The 2000-2010 Decade: Peak and NadirPeak: the Congresses kept the association living on

Nadir:- Difficulties to organize the World Conference after 2008 - Difficulties to find a place in a world where more international conferences

were organized- Difficulties to staff the Executive Committee ‒ an increasing lack of

diversity and change- Difficulties to sustain the affiliation of member associations. Questions about the “Raison dʼêtre” of IFSAM have become a crucial issue since 2008 (what is IFSAM and what is the value added by membership at IFSAM?)


The 2000-2010 Decade: Peak and NadirMilestone: the biannual Congress

IFSAM Congress in Montreal in 2000 was probably the most attractive conference of IFSAM history because of a joint ASAC-IFSAM Congress which attracted a lot of submissions.

And because there was no competition with world-wide conferences.

The 2000-2010 Decade: Peak and Nadir2010 : Congress in Paris, which was originally scheduled to take place in 2012

Questions raised:

- 1. Congresses: difficulties to organize attractive conferences in a world where bigger ones where organized

- 2. Membership: some founding associations left

- 3. Raison dʼappartenance: again & again, beyond conferences, why belong to IFSAM ?


The 2000-2010 Decade: Peak and NadirIFSAM could not (and canʼt) avoid the discussion about:

- 1. What does « international » mean?

- 2. What is knowledge diffusion in a global context?

- 3. Which future do « national » associations have (IFSAM is then mostly a federation of national or regional associations)?

- 4. What is (scientific) research?

- 5. Discussion about relevance and impact began


The 2000-2010 Decade: Peak and Nadir

- A shift in focus from 2010 onwards:

- 1. Underscoring the importance of fostering multilateralism in the development of truly international scholarly activities in management research, pedagogy & practice

- 2. Sharpening the emphasis on evidence & insights from diverse cultures, traditions and settings which need to be combined and exchanged to broaden, deepen & enhance the body of knowledge

- 3. Positioning the Federation as a polycentric & culturally informedplatform for all that wish to affiliate & contribute

- 4. Rebuilding the capacity of the Federation to embody & present a diverse world view


The 2000-2010 Decade: Peak and Nadir- 5 central charges which needed a considered response from business &

management scholars in order to uphold legitimacy became the lynchpinof the 2012 Congress in Limerick:

- 1. Rigour-relevance debate

- 2. On-going ethnocentrism informing the body of knowledge

- 3. Dearth of contextualisation in research effort

- 4. Enduring academic-practice divide

- 5. Rising concern about the value systems underpinning business education
