    Obsidian Obsidian

    Rough, light grey,and full of holes. Anigneous rock that isvery light because it

    is full of gas bubbles.

    A rock that can floaton water!

    Rough, blue-grey, with amixture of small and

    larger crystals. Anigneous rock formed fromcooled lava. Also known

    as Bluestone, it is avery useful building

    material.

    Basalt Basalt

    Very obvious white,black and pink crystals.An igneous rock formed

    from cooled magma.Beautiful when

    polished, it is used formemorials likegravestones.

    Brown and lookingvery smelly. Formedwhen lava has been

    extruded throughnarrow openings. It

    doesnt matter if youstep in this igneousdoggy-do, because

    its rock hard!

    Ropy LavaRopy Lava

    A mixture of sand andpebbles cemented

    together. Thissedimentary rock wasformed when a strong

    flood washed out allsizes of material .

    Conglomerate Conglomerate

    .Dark grey with veryfine crystals. This

    metamorphic rock hasformed from siltstone

    that was originallyblack oozy mud found

    in swamps.

    Shale Shale

    Light coloured and verycrumbly. This

    sedimentary rock isquite young and has not

    had time to cementtogether properly, so itis too soft and weak to

    be of any use to us.

    Yellow, with obvioussand-sized crystals

    cemented together. The

    most commonsedimentary rock, it isstill being formed today

    wherever a river is spillingsilty water into the sea.

    Sandstone Sandstone

    Mud-coloured withobvious layers. This

    sedimentary rock showshow floods have

    washed through avariety of landscapes,

    depositing slightlydifferent sands each

    time.

    Creamy coloured andoften full of fossil

    shells. Thissedimentary rock

    formed from layers ofcalcareous materialfloating down fromdead, shelled seacreatures above.

    Limestone Limestone

    Pure white and verysoft. When layers oftiny shells rain downonto the sea bed in

    clean water, thissedimentary rock

    results. A teachersbest friend before

    whiteboards!

    . Light coloured and withan obvious cell structure.This sedimentary rock is

    the fossilised remains ofcalcium carbonate that

    has been organised by acolony of sea creatures

    called polyps.

    CoralCoral

    Pink and crystalline.This sedimentary rock

    formed when an ancientsea full of red algaeevaporated. Crushed

    up, it will end up fromdining room tables toaluminium smelters!

    Bluish and crystalline, withdelicate lines and patterns.

    This rock has

    metamorphosed fromlimestone under great

    pressure and heat. Highlyvalued for decorating

    buildings and bathrooms

    MarbleMarble

    White and crystalline. Thisrock has metamorphosed

    from sandstone.Extremely hard, and when

    the pressure has been

    high enough, it can be aclear crystal.
