TÜà WxÑtÜàÅxÇà Year 10 have completed their first unit of work for the year. Students were asked to explore issues that they considered significant. They investigated the works of other artists who respond to Social Issues through visual language. The students experimented with a variety of painting techniques and explored a range of possible compositions to best address their task. Their images reflect a diversity of interests with creative and innovative solutions to creating a painted response. Some of their artwork is presented below. Leonie McCulkin - Art Coordinator

_tÇzâtzx WxÑtÜàÅxÇà axãá German

Yesterday we farewelled the 21 German exchange students from our sister school, the Maria Ward Schule in Bad Homburg. During their short stay in Brisbane, the German girls have participated in a variety of classes which have been specially organised for them. They have also enjoyed a range of Australian experiences through visits to Stradbroke Island, Sea World and Australia Zoo. In addition, our German guests have been working with the German classes at Loreto which has proved to be an enriching cultural and linguistic experience for everyone involved. The German accompanying teachers, Herr Oliver Sieper and Frau Joelle Galikine said that the group has had a wonderful time at Loreto and are sorry to leave such a lovely school! Thank you to the Loreto families whose generosity in hosting our international guests made the exchange possible. I would like to sincerely thank the Loreto staff who organised activities and attended excursions with the German exchange group; Mrs Yuri Hada-Baxter, Ms Jess Badke, Mr Ben Langford, Mrs Marie Shaw, Mrs Helen Radvan, Mr Chris Jones, Ms Michelle Davidson and Mrs Deb Van den Brink. The exchange program would not have been possible without the help of Mrs Lesley Bongaarts, Mrs Alison McEneny, Mr Bill Bradic, Mr Mark Onions and Mr John Henderson whose assistance with excursions and the family get together was greatly appreciated. Above all, Mrs Peita Ward and Ms Amy Stewart are to be thanked and commended for their dedication and commitment in organising such a successful German exchange program. The visit of the German girls provided our students with wonderful opportunities to develop their language proficiency and broaden their cultural horizons. We know that the Loreto students who are travelling to Germany in November are already greatly looking forward to maintaining these life-long friendships on the other side of the world.

I would also like to thank Naa Sackey and the Multicultural Council for the wonderful welcome snacks that they provided for the German group upon their arrival at Loreto on Thursday 18 April. These girls continue to be fantastic ambassadors for Loreto College Coorparoo in extending warm hospitality to our international visitors. The Multicultural Council is also to be commended for the excellent way in which they organised celebrations for German Day last Wednesday. The pretzels and Gummi bears were very popular at morning tea as was the “Ginger Beer Drinking” competition at lunch time. Well done, girls – your hard work ensured that German Day was enjoyed by everyone!

Japanese

In March this year, Loreto hosted 12 girls from our sister school Kanagawa Gakuen in Yokohama, Japan. The exchange was a great success and now we have another group of girls from this school who will be visiting Loreto in late July. We are looking for sixteen Loreto families to host these students from Yokohama in Japan. Girls do not have to be studying Japanese to host these students. The students from

Yokohama are 15 year old girls who are very enthusiastic to improve their English. They will be in Brisbane from 23 July to 29 July. Please see the flyer in this newsletter for additional information. If you would like to host one of the Yokohama students, please return the slip to Mrs Hada-Baxter as soon as possible.

French

On Wednesday 8 May, the Year 12 French class will have a film afternoon at school to watch the award winning French film Welcome. The film describes the story of a Kurdish refugee and a French man who attempts to help this immigrant in his quest to be reunited with his girlfriend. Welcome provides an authentic extension to the topics of media, culture and immigration which form part of the Year 12 course and it is a film that is both critically acclaimed and highly recommended. The film afternoon will take place in room 402 from 3:30pm – 5:30pm and French style snacks will be provided. At the completion of the film, if you plan to meet your daughter, please could you collect her from the circular driveway. A letter will be sent home to parents later this week with more details. Louise Tilly - Languages Coordinator

`âá|v axãá Congratulations To all students who performed at the second Autumn Concert last Friday night – it was another excellent night! Spe-cial thanks go to all the Ensemble conductors for their hard work helping the students to prepare and then perform on the night; and also to our two comperes, Dr Paul Svoboda and Mt Pat Elsworthy, who gave up their time to help the concerts run smoothly.

Upcoming events Loreto College is well regarded in the local community for both the quality of its music ensembles and our students’ willingness to give generously of their time. In this light, four of our groups have upcoming performances at community events in the next few weeks. Firstly Flute Ensemble One will play at the “Cycles of Life” Forum featuring speakers such as columnist Kathleen Noonan (St James Church, Wed 1 May 7 pm to 9:30pm, arrive 6:30 pm and playing at approximately 8 pm). Then, this weekend, the Chorale is singing at a Heart Foundation Memorial and Thanksgiving Service (St Stephen’s Cathedral, Sun 5 May, 2 pm service). On Thursday 23 May, St Elizabeth’s at Tarragindi are holding an Under 8s celebration with the theme “Celebrating Community, Sharing Music, Movement and Culture, Think Locally”. We are hoping to send the Junior Choir and Clarinet Ensemble to perform at a 9:00 am opening assembly. We would transport students directly from and back to the school and they would miss Periods 1 and 2 of classes that day. If any parents have concerns about missed school work for their daughters and would like to withdraw them from this performance, please email the Music Department ([email protected]).

Trivia Night The Trivia Night, organised by the Music Support Group, is a fun evening for the whole family so organise a table of your friends and get your daughters to do the same! Bookings are open on www.trybooking.com/CSYK. Only $15 adults and $10 concession, licensed bar available and supper/tea/coffee provided. Don’t miss out for Saturday 18 May! See the flyer in this newsletter for more information.

Prize Donations The Music Support Group is looking for any parents who might be willing to donate an item (big or small) to be used as prizes for Trivia Night, raffles, concert Lucky Door etc. It could be a 2 for 1 voucher for your shop/restaurant, a bottle of wine, movie tickets etc. All donations help the Music Support Group to raise money that goes directly back to our students and ensembles through the Tuition Scholarships. If you are able to donate a prize for the Trivia Night we would be most grateful. Thank you. Music Support Group The next meeting of the Parents Music Support Group is Wednesday 8 May. New parents are always welcome. Meetings are held in the Gonzaga Barry Building, beginning at 7:30 pm and always finish by 8:30 pm.

Year 11 Retreat All Year 11 students who are travelling to Retreat this Thursday, whether Toowoomba or Brookfield, are still expected to attend morning music ensemble rehearsals before you depart and Friday afternoon after school rehearsals when you return. Please make sure you meet your commitments either side of the retreat days.

Loreto Music Festival Heats for the Festival will begin next week. A schedule for all heats was published on the Music Noticeboard last week. Students must take careful note of the following:

There are sometimes multiple heats for one section – all students should attend the first heat. If you are unavailable for any heat, you should contact the teacher adjudicating that section and organise with them which heat you are able to perform at.

If you decide you are not prepared enough to perform at your designated heat, you must contact the teacher adjudicating that section prior to the day of the heat. If you do this, then there will be no penalty. If you simply do not show up, 5 points will be deducted from your house tally!

It is compulsory for all students to bring a copy of their music to the heat to hand in to their adjudicator.

Don’t forget that you cannot perform a piece that you have learnt during rehearsals with your regular ensembles (eg Vocal quartet performing a Senior Choir piece learnt last year). Ben Langford - Director of Music

[xtÄà{ 9 jxÄÄ@Ux|Çz VÉâÇv|Ä RECIPE OF THE MONTH - By Hannah Reece

Snacking is a regular part of our daily eating habits. Snack foods, like other foods eaten during the day, should provide the body with a variety of nutrients to keep us healthy. Many people rely on packaged, processed snack foods between meals, as they are most convenient for school lunchboxes and travelling. However, these snacks can be high in fat, salt, sugar and artificial ingredients. This term the Health and Well-Being Council are aiming to promote healthier snacking by providing you with recipes for delicious and more nutritious snacks. Enjoy!

BERRY BLISS MUFFINS

Makes 9 medium sized muffins

Ingredients

1 large ripe banana 140g pureed apple 3 tablespoons low fat vanilla yogurt 2 tablespoons brown sugar 1 egg

1 cup wholemeal self-raising flour Berry Bliss Muffins by Hannah Reece (12)

½ teaspoon baking powder 1 tablespoon margarine (melted) 1 cup of fresh or frozen berries of your choice (blueberries, raspberries, tinned cherries)

Method

* Preheat the oven to 180°C and line a muffin tray with muffin papers. * Using a fork, mash the banana in a large bowl. * Whisk in the pureed apple, yogurt, brown sugar and egg. * Stir in the wholemeal self-raising flour and baking powder, followed by the melted margarine (the mixture will be thick). * Lightly fold in the berries. * Spoon mixture into muffin papers, filling them approximately 2/3 full. * Bake for 18-25 minutes or until golden brown and springy.

These muffins are much lower in fat and sugar than commercially prepared products. They are also a great source of fibre and contain half a serve of fruit! If you have any healthy recipes that you love and would like to share please email Hannah Reece at [email protected] .

HOST FAMILIES REQUIRED

July 23 – July 29 2013

This is a worthwhile opportunity

for your family to learn about

Japanese culture, while sharing

with your Japanese student the

lifestyle of an Australian family.

Families are asked to provide all meals and a friendly home for

their student

They will travel to and from school each day the same way as

arranged for your own children

The Japanese exchange students are 15 year old girls who are

very enthusiastic to come to Australia and improve their English

Will the student speak any English? Yes. However, as their English skills may be limited, we would ask that you speak clearly and slowly (but not in a patronising way) when communicating with them.

Will I have to cook Japanese food for the student? No. Your Japanese student is here to experience an Australian lifestyle. This includes spending mealtimes with your family, and eating what you and your family normally eat.

Is it OK if the parent/s work fulltime? Yes. During these times (e.g. after school), your Japanese student can spend time with your own children. Families who live near each other are encouraged to share transport, or other activities outside of school.

Do we need Blue Cards? No. Blue Cards are only necessary if you are a hosting a student for more than 10 days.
