THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM, part 1

Baptism is the sacrament that gives our souls the new life of sanctifying grace by which we become Christians, children of God, and heirs of heaven. It is the very first sacrament that anyone is able to receive, and it opens up the faithful to receiving the other sacraments. It may only be received once because of what it is, and this is something that the Church takes very seriously. During Baptism, water is poured on the head of the one to be baptized, and at the same time the words that Jesus told us to say are said. Recall the Lord’s commission to his disciples in Matthew 28:19, “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” Baptism washes away original sin (which everyone who is human was born with – save the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. John the Baptist). This is the only sacrament which can remit original sin, but it doesn’t stop there, it cleanses us from all actual sin and remits all the punishments that would be due. Actual sin means sins that are committed by performing actions; this is different from original sin which is inherited and a sin by participation. This is why many put off baptism until they were on their death beds in the Middle Ages, but many were not lucky enough to make it. It was a legalistic interpretation of the sacrament, so instead of using it to begin a life lived in Christ, they were using it to try and get a speed pass into heaven. It was an enormous risk and so many died under unfortunate circumstances and were not able to receive Baptism. Even in this day and age with medical progress being what it is, anything can still happen, so get your children baptized as soon as you can.

Baptism also imprints an indelible mark or character on the soul – marking us as God’s own. Tied to this is the fact that Baptism opens wide the gates of heaven to you. Yes, it is possible for unbaptized persons to go to heaven, but it is so much more difficult for them to do so, especially because it is harder to live a life in cooperation with grace when they haven’t been given sanctifying grace to begin with. Another part of the rite includes Sponsors for those about to be baptized. The child can have one godparent if he is baptized and preferably the same sex of the child, at least 16 years old, has completed all three sacraments of initiation in the church, and is registered with whatever parish they belong to. Or if there are two, there needs

to be one of each sex, and one of them must meet the above requirements. Spiritual pro-tip: don’t make the political choice when choosing Sponsors (as in choosing people for alternative motives). Choose someone who is a good Catholic, whose faith you would like to see your child get, and who will be able to watch over your child’s spiritual growth. This is your child we are talking about – make sure he has been set up for success. And if you are a Sponsor already, make sure you are taking your sponsorship seriously and at least praying for your godchildren and doing your best to help them grow in their faith. The form of Baptism is the words Jesus gave us, and Our Lord made the form easy by giving us the exact words to use. So for a valid, sacramental, Christian baptism, you have to be baptized with these words: “N., I baptize you in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” You must say the Trinity’s proper names, so naming their functions just won’t do. The matter of this sacrament is water, which all of humanity acknowledges as having cleansing abilities. You can’t play semantic games to get around it. I won’t get much into the particulars of a thing’s essence with you, but an easy way of thinking about it is if you would normally call something by a name other than water, then it has stopped being water and so is not water. The usual ministers of this sacrament are the clergy: deacons, priests, and bishops. This is so we can keep track of who has received it and give the proper care to those who have. We keep track of this in the parish office with a sacramental record. Any additional sacraments of Initiation that change their state of life are also written in it.

(Continued next week.)
