Trust launches ‘Improving the Patient Client Experience Standards’

The Southern Trust recently launched ‘Improving the Patient Client Experience Standards’ at events in Dungannon, Craigavon and Newry. This launch is part of a wider Northern Ireland initiative from the Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety to make sure that proper systems are put in place to help achieve these standards.

The Department has identifi ed fi ve standards relating to respect, attitude, behaviour, communication, privacy and dignity which can improve people’s experiences of using healthcare services.

All of us, whether as patients or as staff want to be treated courteously, with dignity, respect and sensitivity and all those involved in providing care are responsible for creating a friendly environment and a service, which the public can be satisfi ed with.

The Southern Trust has set up a Patient Client Experience Working Group and it has plans to ‘pilot’ a patient satisfaction survey beginning in October in Craigavon Area Hospital to get feedback from patients and clients on their experiences. This pilot will then roll out across all teams, facilities and services. This will happen gradually over a period of time as tools for measurement need to be developed for specifi c services or settings. This pilot is being adopted by all Health and Social Care Trusts in Northern Ireland.

International award for the Bluestone UnitThe design team involved in the development of the Bluestone Unit - the purpose-built mental health facility which opened in May 2008 - has been congratulated by the Health Minister following their success at the Design and Health International Academy Awards in Singapore. The Unit was awarded in the Mental Health project category.

Minister Michael McGimpsey said, “The Design & Health International Academy Awards recognise professional excellence in the research and practice of designing healthy built environments and have a signifi cant infl uence on the global design and development of humanistic environments that support health, wellbeing and quality of life. These awards demonstrate how my Department, the Trust and their design teams have worked effectively together on health and social care planning and design.”

The Trust’s Acting Chief Executive Mairead McAlinden adds, “”The Bluestone Unit provides leading edge mental health services and ensures best practice in terms of quality of care, patient safety and staff welfare. We believe that the facility will be a fl agship model for mental health service provision in Northern Ireland and provides Mental Health Practitioners with a range of options to respond appropriately to the mental health needs of the local community. The adjacent Resource Centre, which opened on 12 October, means that people can receive treatment in settings which are most conducive to their treatment and recovery.”

Stephen Douglas, Director of Hall Black Douglas Architects, said, “We are delighted that the innovative design adopted by the Trust in the Bluestone Unit is receiving national and international recognition. The integration of internal and external space gives a secure yet homely feel to the unit. The landscaping and connection with the natural surroundings work together with the relaxed informal layout to aid the path to good mental health.”

The Unit won the award for Best Design for a Mental Health Building at the prestigious Building Better Healthcare Awards held in November 2008.

Cancer Peer ReviewThe Southern Trust’s cancer services will be part of a major peer review project over the next few months.

All fi ve Trusts are taking part in this service improvement process, which is looking at quality of cancer services and benchmarking against best practice across the UK.

The review team in the Southern Trust are from cancer centres in London and will focus on four key topics - breast, colo-rectal, lung and gynae.

The review team will look at the patient experience and share examples of good practice here in the Southern Trust, as well as making recommendations on areas of development for our cancer teams.

The fi nal report will be published on the website www.cquins.nhs.uk when the review process is complete in summer of next year.

For further information on the review, please contact Head of Cancer Services, Alison Porter on ext. 2191
