1/ The Polaron Cortina installation has been arranged with 6 x 5000 Amp rectifiers in series offering a fullycontrollable 30,000Amp x 36 Volt output.

The Polaron Cortina is a primary SCR, single copper wound transformer, DC power supply was originally employedfor a low voltage plating/brightening anodizing application.

The Polaron Cortina rectifiers SCR diodes are water cooled allowing it to be used in warmer climes compared to themore traditional UK air cooled units.

Input voltages ranging from 200V - 690VAC Three Phase.

Output Voltage Range: 0V - 40VDC per unit at 690V input,(415V input would give a maximum output of 25V) (arranging the sets in parallel would allow up to 240Volts output)

The Brush mains transformer is an oil immersed high voltage step down transformer with inbuilt thermal protection,converting mains voltages from 11,000 to 660 Volts.

The advantage of using the step down transformer directly on the system is the cost savings on the installation of theincoming cables and the current carrying capabilities they have.

Power Factor is a measure of how efficiently electrical power is consumed.

The ideal Power Factor is unity - or one. Anything less than one, (or 100% efficiency), means that extra power isrequired to achieve the actual task at hand.

This extra energy is known as Reactive Power, which unfortunately is necessary to provide a magnetising effectrequired by motors and other inductive loads to perform their desired functions.

However, Reactive Power can also be interpreted as watt-less, magnetising or wasted power and an extra burden onthe electricity supply.

Power Factor Correction is the term given to a technology that has been used since the turn of the 20th century torestore Power Factor to as close to unity as is economically possible.

This is achieved by the addition of capacitors to the electrical network, which compensate for the Reactive Powerdemand of the inductive load and thus reduce the burden on the supply.

How is Power Factor caused?

Most electrical equipment such as motors, compressors, welding sets and even switch start fluorescent lighting,create what is known as an inductive load on the supply.

An inductive load requires a magnetic field to operate, and in creating such a magnetic field causes the current to"lag" the voltage (that is, the current is not in phase with the voltage).

Power Factor Correction is the process of compensating for the "lagging" current by applying a "leading" current inthe form of capacitors.

This way Power Factor is adjusted closer to unity and energy waste is minimised.
