THE ENDLESS TASK

In today’s first reading the early Christians are described as having “no needy person among them” (Acts 4:34). This worked because the wealthy shared with the poorer members whom they knew and with whom they worshiped. In churches today people only know some of their fellow parishioners, and may be unaware of people’s job loss, medical bills, home foreclosure, or other crisis. Some of us have “compassion fatigue.” The problems reported in the media overwhelm us, so we withdraw. The cure for compassion fatigue is to commit ourselves to serve in any way we can. Thousands of people today are serving, caring for, and comforting “the needy among them.” Natural disasters, economic downturns, and personal suffering are inevitable. Jesus expects us to commit our time, abilities, and financial resources to the continuing, unglamorous, sometimes thankless task of serving others as if we were serving him. On the Last Day, that is all he will ask us about (Matthew 25:31–46).

UNA TAREA INTERMINABLE

En la primera lectura de hoy se describe a los cristianos como creyentes que “vivían unidos y lo tenían todo en común” (Hechos 4:34). Algunos de nosotros padecemos de “fatiga de compasión”. Los problemas que nos reportan los medios de comunicación nos apabullan y la reacción inmediata es retraernos. La cura para la fatiga de compasión es comprometernos a servir en lo que podamos. Millares de personas hoy día sirven, cuidan y consuelan a los más pobres, “según las necesidades de cada uno”. Los desastres naturales, los declives económicos y los sufrimientos personales son inevitables. Jesús espera el compromiso de nuestro tiempo, nuestras habilidades y nuestros recursos económicos para la simple, interminable y muchas veces ingrata tarea de servir a los demás como si lo estuviéramos sirviendo personalmente a él. (Juan 20:28) De una homilía del Papa Francisco para el Domingo de la Divina Misericordia, 7 de abril de 2013: “En el evangelio de hoy, el apóstol Tomás experimenta personalmente la misericordia de Dios, que tiene un rostro concreto, el rostro de Jesús, el Jesús resucitado. Tomás no lo cree cuando los otros apóstoles le dicen: "Hemos visto al Señor" (Juan 20:25). No le basta con que Jesús lo haya predicho. . . . Quiere ver; quiere poner su mano en el lugar de los clavos y en el costado de Jesús. “¿Y cómo reacciona Jesús? Con paciencia: Jesús no abandona a Tomás en su obstinada incredulidad; le da una semana de tiempo, no cierra la puerta, espera. Y Thomas reconoce su propia pobreza, su poca fe. “¡Señor mío y Dios mío!” (Juan 20:28). Con esta simple pero llena de fe, responde a la paciencia de Jesús. Se deja envolver por la divina misericordia; lo ve ante sus ojos, en las heridas de las manos y los pies de Cristo y en su costado abierto, y descubre la confianza: es un hombre nuevo, ya no incrédulo, sino creyente. . . . “Quizás alguien entre nosotros aquí esté pensando: mi pecado es tan grande, estoy tan lejos de Dios como el hijo menor de la parábola, mi incredulidad es como la de Tomás; No tengo el valor de volver atrás, de creer que Dios me puede acoger y que me está esperando, entre todas las personas. From a homily by Pope Francis for Divine Mercy Sunday, April 7, 2013:

“In today’s Gospel, the apostle Thomas personally experiences the mercy of God, which has a concrete face, the face of Jesus, the risen Jesus. Thomas does not believe it when the other apostles tell him, ‘We have seen the Lord’ (John 20:25). It isn’t enough for him that Jesus had foretold it. . . . He wants to see; he wants to put his hand in the place of the nails and in Jesus’ side.

“And how does Jesus react? With patience: Jesus does not abandon Thomas in his stubborn unbelief; he gives him a week’s time, he does not close the door, he waits. And Thomas acknowledges his own poverty, his little faith.

“‘My Lord and my God!’ (John 20:28). With this simple yet faith-filled invocation, he responds to Jesus’ patience. He lets himself be enveloped by divine mercy; he sees it before his eyes, in the wounds of Christ’s hands and feet and in his open side, and he discovers trust: he is a new man, no longer an unbeliever, but a believer. . . .

“Maybe someone among us here is thinking: my sin is so great, I am as far from God as the younger son in the parable, my unbelief is like that of Thomas; I don’t have the courage to go back, to believe that God can welcome me and that he is waiting for me, of all people. But God is indeed waiting for you; he asks of you only the courage to go to him. . . .

“Let us find the courage to return to his house, to dwell in his loving wounds, allowing ourselves to be loved by him and to encounter his mercy in the sacraments. We will feel his wonderful tenderness, we will feel his embrace, and we too will become more capable of mercy, patience, forgiveness and love.”
