HoistedHoistedOn a 30 foot poleI can sit above the cityAnd just like GodGo unnoticed

The occupants of the avenueCan hardly hold my interestSo I'll look inside myself for amusement

Closing my eyesI rifle through mental catalogsIn search of paintings by Francis Bacon

I find it hard to believeMargaret Thatcher found his images dreadful

I Love You Jane GoodallI Love You Jane GoodallI would pay to share your silenceWhile bugs would crawl on meSecretly hoping a chimp or two will surface

We would sit on beds of leavesOr maybe empty Scotch casesI'm told you are partial to Famous Grouse

If the jungle remained silentAnd we were left to our devicesMaybe that wouldn't be so bad

We could climb into your tree houseAnd you would make us Oolong teaWhile I tell you how beautiful you are

Yellow Ticket ParadeYellow Ticket ParadeAt the beginning of each weekPrecisely at 9:30Teacher planted her class in assigned seats

This is when the unclean spirit enteredThis is when she smiledIt was the moment that the parade would commence

Three separate childrenDescendants of povertyMarched single file with open hands

They were given yellow lunch ticketsStandard government issueUnlike normal kids whose tickets were blue

They weren't allowed to present their parentsThat might have explained their current dilemmaInstead they did their best to dodge the glares

From this moment onThey were on every 3rd grader's radar

13 Years Old13 Years OldTom Thumb closes at 11 pmAt 11:06 a Bonneville pulls upAnd two nuns pop out and bum rush the door

They are in need of cigarettesBut the cashier must be LutheranBecause she refused to answer the ladies prayer

So the brides of Christ are in a black moodAnd brush past me and a friendWho have spent most of July in this parking lot

"Excuse me sister" I called out"Would you like a Marlboro red?"I lit it for her as she pulled back her wimple

Exposing her hair and closing her eyesAnd when that smoke shot down the pipeThe Holy Spirit gives me reason to know

For the first time … I was absolved

South Dakota RanchSouth Dakota RanchThe day before my 18th birthdayAny boy would be lucky to be aloneAt the windbreak with a red headed girlOur camp perimeter was a series of moundsOr crushed and rusted beer cansThe byproduct of her parents marriageThe bats were just beginning to swoopAnd she stooped to make a fire beside meOnly half the buttons on her blouse were employedOh what I would have given to.....But I rode out of that world the next dayAnd today after 30 yearsI can't even remember her name

Hallways radiant with rosesServe you justice only portions of the timeThey won't compare in beautyThey cannot capture you

You upbraid me with your voiceyou hug me with your eyesYou are my holy tokenYou are my monkey paw

Liquor Store Parking LotLiquor Store Parking LotHula Girl - Hula GirlDance beneath the raindropsI'm pretty sure my windshield will keep you dry

Left/Right - Left/RightYour hips gyrate with fluidityAs if your balance was determined on a spring

Tick-Tock - Tick-TockThe clouds eclipse the moonBut it's still engaging when you dance in the neon

Hula Girl - Hula GirlI am fearful that our tryst must endMy girlfriend is headed towards the car, And she has some Tanqueray

Christmas in the Monkey HouseChristmas in the Monkey HouseMy wife and I came from broken homesSo the holidays were usually franticDashing from home, to frantic home, to home

My wife and daughter wouldn't give upThey painted bulls-eyes on their party dressesAnd set out to visit their extended families

But my son was 7 and still somewhat loyalHe would not abandon me though it meantThere would be no Christmas goose for us

We heated a pair of Super America chuck wagonsIn a gas station microwaveWe also got Fritos and Diet Mountain Dew

17

We decided to celebrate the Jesus birthdayIn a favorite place In a darkened tunnelOf the Como Zoo's Primate building

We sat alone, chewing and slurpingJust us, the apes and monkeysWho did not seem to notice us or care

But along came the building attendantWho pointed to the sign sayingNo food or drink in the primate house

"But this is our Christmas" I said to him"We got nowhere else to go"Scrooge turned his back to us, and was not seen again

AssisiAssisiSeveral hours before my family awokeI would hop into a scalding tubAnd read books in the bathMy favorite featured Saint Francis.

He liked animalsAnd he liked girlsWhen they drove him crazyHe jumped into the rose bushesNaked

When the book was down to 100 pagesI rationed themThree pages a day would buy me one more monthI didn't want to start a day without his presence

19

Page 20: 30 Foot Pole, by Danny Klecko

This was better than one long ecstatic soaking

On the last day – on the final pageFrancis was laid to restAnd a thousand birds from every foreign landdescended to pay their respectsI quickly locked the bathroom doorI didn’t want anyone to see me cry

Two months later – I had a shower installed

Feathers and ProphetsFeathers and ProphetsAngels were cast in a hierarchyIn which they value their identitiesEach legion wants to be better than the next

The Arch Angels are pledged to ChristHis resume is impressiveAnd he possesses a skill set that is east to covet

The Cherubs support the BaptizerHis diet is almost veganAnd you have to admit

the camel-hair coat is bad ass
