    Non-Verbal Communication

The aim of being able to communicate

effectively with your body, is to establish a

strong presence which demands attention and

    conveys authority. This:

    • Makes people want to listen to you.

    • Reduces the propensity for disturbances and distractions.

    • Elevates your confidence by giving you a sense of control.

    Non-Verbal Communication

    • Posture: Your posture is an important part of any presentation. Itcommunicates whether you’re confident or nervous to the audience andhelps them decide whether they should respect your speech or not. Standwith your feet shoulder length apart, chest slightly raised and chin parallelto the ground.

    • Gestures: The use of gestures is a vital tool in the communicationprocess. It not only helps emphasize particular points in your speech, butalso injects energy into it. For fairly inexperienced and nervous speakers, ithelps divert attention away from your face, thus creating comfort.

    • Eye Contact: whether you’re speaking to one person or to fivehundred, maintaining eye contact is very important. It makes youraudience feel engaged and in turn compels them to pay you moreattention.

    Overcoming Self-Doubt

In order to overcome doubt, you need to firstunderstand how it operates and where it getsits strength. Doubt has the following

    characteristics:

    1. Doubts appear helpful

    2. Doubts find their power in your mind

    3. Doubts have an element of truth in them

    4. Doubts appear more authentic than they really are

    Overcoming Self-Doubt

Get an outside perspective:We often judge ourselves a little too harshly. Getting the opinion of someone who knows you and your

capabilities will show you a new perspective of yourself that you can evaluate against your ownperspective.

Create a bigger WHY:Most times, doubts exist because our fear of failure overshadows our desire to succeed. Creating a

water-tight reason for doing something often helps offset that fear.

Use doubt as a tool for change:Because doubts have some truth in them, recognising those truths is a great way to help you actively

    work to overcome them.

    Review your successes:

A great way to help yourself regain confidence in your abilities is be recalling challenges that you havepreviously overcome.

Surround yourself with positivity:What our colleagues, friends and families think about us and our goals gradually becomes what we

think of ourselves and our goals. Surround yourself with people who will help you see yourself ina positive light.

    Comfort Through Practice

Human beings are designed to adapt to difficult

circumstances. The more you do something,

the better you get at doing that thing over

time, this is true for public speaking as well.

    • Practice giving speeches in front of the mirror

    • Practice giving speeches in front of family or friends andhave them give you feedback.

    • Record yourself on your phone and give yourself feedback.

    Projection:1. Relax

Before you speak, take a few moments for some relaxation exercises. Take some deep breaths. Warm up

your neck and shoulders by doing some head and shoulder rolls. Clench your hands and feet and release --

do this a couple of times. Raise your arms over your head and take a big stretch. Open your mouth wide

and warm up your face and jaw muscles. Bend at the waist and let your head and arms hang down to the

    floor.

    2. Open your mouth

Sometimes the only problem is that you just aren't opening your mouth enough. If you don't open your

mouth, your voice is not going to go anywhere; on top of that, you are probably not enunciating, making

your speech even harder to understand.

    3. Improve your posture

Make sure your body and head are facing the audience, with your chest and shoulders open, not slouched

or hunched. Hold your head high and, when reading from your notes, do not speak at the same time, butwait until you are looking up at your audience again. When you're standing tall with good posture, you are

also able to breathe more effectively, not only pulling in enough air, but expelling it better as well, which

pushes your voice out into the world.

    4. Focus your voice

Vocal projection is not so much about being louder as it is about placement. When you are not projecting

your voice, it's because you are speaking to a space right in front of your face. Projection just means that,

instead of focusing at a point right in front of you, you focus on a point farther away.

    Fluency:

    • Fluency is the quality of speaking so that words and

thoughts flow from your mouth in a gentle stream.

The cause of a lack of flow can be divided into threeareas; mental preparation, speech preparation, and

delivery. Force yourself to identify with only 3-5

words what you want to say. Simplify what it is you

want to express into its basic elements. It is thesimplification process that will help you move to

    becoming a more fluent speaker.

    Filler Words:Pause Before You Speak

    • If you're having a conversation or debate with someone and you jump in as soonas possible, you're probably going to use more filler words. Instead, pause to thinkout your next statement before you speak. You may need to become a bit more

comfortable with silence, but it can help reduce those filler words.Slow Down

    • This goes along with the last tip, but it bears mention: don't be afraid to slowdown a bit. If you talk too fast, you're likely to get a little tongue-tied, especially ifyou haven't quite figured out what you're going to say next. If your mouth movesfaster than your brain, you're going to use a lot more filler words.

Listen to Yourself  • Next, set aside some time to listen to yourself talk and try to figure out where your

filler words are most common. Some people recommend recording yourself, butit's hard to get an accurate view of your speech in such a controlled situation. Still,it may work for you.
