this was his first mission. I had served as the pilot for hiscrew for the past three missions. We were in the lead squadron which was lead by MajorWalter K. Shayler and 1Lt Fred F. Wilson. In the number 6 position, I could see theleader of the low squadron, 1Lt John Long, which was flying almost abreast of me. I didn’tsee Johnnie go down so it must have been the first flak burst that knocked out his number2 engine. I did realize that he fell out of formation but I was busy flying formation andstaying in tight to make sure we had a good bomb drop. It was on the second bomb runover the target that he was hit again, by flak that broke off a wind and turned the aircraftupside down.

Flying as Radio Operator with Johnnie Long, was one of our former crewmembers, T/Sgt Oscar Villasenor. Oscar had flown with us since we formed our crew atAlexandria AFB, Louisiana in October 1943. For reasons unknown to me, Tommydecided to replace him when we arrived at Molesworth. He was one of the unfortunateones that was unable to get out of the aircraft before it exploded.

When you get back home and go to debriefing, knowing that you had probably losta good friend and also knowing that there were so many aircraft that were hit by flak andmany times, with eleven crew members being wounded, it becomes a very “draining”debriefing. It was one of my roughest missions and for Max Christian to be on his firstmission, it gave him a sense of what was to come. He never did finish his tour ofmissions, and this was the case with a few more of his crew.
